And the few who do read it have probably finished paging through the book a couple of times now and are bored with itg so having nothing else to do, they turn back to the first page and read the introduction. Since you are already bored with the content of the book an introduction now is a little superfluous. Here is my suggestion: put the book down for a few hoursg then come back to it and start refreshed. PART II You have just opened the 1967 Flight. It's not an easy book to look at if you want anything from it. It concerns three hundred and twenty boys and their victories and defeatsg their contributions and rewards. THE FLIGHT Nineteen hundred and sixty-seven Jesuit High School Shreveport, Louisiana Carl Liberto ...... .. . Editor Germain Cassiere ........ Cover derign Francis X. Pistorius, SJ. . . Adviror They worked hard living the months between March 1966 and February 1967 and this staff could find no easy way to present their works. So here's your job. It's not easy. You should look at this book as an outsider, a reader of fiction. This is the way to start. Then as you look at each picture start to feel the individual, become the in- dividual. As you look at the football player in the picture under the heading Jesuit second in State, try to feel the pride and frustration of being second place while you try not to feel second best. Look at the debater, Feel his heart beat: his hands grab his quotes as he gets up to speak. Enough prompting. Turn the page and begin your laborsg afterwards you should be exhausted from your work. 5 'Y iq w -p W E s i 3 2 'Jfm:N',i:f:!..w Q5-,f zfW5ff3gQji1JM?Mf A ' Contents Shtdenf Life ..... Seniors ............ O INDIVIDUALS . . . There is no hope for humanity, only for individuals. QA1bert Camusj INDIVIDUALS . . . There are three hundred and twenty one individual students at Jesuit. Th ey can be classified, grouped, tested, ranked, and given numbersg but they will always re- main individuals. But three hundred and twenty one individuals alone do not make a high school. They lack something. There is an aimless void. The thing which fills this void is guidance. But what kind of guid- ance? And where does the guidance point? INDIVIDUALS PLUS FACULTY INDIVIDUALS PLUS FACULTY The faculty provides the guid- ance. But the faculty is composed of individuals also. So guidance comes from individuals of the fac- ulty. What is achieved by this face- to-face confrontation of student- individual with faculty-individual? JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL? ,,.Y..Y. -.,W---3-.. r. ..,- Y , v HH ' H ' ir 521 'Z wifi, If JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL? W Through all the confrontations, through all the time, work, guts, sweat, wins, losses, ability, merit, and pride something emerges. What? We don't know what, but we have a name for it, Jesuit High School. After we leave this location in time and space that comprise our years at Jesuit, we will find we never leave the confrontations with in- dividuals. We still won't know what is to be gained or the reasons why, but we will have a name for it. The con- frontation will be no longer between three hundred and twenty-one individ- uals and a faculty. It will no longer be called Jesuit High School. The confron- tation will be with three billion indi- viduals and we will call it life on earth. And as awesome as this situation seems, we have the feeling that something transcends it. fi? STUDENT LIFE i' if 'ff Track 66: The firsf fruly hopeful season. That one was Central who out-scored the Flyers 7-O. The bottom picture shows both line and backfield action in that game. Rinaudo runs away from Eunice in play-offs. Abozza' Fr. Weber, president of Jesuit High School, with past presidents and friends of the school concelebrates the Mass. Al fighf: Among the well-wishers was Bishop Charles P. Greco of Alexandria. The year 1967 has been a sobering year, for we have witnessed with sorrow the death of a former teacher and the death of a fellow student. To many of us Mr. Salvail was only the father of a classmate. But to the long line of graduates of Jesuit High between the years 1949 and 1961 he was a dedicated teacher and a source of inspiration. Charles Barbour was only 14 when he died. For many in the school this was their first experience with death, and they were saddened by the loss of a fellow student. But to the members of 1C and Charlie's many friends it was moreg it was a personal loss of a classmate and a close friend. Of course, books were read, people discussed and argued, wage owners worked, housewives got chapped hands and looked out of kitchen win- dows, and just about all of us went to church. But thinking really wasn't our own: everybody thought, but not their own thoughts. Thoughts were like flowers painted on a wall: they didn't grow and they didn't die. They were just there. And I sup- pose life was simple though rather dull, at least in comparison to what living is today. You have a chance to belong to the think generation. But you'll have to choose for it. To be part of it, you'll have to know something about it. First of all you'll have to be as honest as a child's tongue, yes, you'll have to tell the truth and not just let things act on you. You'll have to discover the greatest of all created truths-the People of God. And lastly you'll have to know and forward the thrust of the People of God, and that thrust is an ever greater convergence towards unity and love. You'll have to care for every human: the war in Vietnam will be yours whether you get there or not, the poor will be your brothers as never before, the hungry will be at your table, somehow, and you will look at the Negro and see a brother. Yours will be to vote the truth, to talk the truth, to love the truth, to be the truth. The alter- native is to become the only thing that will not survive-the hermit who gets sick, not knowing why, on the diet of his own narrow self. Search for the truth, and, if you look hard enough, in its wake will follow some good, some love, happiness with some suffering, and the Christ, who calmly awaits at the center and draws you. jacques L.
