The Grange and Black has dedicated itself to pre- serving this way of life. J Within these pages . . . In Appreciation. ....... . Administration and Faculty Classes ................ Activities .... . Sports ..... . Seniors .... . In Appreciation Mrs. Ruth Weiler Mrs. Weiler has ended her term of dedicated service to our school after thirty years. As well as being a teacher of home economics, she was one of the first in the state to introduce a family life course into the high school curriculum. For several years she took her place as adviser of the freshman class and served many terms with the local Future Homemakers of America chapter, accompanying participants on their annual trip to the state conference. After graduating from Montgomery High School with honors, Mrs. Weiler attended The Pennsylvania State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She began her teaching career at Philipsburg and served that school district for five years. In the past Mrs. Weiler has conducted sewing and Red Cross nutrition classes for adults. She enjoys reading, sewing, and traveling, but she says her greatest satisfaction comes when she sees her former students become well adjusted members of society. We were indeed fortunate to have had this accom- plished teacher on the staff at Jersey Shore and join with the faculty in wishing her a most rewarding retirement. wfMf 95,6449 Mr. Francis O. McCanna Supervising Principal As our chief administrative officer, Mr. McCanna did a commendable job in directing the activities of our school district. His responsibilities included being directly in charge of all teachers and building programs and aiding in the preparation of the budget. b lliilllllillll Mrs. Moyer I Q . M 55.-ix it :asf :X Qfiwe y Administrators' Assistants Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Moyer were the secre- taries for the office of the Jersey Shore School District. Their jobs were to take care of the secretarial work which concerned the school district. Mrs. Smith was absent when the picture was taken. x 6 1 Y ' ine 5, v N Mr. Kenneth B. Crosser Principal The school secretaries were Miss Helen Myers and Miss Linda Rall. Their jobs were to attend to the secretarial work of the office and to help students on school business. Q Mr. Young, Mr. Bowes, Mr. Pecchia Although it was his first year as principal, Mr. Crosser handled the tasks of his new job with all the efficiency of a veteran administrator. When interviewed, he described the year as a surprise package, meaning that he never really knew what to expect. The green Mr. Crosser did many things to improve our school. As an active member of the Curriculum Committee, he helped students get the most from their studies and was instrumental in the establishment of new graduation standards. Mr. Crosser hopes that Jersey Shore Senior High School will continue to live up to its previous high standards. His philosophy of life has been to do the thing you are most happy doing and do it well, and we all know that he has done a first rate job of living up to it. 5 as iii Q r f MK g. H Miss Linda Rall and Miss Helen Myers Guidance Our Guidance Department helped students in a number of ways. Deciding on a vocation, finding a job, making a schedule change, or selecting a college were just a few of the many f M ways they helped us. fg 7 English 1 1 SEATED: Mrs. Decker, Miss Taylor, Mrs. Getty. Ng . l L 1 Presenting problems confronting the student body to the faculty and administration was the main objective of members of the Student Council. Representatives from each home room attended meetings where they could suggest methods of correcting conditions about the school which needed improvement or submit ideas for starting new and interesting projects. Among the new and successful projects undertaken by the council was a Christmas door decorating contest to promote the Christmas spirit and bring about a deeper fellowship among the students before the holidays. One of the most successful projects conducted by the Student Council was Operation Christmas, designed to provide needy families with canned food and chickens for their holiday dinners, When school terminated for the holidays and the rest of the student body rushed home, the Student Council members were busy pouring tea and coffee for the faculty members and past graduates of J SSH. The tea was held to reunite the graduates with their teachers and was labeled a success by both parties. One of the most unusual projects was Carrot Dayf' a highly worthwhile and much appreciated cooperative endeavor for the benefit of Miss Susan Sealy. They closed the year by cooperating with the Save the Children Federation by sending clothing to Appalachian families. Throughout the year the Student Council was always willing to accept new ideas, trying hard to introduce them into their regular program as new projects and, under the guidance of Mr. Pecchia, they strove to better the student's environment within the school. -:fs 41 Treasurer OFFICERS 's..J .............Da.r1aCha.rles . To wind up '67, they escorted everyone's friend, Kris Kringle, to his Jersey Shore headquarters. The following four months were filled with diligent preparation for the annual spring concert presented on April 4 and 5. Dedicated to the late Frank L. Schoendorfer, it featured two solos, various classical selections, and the immortal Stars and Stripes For- ever. To reward three years of dedication, the senior members were again guests of the Band Parents' Association for their trip to the Ice Capades at Hershey in February. It takes a lot of hard work and practice to present a successful choral concert. The faithful members of our high school chorus reported to the band room every Tuesday and Friday morning by 8:25 and stayed there, lifting their voices in song, until 9:20. In addition to these first periods, rehearsals were held after school to prepare for the six performances they presented throughout the year. .This year the Glee Club put on not only a Christmas and a Spring conc rt, but also Down in the Valley, an opera based on several w ll known American folk songs. Within this large organization were several smaller groups: the A Cappella choir, the best voices in the Glee Club, the chorus in Down in the Valleyf' and the Baccalaureate Chonrs, the best freshman, sophomore, and junior voices who sang for the graduating seniors at their worship service. Losing 4 straight, including our 42-O defeat by Lock Haven, we needed a win to get started, and we got it by beating Loyalsock 28-O. The following week we hosted undefeated Bellefonte. Bellefonte knew that Jersey Shore always gave them a fight and that's exactly what we did, falling to them in the closing quarter 13-7. The Bulldogs won the next 2 games, first whipping Southern Area 34-14, and then bombing the Trojans of Troy 44-6. In our next game Athens edged us 20-18. Shore's last game was with B. E. A. The unconquered Eagles came down looking for an easy win, but the Bulldogs showed how tough they were with a 7-7 halftime score. Finally, the Eagles edged us 28-20. This year Girardi had a go for the first time with tri-captains. They were Jack Stopper, Rick Boyer, and Paul fSmokeyJ Stover. Starting his first season with a new offensive and defensive attack, it took his starting five a while to perfect his new techniques. It was a long season from beginning to end, losing only by an average of 5 to 10 points per game. In one of the most exciting games of the season, they were outscored by second place State College by only three points. High scorer this year was a 6' 4 senior, Dan Davis, with 242 points. Davis also had the best field goal attempt average of 200185 along with the most offensive and defensive rebounds. John Anderson's J. V.'s closed out the season with 7 wins and 11 losses, outscoring Troy, Penns Valley, BEA, Salvation Army and Renovo. High scorer was Lyle Robinson with 245 points. The powerful Orange and Black won team honors at the rugged District 4 tournament. The Bulldogs failed to have a champion at the B. E. N. tournament. However, second place trophies were captured by John Aurand, Larry Davidson, Dennis Norman, and Jay Green. John Aurand, 95 1bs.g Larry Davidson, 112 lbs., Buddy Hauser, 133 lbs., and Dennis Norman, 145 lbs., all won Sectional finals and ad- vanced into Districts. Davidson and Norman became the first two District champions for coach Rod Laub, and numbers 4 and 5 in the school's history. Davidson advanced through Regional finals and became the first State runnerup in the history of the Jersey Shore High School. We were all very proud of him and will be there cheering him on to a State championship next year! l That new hairspray I tried doesn't work very well! The Junior-Senior Prom, Class Day, and Baccalau- reate led the seniors to their final step in high school-GRADUATION. The class of '68 was indeed a class of firsts. lt was the first class to graduate under the leadership of the new principal, Mr. Crosserg the first class to have two full time advisersg the first class to have caps and gowns in their class colors, and it was the first class to establish an official school crest for use on announce- ments. The class motto was Be civil to allg serviceable to many, friend to everyoneg enemy to none. The flower was a baby rose and the colors were burgundy and white.
