Season Summary Under the fine coaching of Mr. Lonnie Richards, the Jones Varsity Basketball Team ended the 1968 season with an impressive 24-8 record. Playing with five returning lettermen, the team scored victories over rivals Austin, Bellaire, Westbury, and Sterling. Although the Falcons did not gain any post-season playoff games, there were several memorable moments throughout the season. Playing in three tournaments, jones scored commanding victories over Gulf Coast teams to win the Beaumont and Stephen F. Austin Tournaments. In two season starts against Bellaire, Jones split with the Cardinals. In the first game, the Falcon Five toppled Bellaire 55-50, but later in the season, jones fell in overtime play. Tom Pate, George Holland, Eddie Big E Alix, Ty Pate, Whit Hagerman, Mark Wright, and Gilbert Garza led jones at one point in the season to a state ranking. Next year, the basketball team will be directed by a new coach, Mr. Tommy Tyson. A very successful coach who has led junior high teams to several city championships, Coach Tyson hopes to uphold Jones' winning tradition.
