Varsity Basketball Bounces on The lump ball--was tipped as the 1977-78 Girls' Varsity Basketball season began. In the district opener against Klein the Falcons were tripped 52-50. The next two games against Spring and Conroe the Falcons lowered their dis- trict record O-3. The following week the Falcons carrie back to pound Bryan 50-16. The winning ways looked good as lVlcCullough and Jersey Vil- lage fought to deadlock with the clock reading OQOO time remaining. The Falcons were not to be denied as the battle went into overtime. The Fal- cons won 50-48. The district season record looked disap- pointing at 3-9 but 5 of the 9 losses were as close as ten points, The offense was led by Julie Gleason, Hazel Floberson, Pam Floberson, Janice Raney, and Tamma Boze. The defense consisted of Sandra Warmke, Virginia Hargrave, Jeannell Smith, and Susan Gast. Julie Gleason, averag- ing lO points a game led the Falcons in that department. Sandra Warmke, iunior, was honored by being chosen for the First Team All-District. Placed on the second team All-District Julie Gleason and Jeannell Smith, Seniors, were chosen on offense, Freshmen and iunior varsity girls' bas- ketball teams play full court while varsity was still playing half court. lt looks as in the future varsity basketball will all be playing full court. Coach Spillar said, A full court game would be to girls' var- sity basketball advantage. It splits responsibilities and other players arent depend- enton only one or two girls. Even though this season didn't show many wins, the effort and team spirit was there. As the last seconds ticked away on the clock the basketball season was final- ized. 8 Sports sf - Back row: Jeannell Smith, Tamma Boze, Cindy Kidd, Wanda Roberson, Sandra Warmke, Juli: Gleason, Front row: Linda House, Pam Floberson, Janice Flaney, Virginia Hargrave, Haze Floberson, Susan Gast, Pat Spillar. ,Q
