Assistant t'oacll.- FOOTBALL August lfl,l949-Tliis date marks the beginning of a sensational championship season for the Bull- dogs of Jersey Shore High. Yes, Coach Hart pre- dictated a few years back that, M49 is our season. and it really was. Our Bulldogs tore through the opponents in such a Hne style that there wasnit any doubt that these Champions were playing their level best for good old J. S. High. Hats off to a great team! JERSEY SHORE I9 MONTOUIISVILLE 7 Xvasting no time, the Bulldogs romped to a l9-7 conquest of a strong Wa1'1'ior Eleven. Outstanding play of the game was when Kennedy, Shore center, went for a touchdown only to have it called back. lVIontoursville went on to win the West Branch title. JERSEY SHORE 34 LOCK HAVEN 0 Nels Hoffman in his debut against Bulldogs of Jersey Shore, coached by Hart who in his high school days played for ,l. S. under Hoffman, really found going almost impossible as Jersey Shore completely Outclassed the Bobcats in the annual classic. Outstanding play in the game-Reid's in- terception of a Bobcat pass and touchdown jaunt early in the game. JERSEY SHORE 27 RENOVO 0 Bulldog substitutes gained much valuable ex- perience here playing most of the last three quarters. After insuring a victory with a couple of td's in the first few minutes. Coach Hart emptied the bench. Outstanding play of the game was using the regular backfield on the line and some of the linemen in the backfield, combined with blocking of fullback Francis and the center line. .ll'IRSlCY SHORE 31 B1,OOMsRuRc 6 ,lersey Shore's vaunted attackers were held in check during most of the first half by a good Bloom team, but the Bloom team couldnlt stand up under our strong attack during the second half. Outstand- ing play in the game was Fergusonis 50 yard scamp- er for a touchdown which broke the ice in the see- Ond quarter. JERSEY SHORE 21 MILTON 1.3 A well-drilled Milton eleven threw a scare into the Bulldogs before the Bulldogs roused themselves and came from behind to win 21-13. Before the game was 6 minutes Old, Milton had a 13-0 lead but couldn't hold it. Jrzasm' Snomc 26 DANVILLE 0 As in the previous games, the Bulldogs scored at will and also substituted freely in the game. Out- standing in the game was the great work of the backfield. Jiznsm' Suomi 341 BEi.l.i:roNTE 0 Scoring 2 touchdowns in the first half and 3 more in the third quarter. the Bulldogs rolled on to their fifth straight victory over a supposedly powerful Raider eleven. Outstanding in the game was the sensational ground gaining of Ferguson. Ream. and Reidg and the Bulldogs rebounding like champions should, scored touchdowns in the sec- ond and third periods. Also outstanding were Haney. Kennedy, Decapria converging on Snyder, Bellefonte kicker, and blocking his attempted punt. and Carpenter picking up the pigskin and dancing over from the 23. Junsm Snoaa 20 Sourn Wn.1.1AMsPoRT 13 An injury to Ferguson, the Bulldog's star half- hack. stunned the entire team so badly that they were trailing a l3-0 defeat at third quarter mark. But with the return of Ferguson in the fourth quarter the champions began rolling again. Out- standing in the game was Reid's interception of a South pass which completely befuddled the South Nlountaineers and again got the Bulldog attack rolling. Jicasm' Snom: 43 EMPORIUM 7 ln rolling to their ninth straight victory. the Bulldogs had no trouble scoring as they pleased. Outstanding in the game was the way Kennedy moved in the quarterback spot of Don Reid and scored the first touchdown in his high school career. Jrzasm' Snom: 20 TYRONE 0 Finishing out the se a s on in championship fashion. the Bulldogs heat Tyrone high for the first time in twenty-five years. Outstanding in the game was the running of Ferguson and Ream. Certainly we can he proud of this championship team. Rain or shine our boys waltzed through each game with team-work and spirit seldom found on schoolboy teams. Special congratulations to those champions who played their last game for J. S. CROXVNING OF THE QUEEN The School Council members who rushed around frantically on Friday, January 6 were making final preparations for the crowning of the Tiadaghton Bowl Queen after the game that night. This festival of crowning a beauty queen selected by popu- lar vote by the upper classes of the school and the presentation of a loving cup is an animal event of our school. It was given the name Tiadaghton Bowl Festival in honor of the famous Tiadaghton Elm at Pine Creek. This elm was the historical site of the signing of a separate Declaration of lndependence of the local settlers at the same time the famous Declaration was being signed in Philadelphia. This year the queen was Sherrill Hiller, a member of the class of l95l. Her name, together with the score of the game preceding the crowning, was placed on a jug filled with Pine Creek water which rests in the trophy case. This jug bears the names and scores from the preceding festivals. ll' bo VARSITY BASKETBALL Kucrlinff. Lvjf to lfiyllf Anthony Monrlell. lticlmrd t'nrpcntcr. Burt Francis. Ray Ferguson. Donald Reid. They missed only one of the foot- liall games. ln Octolier they played at Wallitlt Street School's lee Cream Festival, and marched in the Hallowe'en Parade. On November ll they made their annual trip to Williamsport for the Armistice Day Parade, and when they came home serenaded at the American Legion Home. Also in November they helped usher Santa Claus in by leading the Christmas Parade for the Merchants Association. Representatives were sent to District Band at Coudersport, in .lanuary and to State Band at Hazle- ton in Feliruary. On March 27 and 23 they were on stage presenting the Band Concert. After having a very successful year. the Band and Orchestra Mothers Association entertained the Band and Orchestra at their annual party. The student body no longer worries about them, as the students know it is the concert orchestra practicing, under the beating baton of Mr. Schoendorfcr. The Orchestra is composed of 36 members and was heard quite often around school this year. The Orchestra started its career this year by playing a concert for the High School P. T. A. on Oct. 13. A short time after that, on Oct. 20, they played at the high school for the B. P. Wfs Pennsylvania Week program. On Dec. 8 they played for the Senior Class Play. The Orchestra sent representa- tives to District Orchestra at Martinsburg, March 9, 10, 11, and to State Orchestra at Hanover, March 30, 31, and April 1. On February 26, they played for the Lycoming County District Sunday School meeting at the St. John's Lutheran Church, and April 20 and 21, for the Junior Class Play. They ended the year successfully by playing for the annual commencement exercises. f s l. . 4 M,.MM..f,.a-W ff MW Left to Right, First Row-Mr. Schoendorfer fbirectorj, Helen Elaine Myers, Mary Kay Jackson. Tri-Hi-Y Weire the club that sponsors all those silly initiations at the beginning of the year by making those poor Juniors look as if they just escaped from an asylum. Before we did all this we drafted Mrs. Teufel into being our adviser. We then proceeded to the auditorium one bright morning to elect the following officers: President ------ - CONNIE WVINTERS Vice-president - MIRIAM ENGLISH Secretary - - JOAN DORWART Treasurer RUTH BILLMAN Chaplain - BARBARA Bowes We combined with the Hi-Y to sponsor a very gala Thanksgiving Semi-Formal, which was a grand success. Whatis this? Girls bringing toys to Tri-Hi-Y meetings? Yes. we were working on Christmas baskets which were distributed to needy people in town. We have been considerably more active than any other club before us, and also have a larger group. There are 60 loyal members of the 1949-50 Tri-Hi-Y. 62 lvff fo Ifirllif Firwf Noir- Donnlel l'urrv Neil Klinefelter. lbonnlcl Kenneilv. Rav FOI'5.!llS0ll. Hi -Y This year we, the holdovers from last year's 1-lub, got a little reckless and let 20 new members come into the club. This gave a grand total of 45 members. The nf-ophytes,' got oil mighty easy this year. The reason for this let-up on punishment administered, was due to the fact that the boys didn't look too healthy. So, we gave them more mental labor than physical beating. There were many activities planned for the Club in l950. Some of these were having our blood typed, a supper for the club members and a hay ride. The big social event was a Thanksgiving Day dance sponsored by the Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y Clubs. Having acquired suflicient experi- ence by the second semester to struggle through a major election we chose the follow- ing officers: President - - RAY FERGUSON V ice-president - EUGENE LORSON Secretary - CONNIE WINTERS Treasurer - - - DONNA MYERS Our class adviser for that green year was Mrs. Weiler. Through the efforts of our class oflicers we conducted the social high-light of our freshman year, our first school party. What a thrill for us then! We started our sophomore year with 141 students having lost 19 over the summer vacation. OFFICERS President - - - - RAY FERGUSON Vice-president - EUGENE LORSON Secretary - - CONNIE WINTERS Treasurer ----- - HENRY DURRWACHTER These officers helped guide us through our sophomore year. We didn't need much help this year, however, as we were learning, slowly but surely, to take care of ourselves. The biggest thrill this year was selecting our class rings. As the year be- fore, our only social event was our annual class party. Mr. Courtney was our adviser for this year. Attaining the goal of upper classmen, with an enrollment of 117 we, as juniors elected: President - - DONALD KENNEDY Vice-president - RAY FERGUSON Secretary - - DICK CARPENTER Treasurer ------- HENRY DURRWAGHTER Our very capable class adviser was Mrs. Daugherty. Social events included the winning of a prize for a float in the Hallowe'en Parade, annual school party and the sponsoring of the Junior-Senior Prom at which we entertained the seniors. Then we had our first try at dramatics by presenting our junior class play titled Susie . We finally reached the stage where we could be called sophisticated. Yes, we were seniors. l Thi term of 1949-50 will long be remembered, not only as the year we became seniors, but also as the year in which the Jersey Shore Bulldogs rolled through an un- beaten season to attain the undisputed title of Susquehanna Champions . Of course, this is no doubt due to the fact that nine of the eleven on the varsity squad were effi- cient, hard hitting, super-human behemoths of tl1e gridiron, Seniors! 76 To help us in this distinguished year we elected: President ------- DoNALD KENNEDY Vice-president - RAY FERGUSON Secretary - - - DICK CARPENTER Treasurer -------- GEORGE Woonmc tYou see, the football team was well representedj Our class adviser for this year was hard-working Mr. Jarmoska. Again, as last year, we won a prize for our float in the Hallowe'en Parade. This year, being experienced, we presented our biggest and best play, titled The Bogeymanf, Witnessed by two packed houses, this production was a great success. We also held our annual class party. We ended the term by being entertained at the annual Junior-Senior Prom, which the Juniors sponsored in our honor. This was the grand final of our four thrill-packed and history-making years in good old J. S. H. S. Class Poem If you could go hack about four years ago, You'd find us just freshmen, not much did we know. We entered these halls a trifle in wonder it seems, Because this was the answer to all of our dreams. To those who have taught us we owe our thanks, That we have gotten so high in our ranks. We've fallen behind and come back as a team, 'Cause this was our vision, our hope, and our dream. Today is our last to be one of you, Tomorrow we start in a life that is new. So we hope that you will know what we mean, When we say that this-this day was our dream. Weire sorry-now to say farewell, But our tales of you we will always tell. When we finally succeed, our banners will stream, And weill know we've completed our childhoodis dream. But now we wonder, will we really be gone? Or will our mem'ries reign bright as the dawn? And so as'we leave you, in well known-esteem, We give you the chance to go on with our dream. MARTHA THOMAS 77 S E N I O R S PAUL W.
