Then Scruggs pounded through a narrow opening at right tackle and scored from the three. Jones now trailed, 7-6. Sands then tried to sweep right end on a keeper for the two-point conversion, but de- fensive tackle Harlan Lane, a 165-pound dynamo, b r o k e through to halt him at the one. ,Lee. like the proverbial roll- Tomlin went across on a 10- yard advance at right tackle as he bounced off five Falcon defenders. . Wolfinger added the extra point and Lee led, 14-6. Jones could conceivably have tied the game and still lost at this point. Lee led int penetrations, 3-1, and the Fal- cons needed a miracle. Jones took the kickoff and drove rapidly to the Lee eight- yard line before the drive was lu, ,1 1 v w with only 2:04 remaining. All Lee needed to do was hold the ball for three downs and punt and the game was over. However, Tomlin fum- bled on the second play and tackle Bill Atessls recovered for Jones at the Lee four. That gave the Falcons a chance, as it was their third penetration, and it proved that miracles can happen. Still they needed to tie the game before penetrations and to winvthe city title. A check with the official statisticians showed that Jones owned a comfortable lead in first downs, and, with the penetra- tions even, first downs would determine the champion in case of a tie. Gavrel tempted fate when he tried to hit Bailey for the vital two pointer, but .fate was smiling on the Falcons, and Bailey was open in the end zone. He caught it and Jones
