Works To Reflect IHS The monthly TOMAHAWK TIMES broke some chains this past year allowing it to move ahead at a rapid pace. The first chain it broke was one of timidness and censorshipg the staff this year was resolved to print the truth and present things accurately, and, goinga step beyond, present its editorial perspective without fear and para- noia. Secondly, it broke the chain of complacen- cy. The editorial staff was annoyed at the juvenile and shallow material of the past, and, never be- ing satisfied with itself, attempted to fill its pages with more solid and far-ranging material. They were attempting to trace the heartbeat of the high school with articulation and integrity. BACK ROW-Tim Jorgensen, Charlie Pitlyk, Dave Ernst, Kevin Webb, Steve Pearl, Dennis Gaddis, Bill Judge. No wins, nine losses. . . injuries. . .a character-building year. . .a rebuilding season . . . we went down fighting CThat's for sure. D. All the cliches could fit but still seem a bit trite. What exactly do you say about a year like 1972? lt was a year that I will never forget. Not because of the won-lost record, but because of ten seniors who made this past season an enjoyable experience. Winning in athletics is always important. It's one of the main objectives in any athletic contest. But, football and coaching involve so much more than just Winning. Football is watching a handful of young sophomores mature in three years into young men. It's Watching those same young men get up off the floor each week to come back and try again and again. It's watching a season of expectation begin in early August and end in violent frustration on a cold, bleak November afternoon, It's watching, striving, hoping, and coaching for victory only to fail each succeeding week. Failure is never easy to accept but it is an especially difficult task for the senior who, unlike the coach, cannot simply say Wait 'till next year . For the senior, next year is now, If this season held sadness and disappointment, it was for that reason. lt's sad but true that too often in our society, the scoreboard of whatever type, is the only gauge of success. But to truly be a winner involves so much more than just the final score. l've had the privilege this past season of helping coach a group of seniors Who were winners every Week regardless of the final score. For that privilege, I sim- ply say Thank you to them. I don't think that we will see their like around here again for quite sometime. - -john Zerjal 79 . - vu- , ,r4. .- -V -3 Cf 'f '5-A -- Y' lf- . f .- ' rx, ' Q ' bTffx 'r X 3 -. ,WL Y..
