The Gold Dusters play a very important part in rising the student body's spirit at football games, basketball games, and pep-rallies. Even early Thursday morning before the sun can rise, Gold Dusters could be found wandering through the dark, weiry hallways, decorat- ing their football players lockers. ln the midst of the season, they competed in the Gulf Coast Drill Team competition held at Channelview High School. The girls brought home a first division rating on a gun dance routine to the song Bonanza, and two second divisions rating on a jazz dance routine to the music of temptation and a high kick to Bugsy Mal- one, composed by Mrs. Blessing. They also traveled to Kilgore College to attend the Tops in Twirling and Drill Team Camp, in June. Bringing back the Most Improved Drill Team Award, along with the coveted Spirit pom poms. While there they also enter Stunt Night with their rendition of Alvin and the Chip- munks Down on the Farm. Individual awards were given to the girls who were outstanding in certain dances. Meg Griffith won the Military Award to Wil- liam Tell. This was the most unusual dance the Gold Dusters had ever performed because each girl did a slow Chinese split on the field. The routine is a new aspect in the Gold Dusters performances. Shelly Culver won the chair award which is another unique dance that the Gold Dusters learned at camp. Captain Annette Hajdik acquired the most outstanding jazz performer in this year's iazz routine. But the favorite dance of the Gold Dusters was the gun dance to the song Bonanza, The outstanding dancer in this rou- tine was Colonel Audrey Arechiga.
