This year's chapter of the ,Teromesville Future Homemaker's of America had a total of sixty-five members. This is another record membership for the chapter. The program for the year consisted of many activities. The chapter again worked for the Award of Merit, a state honor which is becoming more difficult to achieve. Other outstanding activities were these: candy sale, a Christmas party for Elyria Children's Hos- pital and Ashland County Children's Home, the Party for Pops, the celebration of NationalF.H.A. week, and a Senior Farewell Party where the new officers were installed. The annual field trip was taken in February. For the first time in several years the chapter had an ex- hibit at the county fair and received the highest rating for F.l'l.A. Chapters. Six chapter mothers were chosen to represent the chapter this year. They were: Mrs. Emma Maxwell, Mrs. Kate Dilgard, Mrs. Cordelia Austin, Mrs. Pearl Paullin, Mrs. Emily Fast and Mrs. Eileen Smith. Officers are the following: President, Karen Austin: Vice-President, Cleora Smith, Secretary, Beverly Dilgard: Treasurer, Norma Fulk: Historian, Phyllis Paulling Par- liamentarian, Lois Lewis: Pianist, Marilyn Faber: Song Leader, Nellie Walker. rf:-vmam. 33 ws SOCIAL CO MITTEE The Social Committee, with its adviser Mrs. Miner, planned all the parties that the high school had this year. They consisted of a Sadie Hawkins Day Party, the Christmas exchange and party during school, the Shamrock Hop, and a picnic at the end of the year. The Assembly Committee, with its adviser Mrs. Murray, planned all the assemblies that enter- tained the students this year. A few of the assemblies were presented by the students. The other performers were Mr. Grathwell, who told the story of the F.B.I.g Sjobiarn, a pianistg and Fred Lowery, a whistler. FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: G. Spring, S. Fulk, R. Max- well, J. JUNIOR PLAY RAN TWO NIGHTS FOR FIRST TIME The juniors successfully staged their class play November 14 and 15. They presented Joseph Kessel- ring's ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, a three-act farce. The setting of the play was the Victorian home of the Brewster sisters, Abby, a little darling in her late sixties, played by Karen Austin, and Martha, a sweet elderly lady of Victorian charm, played by Linda Blough. The two ladies had a very clever scheme of being kind to elderly gentlemen. Mortimer Brewster, their nephew, and Elaine Harper, his fiancee, did very well in adding a touch of romance. These parts were played by Bob Kyler and Ann Herron. Rudy Badertscher played the part of Jonathan, the criminal brother who appears at the scene of the crime with his chief companion Dr. Einstein, alias .T im Sheaffer. Terry Morgan took the part of Teddy Brewster, an eccentric man who firmly believed he was Teddy Roosevelt. The Reverend Harper, another innocent bystander, was played by Sam Hines. John Hopkins, playing Mr. Gibbs, asked for nothing more than a room, and Kenny Rowland, portraying Mr. Witherspoon of Happy Dale Sanitariam, seemed to have the answer to some very baffling questions. Lieutenant Rooney also offered help to solve the problem. Rooney's assistants on the police force, the dumbest of dumb cops, were Ron Garst, Dave Burrell, and Roger Hawks. David Heffelfinger kindly offered his dead body to the reality of the undertaking, Mrs. Olive' Murray did a commendable .job directing the play. She was assisted by student director, Kay Hoverstock. 36 THE PIANS The class of '59 has twelve National Thespian members. Larry Cutlip was chosen President of our troup 1647. ,Tim Urban acts as Vice-President, Judy Seibert as Treasurer, Carol Austin as Secretary, and Keith Hoverstock as clerk. The adviser of this local troupe is Mrs. Dwain Murray. National Thespians endeavor to promote through the activities an interest in dramatics and larger speech experiences. Last spring Patty Gray was chosen the Best Thespiang Annette Ables, Best Actressg Russell Licke- foose, Best Actorg and Larry Cutlip, Best Supporting Actor. Russell Zickefoose, Sandy Spotts, and An- nette Ables became Two Star Thespians, and Wendell Weikel, One Star. The annual Spring Banquet and initiation was held in the Wharf Room at the Cottage Restaurant in Ashland. JU ICR-SE ICR PROM OF l95S WATER WoNDERLANp I I The night of May 9, 1958, was an important evening for our Junior class. At last all our hard work and planning was becoming a reality. Our theme was Water Wonderland. The gym was decorated with blue and silver crepe paper to look like waves. The punch was served from a replica of a submarine. There was a treasure chest in one corner of the gym. Thewall was decorated with mermaids and fish, both made of painted cardboard, and there was a large wishing well in the center of the floor. Inside were goldfish and various sizes and colors of sea shells. Bob Kyler was Master of Ceremonies for the entertainment. Lynda Gray and Dana Gardner sang Water Wonderland , a song which they composed. Music was supplied by Dave Stouder's Quintet. We, the Seniors of 1959, know that this night will remain in our memories for years to come. Lois Lewis and Kenny Rowland, '58 Sophomores, serve punch. The beautiful evening of October 10, marked the eighth annual Homecoming festivities for Jeromes- ville High. As the noise of the cheering section subsided, five anxious girls waited to be announced and escorted onto the football field. Sam Hines, Master of Ceremonies, introduced each of the girls as she was driven around the field on a shiny new convertible. Upon arriving in front of the student section, each attendant was escorted by a football player. Freshman attendant, Nellie Walker was escorted by Stevellines, whi1cJiml5ee was the escort of Peggy Knowlton, sophomore attendant. Escorting junior attendant Judy Myers was Tom Urban. Keith Hoverstock served as escort to Carol Austin, senior attendant, and Dick Stull escorted the 1957 Queen, Theda Deuney. The 1958 Homecoming Queen, Norma Fulk, decorated the arm of the Bluejays' captain, Jim Urban. Danny Sheaffer, crown bearer, assisted Miss Denney, in crowning Queen Norma. After a victorious game with LaRue, the Homecoming dance was held in the school auditorium. The dance was opened by the queen and her court dancing the Royal Dance. Davc Stouder's Quintet provided thc music. 'T FIRST ROW: N. Fulk, L. Carman. SECOND ROW:J. Myers, B. Dilgard. RLEADERS This year our varsity cheerleading squad consisted of four girls. These girls served for both football and basketball. They also planned the pep rallies and put up posters to create interest. The varsity and junior varsity attended a cheerleading clinic at Canton, Ohio, where they learned new techniques of cheering. The varsity cheerleaders wore blue pleated skirts with white crew neck sweaters for both foot- ball and basketball. THLETIC ASSOCIATIO FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Valentine, C. The defense was held together by ,Tim Schweyer s aver- age of 14.6 tackles per' game, which bettered his 1958 nation topping average of 12.0, Tom Urban s 12.3 and ,Tim Urban's 9.25 tackles per game. We are proud of our quarterback, Wendell Weikel, who was honored by the Ashland Times Gazette as the Most Valuable Football Player in all of Ashland County. He also made the first team of the all county along with Dick Stull, Tom Urban, and ,Tim Urban. Larry Cutlip, Keith Hoverstock, Kenny Roland, and ,Tim Schweyer were also selected to all county positions. The football team was honored by an athletic banquet served at the school. For the first time since 1948 we won the county league trophy, We also won the County Tournament which makes the first time that both trophies have graced our halls since 1931. Of the first five players, Co-Captain Dick Stull led the team with 372 points for an average of 20.7 points per game, Our leading, rebounders were Larry Garn with l4, 9 rebounds per game and Tom Urban who had 13. 5 rebounds, Co-Captain Wendell Weikel was one of our best defensive men and also led the team in assists. John Hopkins, who had the best foul-shooting percentage, was also one of our best defensive men, The aggressive spirit seemed to be the spark of the Blue Jays as they rolled over their opponents, One of the highlights of the season was the thrilling game that opened the Sectional Tournament. The hard -fighting Blue Jays lost a heartbreaker to last year's state champions, Northwestern High School. 1 OPPONENT J. H. S. The 1958 Blue ,Tay track season wasn't as successful as in previous seasons. This was the first time .Teromesville lost the Ashland County Track meet. The meet was very close, and we lost out in the final event by one point. However, most of the boys on the track team were Juniors and Sophomores which gives us a very promising future. We can still boast that we have never lost a dual meet in school history and that we placed sixth in the district and third at Doylestown. The lettermen we lost are: Dean Smith, Ray Hall, and Paul Ewing. Returning lettermen are Dick Stull, Keith Hoverstock, Jim Urban, Tom Urban, Kenny Rowland, Larry Cutlip, ,Terry Meng, and Duane Garn. Two outstanding boys this season were Dick Stull and Keith Hoverstock. Dick set a school record of 20' 4 in the broad jump at the district, set a county high hurdles record with a time of 16.1 seconds, placed third in the high hurdles at the district, and placed sixth in the broad jump at the state. Keith set a school record of 5' 8 1!4 at Doylestown, and placed first in the high jump with a mark of 5' 7 lf 4 which set a county record. He also tied for second place in the district track meet in the high jump. 52 BA EBALL STANDING, LEFT TO RIGHT: T. Riggle, G. Kauffman, D. Heffelfinger, D. Garn, T. Galliher, L. Cutlip. Since the annual went to press before the 1959 season began, it was not possible to publish any- thing about it, therefore, the above picture is of the 1958 team. The team turned in a record of one win and three losses. Experience seemed to be what was most desired. This year 's team had only two seniors so most of the players will be back next year. Jim Urban, Dick Stull, and John Hopkins shared the pitching duties for the team, also alternated playing infield. The remainder of the infield was composed of Wendell Weikel, Deam Smith, Tom Urban, Kenny Rowland, Tim Riggle, and Dave Heffelfinger. The outfielders were: Larry Cutlip, Larry Garn and John McKinley. The outlook for the 1959 season is very good. We are looking forward to a championship season. 53 G.A.C. FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: A. Garman, S. Brookover, J. Glasgo, A. Herron, K. Hoverstock, R.
