Thoughts recur to us, although some are recalled much easier than others. A place, a room, a hall, a desk, a window, a door, a parking place mean something to us. The occasion, the incident, the teacher, the joke, the story, made us what we have become: the class of ' 73. We feel warmth toward those who have become a part of our lives. We believe in, cherish, and yes, even deserve the friendships that enriched our lives for those four years. Emerging from this brief sojourn, we will begin to live and work what we sensed Jesuit had given us. Jesuit seemed to have all the ingredi¬ ents for the same type of club that terrorized the state in ’67: size, speed, experience, youth and a blooded coaching staff. However, the 1972 Flyer football edition had its ups and downs this season, which was evident by its disappointing 5-5 record. With great expectations and excellent material, the Jordan Street Boys seemed assured of once again attaining the district crown, which they had so dominated in the past. However, ill fortune struck the Flyers in such areas as bad breaks and untimely miscues. Not one opponent in District 1-AAA had a more solid, balanced club than did Jesuit, but amidst all the hurrahs, some mysterious elements crept in and internally demolished the Flyers dreams of a state championship. After the conclusion of the season the Flyers were honored by displaying the best overall defense in their respective district. Post season honors went to Steve Britner, who was named Outstanding Lineman of the Week, All-District and All-City and to Mike Erwin, who achieved the Tripple Crown by being selected on All- District, All-City, and All-State teams. 88 After the disastrous North Caddo loss, the Jesuits did manage to eke out wins over Minden and Northwood, after clobbering Green Oaks 35-7 in the thick of the district fight. The hard fought victory over Minden featured the staunch Flyer defense and a ground game tailormade for the muddy track; final score: Jesuit 14, Minden 6. Next was archrival Northwood, which gave the Flyers tough struggle, but spearheaded by a spectacular 55 yard scoring catch by Royce Adams, Jesuit rolled to victory. The proud defense had its first shut¬ out and the Flyers finally looked like a team. The mysterious element crept in the following week, though in a 17-7 loss to Bossier. Two costly turnovers in the second half did the Blue in, providing the Bearkats with the winning margin. Although it took the offense a half to uncoil against Bethune, they sprung a devastating attack in the second half, highlighted by scores from Carper, Adams, and Hermes. After the 20-0 Blitz of Bethune, things didn ' t go as well the next week in a 28-7 loss to runner-up Haughton. The epitome of frustra¬ tion arrived on homecoming night versus Springhill, when two last minute drives failed to overcome a 13-6 Lumberjack lead; Springhill 13, Jesuit 12. The season ' s finale brought the Flyers their best game of the season, a 32-0 smashing of Parkway. The staunch Flyer defense, bidding to become the district’s best, ended a disappointing season with an explosive win. The rea¬ sons for this year ' s success centered mainly around a strong defense, excellent coaching, and five unselfish players who worked together as a single unit. The Flyers opened the season in fine style by winning their first five non-district contests. Never before had any Jesuit club compiled such an impressive record in the early going. With such state powerhouses as Haughton, Springhill, and Parkway in the same district, the Flyers’ chances seemed bleak. Jesuit not only survived, but regis¬ tered two impressive victories over runner-up Parkway, in which Robbie Gosslee hit for over 30 points. In the early stages of the season Coach Holladay, who is in his fourth year as head mentor, expressed his feel¬ ings of the upcoming season with cautious” optimism. He believed in most cases that the game was determined by a few breaks and the team with the upperhand that particular night usually wins. This year’s team consisted of three seniors, three jun¬ iors, and two sophomores. However, both the first and second-year players saw plenty of action as Boose, Calen¬ dar, and Wright played regularly throughout the year. The two sophomore sensations, scrappy Leslie Jones and John (Jo-Jo) Brown broke into the lineup and helper! rejuvenate the team during a mid-season slump. Finally, there are the trio of seniors, consisting of two-year start¬ ers, Robbie Gosslee and Arthur Bright, along with super sub Chris Waterman. At guard. Bright displayed his ball wizardry in fine fashion and together with his leadership ability proved to be the floor leader. As Coach Holladay put it, Rob Gosslee, for his size is one of the best,” and was he ever. Not only did he shoot for the second best average in the district, but at 6 ' 2 , he rebounded with opposing players with great height advantages. The team’s success cannot be credited to any one par¬ ticular player, but to the whole team as a single unit, and with the majority of the squad returning next year, con¬ tinued success seems to be in the making. 103 SOCCER Upper left: George Wray tangles with opponent. John Keats 113 ♦Sherr Thurmon ♦Sharon Stein man Rob Goss lee proved to be one of the best in 1-AAA this year in many respects. Maintaining a scoring average of twenty points throughout the season he ranked number two in district in that category. Gosslee s most outstanding achievement, however, was caching the glamorous 1.000 point club for his career. Along with these achievements, the 6-2 center proved to be an inspiring floor leader as he and his teammates helped make a most successful year for the Flyers. Various post season honors went this year to two linemen: Mike Erwin (left) and Steve Britner (right). Defen¬ sive tackle Britner was chosen Outstanding Lineman of the Week,” All-District, and All- City.
