There was no Panther offense in the second half, as linebacker Kenny Wall led a much improved second half Dog defense that limited Catholic to one yard total offense in the second half. You can spell the Bulldog’s first victory of the season D-E-F-E-N-S-E, as the maroon and white Bulldog defense, tabbed the “Purple Elephants” by the Gent coaches, gave the Dogs a 20-0 whitewash win over the visiting Crowley Gents. The maturing defense held the vaunted Gent passing attack to seven yards, intercepted two (lent aerials, recovered two Gent fumbles, and blocked a Gent punt- for a very fine night’s work—particularly for a Friday the 13th. „ ... , „ , ” : . . , . . It was a rather frustrating game as far as the Bulldogs were concerned, as they drove down to the 25, 12, and 7 yard lines, only to be stymied by a ferocious Lafayette defense. First, the Dogs evidently liked cold weather, since both wins had come on cold nights. Second, the Bulldog ground attack really moved into high gear, amassing 310 yards on the ground, with Gotreaux powering his way for 112 yards through the middle and Kicky Hebert gaining lf)2 yards on outside sweeps. After A.B. Richard alertly recovered a Ville Platte fumble, the Dogs’ offensive machine cranked up and traveled fil yards, which included Gotreaux’s fine 51 yard sprint and Hebert’s 11 yard TD run. After trading punts Ville Platte was winging its way down to paydirt when Randall Fontenot stepped out of nowhere, intercepted a Ville Platte aerial, and sped 82 yards for the second Bulldog TD, as the first half ended. Failing to move early in the second half, Jennings punted and Ville Platte’s little sprinter returned the punt 82 yards to tighten the score to 13-7. With 2:16 gone in the last quarter, Broussard marshalled the Dogs 51 yards to touchdown country in a drive that included key passes to Billy Duncan and Richard Fontenot, with Broussard going over from the one. Hebert added his second of three PAT’s to make the score 20-7. Ville Platte struck back suddenly on a fake punt, as the kicker passed 62 yards for the score. The Bulldogs again ground out 64 yards with J.W. Gotreaux doing the honors by plunging over from the one. Quarterback Broussard must have figured that one good TD deserves another as he hit Hebert with a 35 yard scoring strike to finalize the score at 33-13. Credit must be given where credit is due, and it was the efforts ol Roy Hebert, Joel Richert, lerry Gaudet, Keith Reed, and Chris Johnson that made it possible for the backs to eat up yardage on the ground. Before the Dragons could belch a flame, the Dogs had put 13 big points on the board. With five minutes gone in the first period, Billy Broussard capped a 70 yard march by plunging over the two yard stripe. Kicky Hebert’s PAT was good, making it 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, the DcRiddcr halfback was separated from the pigskin by a host of vicious Bulldogs. Frank Smith grabbed the hall and darted 33 yards to paydirt to make it 13-0. 1 he Bulldog defense also held up well this night, with a quarter and a half gone before DeKidder registered again from scrimmage. ith 15 seconds left in the hall, tailback Huey Daigle, who gained 132 yards in the game, recorded his first TD with Joel Hichert adding the extra point to make it Bulldogs 20, Dragons 0. l.arly in the third quarter the Bulldogs downed the DcRiddcr punter on his own seven yard line. Lightning struck, not from the sky, hut in the form of Billy Duncan as he took a Broussard aerial and fought his way into the promised land, making it 26-0. Quarterback Tom Prechl came in and engineered two more tallies as he sent John Savoy, J.W. Gotreaux, and Huey Daigle for big yardage through a porous Dragon defense. Three plays deep into tire final quarter, Huey Daigle raced 31 yards down to the DeKidder 13. From there John Savoy found daylight and bolted 13 yards for another six pointer. DeKidder finally tallied six points on a scries of passes: hut the Bulldogs weren’t through, as split-end Richard 1 ontenot took the handoff on a double reverse and galloped 52 yards for the final Jennings TD. Huey Daigle completed the scoring as he bulled his way two yards for the PAT, finalizing the score at 39-6. Bulldogs Axed Oakdale Warriors 26-0 It was General Custer at Little Big Horn all over again Friday, October 11, except the Indians came out on the short end of a 26-0 whitewash. The ninth ranked Jennings Bulldogs, displaying a potent offense along with a magnificent defense, spoiled the Warrior homecoming, and also collected a few scalps for the fun of it to bring their district record to 3-0. One thing about the Dogs—they didn’t waste much time to make a raid on the Warriors’ camp, as scatback Huey Daigle went through the Warrior defense like a knife through butter for 80 yards to paydirt. Joel Kichert added the first of two extra points to make it 7-0 with only 11 seconds gone. The Warriors picked up their feathers and marched down to the Bulldogs’ seven, where Billy Broussard snuffed out their fire by intercepting a pass in his own end zone. A few plays later, helped by a 32-yardT rank Smith-led punt return, J.W. Gotreaux punched over from the five to make it 14-0, with 4:47 left in the first hall. With 14 seconds left in the half, Kenny Wall blocked an Oakdale punt and Keith Reed alertly recovered the ball on the Oakdale one yard stripe. Quarterback Broussard bulled over to make it 20-0 at hall. Both teams played exceptional defense in the third quarter, with both Huey Daigle and A.B. Later in the drive, Huey Daigle crossed into the happy hunting grounds by recovering his own fumble in Oakdale’s end zone to finalize the score at 26-0.
