38 - Sports Falcons, 7-O 111 Znd Round District play started on january 2, 1979 for the Falcons. Traveling to Humble, the Falcons were fired-up and eager to show off what they had been practicing for all year. At the end of the first quarter the Fal- cons were behind by one point. Henry Kellum helped the Falcons to take the lead in the second quarter pumping in 3 field goals and 2 free throws. The Falcons remained ahead the rest of the game to capture a win 48-36. The next game, against Klein, the Fal- cons won 52-40. Henry Kellum was high scorer with a total of 23 points. The Falcons, then played the spring Lions who trailed the Falcons by only a few points at the end of the first half. In the last half, the Falcons remained on top and won their third district game. Standing 3-0 in district play the Falcons were hot and everyone knew it. The fans crowded Bobcat gym on january 12, 1979 to watch the Falcons take on the Cy-Fair Bobcats. After a long, hard game the Bob- cats came out on top with a score, 42-39. Douglas Whitaker was high scorer for the Falcons, totaling 12 points. Losing by only 3 points, to a team that went to state the year before, was a sign for the Falcons not to lose hope and to keep their spirits up. The next game was a breeze for the Fal- cons taking a win from Cypress Creek, 52- 47. The Conroe Tigers gave the Falcons more of a challenge. At the end of the first half the Falcons were ahead 22-19. The end of the 3rd quarter left the Falcons behind 24-26. The Falcons lost to the Tigers by a final score of41-42. In the last game of the round, the Fal- cons overcame McCollough for a win 38- 33. Starting the second round of district play, the Falcons knew that they must play well and become victorious in order to win district. The Falcons achieved this, winning 6 straight games, defeating Hum- ble 56-41, Klein 62-60, and Spring 60-46. The Cy-Fair game ended in a controversy. With jersey Village leading, 29-28 the final buzzer sounded, with a foul called against j.V.

While the jersey Village fans feel- ing unsure andthe Cy-Fair fans feel- ing they still may have a chance, the coaches and referees were in conver- sation about the foul that was called. The Falcons, who committed only 3 team fouls in the 4th quarter, were still allowed 2 more fouls before being penalized. Thus, the contro- versy was over and l.V. won 28-28. The Falcons kept going, beating Cypress Creek, 26-24 and Conroe, in a very well played game, 47-43. Although the Falcons came out first in the second round of district play, to earn the title of District Champs, the Falcons must beat the first round champs, Conroe. The dis- trict play-off game was held on Feb- ruary 16, 1979 in the Sam Houston State Coliseum, in Huntsville, Texas. The Falcons couldn't get things together and were behind the whole game. Although the Falcons never lost hope, they were defeated 38-45, but remained Co-District Champs. a.j Rick Morgan by Kenny Terry clj Doug Whitaker d Q Kevin McCarthy 140 - Sp rf
