Sands then tried to sweep right end on a keeper for the two-point conversion, but de- fensive tackle Harlan Lane, a 165-pound dynamo, b r o k e through to halt him at the one. ,Lee. like the proverbial roll- Tomlin went across on a 10- yard advance at right tackle as he bounced off five Falcon defenders. . Wolfinger added the extra point and Lee led, 14-6. Jones could conceivably have tied the game and still lost at this point. Lee led int penetrations, 3-1, and the Fal- cons needed a miracle. That gave the Falcons a chance, as it was their third penetration, and it proved that miracles can happen. Still they needed to tie the game before penetrations and to winvthe city title. A check with the official statisticians showed that Jones owned a comfortable lead in first downs, and, with the penetra- tions even, first downs would determine the champion in case of a tie. Gavrel tempted fate when he tried to hit Bailey for the vital two pointer, but .fate was smiling on the Falcons, and Bailey was open in the end zone. He caught it and Jones
