These remarkable JesuiTs are The Rev. Kevin A. Nowlan, S.J., and The Rev. Samuel Hill Ray, S.J., who This year celebraTed Their sevenTieTh and TiTTieTh anni- versaries, respecTively, in The SocieTy oT Jesus. TogeTher They represenT one hundred and TwenTy years oT cheerTul, unTiring devoTion To The duTies OT The way OT liTe To which They were called. FaTher Nowlan was born in Dublin, Ireland, AugusT I4, l873, and There enTered The JesuiT Order in l89O. ln I89l he came To The UniTed STaTes, and since Then has been associaTed wiTh The JesuiT sysTem oT educaTion in every one oT iTs schools in The SouTh. ATTer his ordinaTion To The priesThood on July 29, l904, he Took up duTies as a Teacher and preTecT oT discipline aT Spring Hill College. ExcepT Tor sTinTs as a miliTary chaplain in Tampa, Florida, in l9l8-l9I9, and aT Barlcsdale Air Force Base, Bossier CiTy, he has devoTed mosT oT his priesTly life To Teaching Greelq, LaTin, French, lvlaThemaTics, or Science aT Spring Hill College, lvlobile, Alabama: ST. PeTer ThaT I was an English subiecT? I'd never geT in! FaTher Ray was born in TiTusviIIe, Florida, on January I I, IB94. He enTerecI The JesuiT order in I9IO and received his BA. and IvI.A. degrees Trom Gonzaga UniversiTy in Spokane, WashingTon. He made his Theological sTudies aT The ImmacuIaTe ConcepTion College, IvIonTreaI, Canada, where he was ordained To The priesThood in I925. During his years as a JesuiT, FaTher Ray has served as dean oT TacuITies aT ST. Charles College, Grand CoTeau, Louisiana: reTreaT masTer aT Grand CoTeauq dean oT men, sTudenT counsellor, and head oT The deparTmenT oT Theology aT Loyola UniversiTy, New Orleans, Louisiana: pasTor oT ST. Ann's CaThoIic Church, WesT Palm Beach, Florida: and professor oT religion and English aT JesuiT High School, ShreveporT, Louisiana. In I943 he began a Tour oT duTy wiTh The UniTed STaTes Navy as a chaplain wiTh The rank oT lieuTenanT. He was discharged in I946 wiTh The rank of lieuTenanT commander, and he is now a commander in The Naval Reserve. He is also a member oT numerous veTerans' organizaTions, on boTh a local and naTional level. Impressive as iT is, This is only a parT of FaTher Ray's accompIishmenTs. He is widely known and regarded Tor his work wiTh youTh, boTh in clerical and non-church acTiviTies such as The Boy ScouTs. In his relenTless work in The inTeresT oT youTh, he was The Tounder and direcTor oT Our Lady oT The Oaks ReTreaT House in Grand CoTeau, Louisiana. His ready smile, his endless supply oT inTeresTing anecdoTes, and his TaTherIy concern Tor The progress of The sTudenTs have endeared him To The boys aT JesuiT High. They know him noT only as an exceIIenT Teacher, buT as a Triend.
