Hail Carnival Royalty The uproar and excitement of the annual carnival subsided as the crowd gathered in the gym to witness the crowning of the 1951 carnival queen. After the trumpeters, Iames Fulks and Noble Heider, had commanded silence, the guards, Miss Lois Griffith and Miss Carol Tribble, prepared the way. Then the master of ceremonies, Robert Brown, an- nounced the lunior candidate, Miss Dottie Cates, escorted by Lawrence Powers, Next came Miss loan Moyer, the Freshman candid- ate, with her escort William Woolsey. Follow- ing them were, Miss Myrna Kay Scoggins, the e182 Sophomore candidate, and her escort Lloyd Sams. With quiet dignity the retiring queen, Miss Rita Schleeper, with her escort, Dale Bridgewater, then took her place in the court. With a blare of trumpets the long-awaited announcement of the new queen was made. Miss Eva Lou Oettle and her escort William Heafner ascended the throne, accompanied by her trainbearers, Masters Iames and Ioseph Gowin, and her flower girls, little Misses Diana Pickerel and Nancy Erwin, and was crowned by the retiring queen, thus beginning her reign. ,,.,,.. , 'QS' X ,, J I pn iii How We Spent Our Year AUGUST School begms wlth a hundred and elghty green freshres and a clutter of reglstratron papers SEPTEMBER Cheer leaders are elected Yea bluel Yea whltel Flrst football game w1th Roxana fwe lostl Sm1le boys and glrls these prctures are for the 1 Band sends off troops w1th muslcal farewell OCTOBER Mr Pmkston leaves for actlve mlhtary servlce A deep sea d1v1ng lecture m the afternoon Our frrst dance the Freshman Dance what a day Rlp Van Wlnkle twenty years of sleep and rest Wlthout one gloomy Monday Mr Brrll replaces Mr Pmkston 1n the Art Department Homecomlng floats mustc parade enthuslasm grand chmax we lost Four 1 staff members went to Champalgn Electlon of queen candldates Every class 1S sure 1ts candldate w111 w1n but remember every penny counts NOVEMBER Open house A mce program W1th refreshments for our parents and frlends A wee brt of Scotland brought to our school by four laddles W1th kllts and bagplpes Senlor dance a successful fun fllled good old harvest trme dance The annual football banquet No women admltted lt was a grand feast Ld 24 Thanksglvlng hol1days and no school Hurrayl 8 lumor play revenuers moonshmers smokmg p1p6S 30 Basketball began and we lost to East St LOUIS 2 17 19 DECEMBER Btology party Who sard brology was noth1ng but bug studymg? They have added much zest to the occasions with specially prepared shows, which includ- ed accurate formations, choirs, special arrangements, lights and fireworks, vocal and instrumental numbers- Muskat Ramble , You're lust ln Love , lf l Were A Bell , and 'Rose Room . ln addition to appearing at games and at pep meetings, the band also exhibited its fine technique at many varied public performances, including the homeecoming parade, the Senior Carnival, Commencement, the spring festival at facksonville, and other special functions at the school. This versatile group of musicians, comprised of seventy-three members, fifteen per cent of the student body, makes approximately twentyffive public appearances each school year. They feature a repertoire of every type of iiiusicesymphonic, martial, and dance band arrangements. We were proud of our high-stepping :naiorettes and their splendid per- formances of drill routines, twirling, and Swissfflag swinging, all of which displayed their admirable ability. 1 1 - A . .
