Remember the gold stars pasted on our foreneads for being good, tape on our mouths, spats, writing spelling words after school and the first day we started using ink in the third grade? We have come a long way since those days. Everything was chang- ed the day we entered nigh school as lrlgntened and very green rreshmen, seniors loomed above us terrifyingly big, but none the less awe inspiring. we trembled if one spoke to us. A1- ter a week of tramping out our mia- tions in stocking feet, and such, we settled down to business. As freshmen we were quiet and seri- ous. bchool dances were started that year and although we weren't respon- sible we like to think we helped. Bish, Jorgy and Plasty surprised ev- eryone by becoming football letter- men as freshman and laid the firm foundation for a champion football team in the future. Seven J's were issued to the Frosh that year for football, boxing, basketball, and debate. Not a bad start! We began to get wise as Sopho- l110l'0S. We boldly turned out to school dances and even sponsored one. No one came but us. Uur ego- ism fell with a sickening thud. We nad a concession at the J-Club carni- val with pine cakes being one topic. The first Tiger in years was publish- ed and we boobs were determined to have the best one yet, when our time came. We became upper classmen the autumn of '39. This year we became quite active. Members of our class promoted the first formal speech banquet, to become an annual affair. When the annual of the year began to slip, the J-Club, pushed by several Juniors, took it up and sold the ne- cessary amount. It seemed we were always fighting for something. Again we took charge of a school hop with moderate success. Our Junior Prom was realized on December 23. De- corated with Christmas trees, colored lights and pine boughs, the outstand- ing feature was a gigantic picture of Santa Claus and reindeer, painted across the end of the hall Dy Junior A-ndrus. This year saw our Iirst dlp into finances. With the nickel left by the Seniors in our treasury we felt like a party but this was squelch- ed. Five cents seemed insufficient for 116 people. We left it in our treasury. Our Senior year came. We ruled -and yet we couldn't believe it. Things went on as usual and we be- gan to see the end of our high school days. During this year we had a cham- pionship football team and boxing squad. The student council became very active. We exchanged assem- blies with different schools. With our finances in the condition they were, we sold magazines for the Curt- is Company. A contest developed- boys against girls. The girls lost and thus they paid the penalty of giving a party at their expense. A seige took the school one time and eight girls in our class mar- ried and approximately eight more were engaged. Again we had trouble starting sales on the annual but we feel our efforts were not in vain. The Senior Ball was January 17. Decorations were in a winter theme with novel programs and the dances were carefully labeled. Our colors are blue and white. We have carried these colors in our an- nouncements and for the first time in J.H.S. history we will graduate in b.ue and white gowns-blue for the boys and white for the girls. We are the largest class to gradu- ate in Jerome. We have had a won- derful time and perhaps have achiev- ed a little. Now that it is ending we find it hard to leave. We hope the classes who follow us will find as much happiness as we have in Jer- ome High School. This has caused ev- eryone to receive more benefit from the li- brary and few books have been lost. DEBATE The debate team, though small this year, had 21 C0mParatively successful season. Coach- gd by Mr. Smith, the team debated the topic, Resolved: That the power of the Federal Government should be increased, with high school opponents from all over the state. On March 14-15 the Jerome debaters attended the Statesman Invitational Meet at B-oise and tied with Nampa for third place. At the Dis- trict Meet on March 26, Jerome again won third place honors. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Future Farmers of America are an organization of agriculture students. Those members who attend the judging match at Moscow were: Voit Hudspeth, Richmond Burks, Francis Sheppeard, Elmer Timm, Mar- ston Hessler and Charles Vining. Those who went on the judging trip to Ogden, Utah were: Lyman Holloway, Marston Hessler, IVLGIIIQ Spencer, David Hemphill and Alfred Mobley. The boys also entered three judging contests-two at Filer and one at Thousand Springs, organized a Jerome F.F.A. Swine Breeder's Association and sponsored a pest drive. J-CLUB The J-Club and its advisor Mr. Martin initiated the new members this year at a school dance where every initiate was re- quired to attend in some outlandish costumfe. This club also sponsored some matinee dances. GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION For the first time, Jerome High School girls became members of the national Girl's Athletic Association this year under the lead- ership of Miss Leach. The group entered all types of intramural sports and other athletics such as hiking, skating and bike riding. .The social activities included sponsoring matinee dances and a Coed Ball. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Ec Club is a group of girls taking home economics under Miss Bell. Their project for this year was that of learning 1n- teresting facts about Mexico to try to be bet- ter neighbors with this country to the south of us. On April 19 fourteen or the members attended the District Home Economics Stu- dent Club Day at Boise. Helen Lawshe was the district secretary. At the meeting, Janice Freeman took part in the round-table dis- cussion of Home Making and Americanism. DECLAMATION A preliminary contest in declamation was held early in February under the direc- tion of Miss Jones. There was a great deal of interest sh-own and the competition was stiff but a team was finally selected. The 1940 football season was a great success. The Tigers went through their Big Seven Conference games undefeated and consequently. won the Championship. This feat kept the BILL HATCH TROPHY in our trophy case for one more year. The Tigers were well represented on the All-Star Team having placed Ehler and Plastino on the first team, Cole and Jorgensen on the second team and Blamires and Goodrich got honorable mention. A-t the end of the season the Tigers elected Bill Ehler and Clarence Bishop as their co-captains. 1940 SCHEDULE We They Shoshone, there ,, ,.,,. 123 12 Goodingr, here ,, ,, ,. 6 6 Filer, here ..,,,, ..,,. 2 5 13 Oakley, there ,... ,,,,, 1 3 7 Rupert, there , .,,, 26 0 Buhl, here ,,..., ,,,, 2 5 lil Hurley, here ,,,,,,,, H232 IL! Though the taste of victory was not in the mouths of the Tigers during basketball season, frequently the scores were close and the games were nip and tuck. The best game of the year for Jerome were those played at the Tournament in Twin Falls. Here, they were barely edged out of their second game bv the Buhl Indians by a score of 23-25. Captain Bob Blamires was the standout of the team, and, although he graduates this year, there are many promising' boys coming out next year. 1940-41 SCHEDULE Deg Shoshone, there Dec, Shoshone, here Jan. In a schedule of fifteen bouts, not in- cluding the tournament, they won all but three. They lost one and tied one with Shelley and also tied one with Kimberly. ln all three of these matches, however, only part of the squad was used and the whole team was not put into action. It was only at the State High School Boxing Tournament that the full squad was given a chance to show their superiority and this they did, taking the championship with the greatest of ease. Bishop, Fisher, Holloway, V. Hall, G. Hall and Bill Ehler were awarded golden gloves and Kinsfather received a silver one. Bishop and Holloway received their golden gloves the second consecutive year. At the end of the season Gilbert Hall was elected captain. The faculty and students of the Jerome High School offer their utmost appreciation for the services donated by Johnny Robinson and Tommy Beall in coaching the squad.
