IHI4 OlekXfIL AND PI XLR the grandchildren experiences of my unsurpassed courage and bravery during the flood of 36 My story begins on that fateful evening of Tuesday March I7 At that time those of us who were to go to Wellsboro to play in the All District Band were having rehearsal at the High School building Eyervthinv was gliding smoothly along when some one came to the door with the exciting news that the river was rising fast Of course this ruined band practice for that night so Mr Schoendorfer allowed us to lease Several of us aroused by this bit of news as young men always are decided to go down and see the river on its second rampage within a week This we did after pulling Mr Schoendorfer s car out of the mud We were somewhat disappointed upon reaching the riyer though because it was not so high as it had been the week before While watching the swiftly moving waters rush to the s I receiyed the first inklmg of what was about to happen A young fellow standing next to me on the bridge said Say you d better get home The water s up around your place A little skeptical I started for home trying to figure out how this could be true for as I have said above the water had been higher than it was at this time but still it had not reached us coln under water There I was with overshoes on and four inches of water before me What could be more embarrassing? Not for long was I held up howey er for who should come along but Charlie Graham and Ernest English with boots on Well to make a long story short I was ferried across and reached home with dry feet but Ernest stumbled and fell head first into the gutter then containing two and a half feet of water Once inside the worst was yet to come With all the radio warn ings and all the evident dangers of the rising water still we could not believe that our house could possibly be flooded Nevertheless we began carrying canned fruit and some coal up from the cellar thinking that the basement might become half full of water About midnight I went to bed only to be awakened two hours later by a combination of noises Just outside my window a truck driver had attempted to turn the corner too sharply and his back wheels had fallen into the gutter From the rear of the house came a yiolent churning this turned out to be my father who was also stuck So with my eyes still laden with sleep I jumped into my clothes and hurried outside By this time the water was knee deep and the motor in our car soon drowned itself A wrecker also stalled while attempting to get us out Finally conyinced of the folly of dodging the 1SSue any longer we set to work In the space of a few hours every piece of furniture had to be remoyed from the first floor And such a job Outside throughout the darkest hours of the early morning the muddy sw irling waters crept upward its icy fingers clutching every thing within reach The lights from the windows of almost every I2 H 1 7 '. fi' .f in- 1 h Q I v y V 7 I I .
