For without you—as students, teachers, staff members, parents and community members, this ar would not have been the same. The constant hurry left little time for study or quiet moments for ourselves--yet we found time to participate in extracurricular activities, talk with friepds in the hall, decorate class cars, cheer the 'Dogs to state quarter finals, and congratulate the Bulldettes and Band on their State titles. i JggBB mmwssvwr, There are no traces of all the busy scenes--taking exams, traveling to out-of-town events on buses, changing schedules, participating in sports, and racing the tardy bell to class.' After a year of being lost, inexperienced beginners returned to antagonize Freshmen and to pester Juniors and Seniors. Many new friends were made. The J.H.S. halls were thrilling to the freshmen. They were crowded with joy, laughter, gossip and people. The lockers were another convenience, except to the students with bottom lockers. There were many events to be experienced as a freshman. They will have enjoyed every minute of it up until the time they graduate and even then will they miss it. The Jennings Bullpups were very active this past season. In this game the 'Pups played the Crowley freshmen. The 'Dogs came out on top. These boys worked very hard during this year and should do even better next year. Let’s go dogs! The Freshman cheerleaders led the 'Dogs on to victory. The cheerleaders worked as hard as the 'Dogs in bringing J.H.S. spirit to the school. When the students expressed spirit for their school it doubled the team spirit and brought them on to a grand victory. 102 Steps Will Vary In December of 1967 an assembly was called and a member of the Atomic Energy Commission presented to the student body and the faculty a number of experiments using radiation. Three freshmen, John Kuhnell, Johnny Armentor, and Brad Boyd were called on to participate in a demonstration with a radioactive ball. It's almost time for the bell, I must hurry. These freshmen were hard at work on their next assignment. Their first year brought many mixups and difficulties, but in the future years a better understanding of the high school and its faculty and students will make it very enjoyable. Well, it’s that time of year again, spring cleaning. The halls were covered with paper, trash baskets, and other odds and ends. Mr. Harelson declared clean-up day one morning, and everyone went to work. It really was a big job cleaning out some of those lockers. If you don't believe anyone just ask Sandra Caldwell and Val Dailey. What am I going to schedule for next year? These freshmen busily make out their schedules for next year. 103 Favorites BEST ALL-AROUND Nancy Shultz and Billy Moore MOST POPULAR Dianna Babineaux and Daryl Newman Who’s Who Genee Hine and Daryl Newman FRIENDLIEST Judy Breaux and Rod Breaux MOST TALENTED Nancy Marcantel Jerry Richard MOST ATHLETIC Christine Hudson James Green JUNIOR FAVORITES Ricky Hebert, Patti Moore, Vicki Hebert Steve Boyd SOPHOMORE FAVORITES Mike Briggs David Qualls S. Sulphur’s Triple-A Golden Tors proved to be more than a match for the A A ’Dogs as the Tors came out on top 34-0. Sulphur displayed a highly polished offense while the Bulldogs had trouble on both offense and defense plus a disheartening number of costly penalties. Sulphur struck swiftly and put 7 pts.on the board in the first five minutes of the game. A series of costly penalties and a short kick gave the Tors good field position to move in for their second tally. One bad break after another plagued the 'Dogs. A 'Dog fumble put Sulphur in scoring position where they scored their third TD early in the 2nd quarter. Co-captain Darrell Landry grabbed the Tor kick off and took it deep into Sulphur territory but the drive halted. The two teams traded kicks and the 'Dogs proceeded to march downfield with good runs by Billy Broussard and Pooky Green, but the 'Dogs were stopped inside the Sulphur ten. An alert Darrell Landry foiled another Tor drive at the close of the first half. At the beginning of the second half Jennings proceeded to march upfield. but the Bulldogs offense hogged down. The 'Dogs must have taken the sign seriously because that is just what they did to a classy bunch from Crowley by the tune of 14-6. The ’Dogs delighted the Jennings followers with a highly potent offense and a ferocious defense. The first half was a rock 'em sock 'em brand of football with each team pushing the other up and down the field but failing to score. Key interceptions by Darrell Landry kept Crowley from hitting pay dirt, while penalties hurt the 'Dogs offensively. The third quarter was a repeat of the first half with the defense outplaying the offense, but in the initial part of the fourth quarter the Bulldogs started rolling with Billy Broussard barking signals. With scarely two minutes gone in the fourth period. Pooky Green cut inside, found daylight, and scampered 44 yards to pay dirt. However, the Gents were not to be denied and scored several plays later but missed the crucial PAT leaving Jennings with a slim 7-6 lead. In the fading seconds of the game the ’Dogs put icing on the cake , so to speak, and added another TD on Pooky Green's 4-yard plunge. Our 'Dogs Bite is Stronger It was Bulldog against Bulldog, a long way from home when Jennings journeyed to the banks of the Mississippi to chew up a first rate Ferriday team by the tally of 26-14. With scarcely one minute gone, Lee Manuel picked off an enemy pass and ran deep into Ferriday territory. Lightning struck when Pooky Green rambled 31 yards to pay dirt on the first play making it 6-0. A jittery Ferriday bunch fumbled and co-captain David Donald, a stalwart on the 'Dogs’ defense, recovered. The 'Dogs were unable to capitalize. Then Ricky Hebert saved the first of two sure Ferriday TD's by hauling down Ferriday's fullback from behind to end the first quarter. Co-captain Larry Daigle, playing tremendous defense, blocked a Ferriday punt, but penalties stopped the 'Dogs from scoring. Twice before the first half ended, Ferriday marched to the goal line but was stopped by a stonewall Jennings' defense. Lightning struck twice as Pooky Green scampered 64 yards on First play from scrimmage in the second half to make it 13-0. Ferriday was not to be denied as they marched upfield to put 7 points on the board at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter action became wild and wooly as Ferriday got into gear and scored with 8 minutes left making it 14-13 Ferriday. The sophomore combination of Billy Broussard and Johnny Savoy passed and ran Jennings to the Ferriday 31 where Pooky Green shot up the middle to the promised land to make it 19-14. Joel Richer! then added his second PAT making it 20-14. Ferriday's offensive machine cranked up and moved deep into Bulldog territory but was stopped cold when an alert Dick Lestage provided the heroics by picking off a Ferriday aerial. The 'Dogs shattered the Dragon defense scoring three times in the first quarter--once by land, once by air, and once by fumble. With 9 minutes left in the first quarter Pooky Green scooted up the middle 62 yards for six points. Joel Richert then added the first of 4 extra points. DeRidder coughed up the ball to Jennings then the 'Dogs marched 42 yards with John Savoy fumbling to Rod Breaux at the goal line for theunusualTD. Rod Breaux then intercepted a DeRidder aerial and two plays later co-captain Robert Segura connected with big end Steve Boyd for the 3rd Jennings touchdown of the quarter. The second quarter was more of a defensive struggle. The DeRidder quarterback hit on a long pass and went over two plays later for their lone TD. Darrell Landry grabbed a DeRidder punt on his own 49 and squirmed 51 yards to make the score 25-6 at the half. In the 2nd half, a series of passes to Billy Duncan and Harvey Campbell moved the ball downfield. Cocaptain Ricky Hebert found a hole and dashed 17 yards for the first of his two TD's. In the fading minutes of the 3rd quarter Ricky Hebert scored his second 6-pointer on a one-yard plunge padding the lead to 37-6. In the final 12 minutes of action Jennings drove down to the DeRidder goal where a pass was picked off by the DeRidder safety. The time - 7:30; the place - Bulldog Stadium; the scene - a battle of two ranked AA teams, the No. 1 ranked Wildcats from Lake Charles and the 10th ranked Bulldogs of Jennings High, the result - a hard fought 14-6 victory for the Lake Charles Wildcats. It was a well-played game and with a couple of more breaks the score could have easily been reversed. Lake Charles scored the first time they got the ball on a long run and a short TD plunge making it 7-0. The 'Dogs cranked up and penetrated to the Lake Charles 30 where they missed a first down by inches. Two alert defensive plays, a pass intercepted by Ricky Hebert and a fumble recovered by Bitsy Segura, killed two Wildcat drives as the first 12 minutes of play ended. In the second quarter the Wildcats punted, and the ball rolled down on the Jennings one. Two plays later Pooky Green flashed up the middle and rambled 94 yards for the 'Dogs TD. The PAT was missed making it 7-6 Wildcats as the teams retired to the dressing rooms. In the third period the teams traded punts and Lake Charles scored on a 2-yard run after the 'Dogs had held them 3 times at the two. This upped Lake Charles' lead to 14-6 as the fourth and final period of action began. The fourth quarter was a repeat of the 3rd quarter with neither team being able to get much of an attack going. On one Lake Charles drive Rod Breaux picked off an enemy pass on the 'Dog five yard killing another Lake Charles drive. The Bulldogs marched up to midfield where they were forced to punt as the clock ticked off the last 13 seconds of playing time. The win evened the 'Dogs' district record at 1-1 and made for a happy Homecoming that night. With 7:10 showing on the clock, Ricky Hebert scrambled around left end for six yards and the first 'Dog TD. After this drive both teams had a hard time moving and the first quarter come to an end with the 'Dogs leading 6-0. The second period of play was a wild and woolly defensive fray with Rod Breaux picking off an Oakdale aerial and returning it 15 yards. After trading punts the Bulldogs moved 27 yards to paydirt on a Segura to John Darbonne pass and a three-yard Darrell Landry plunge. After about five minutes of trading punts it seemed as if nobody wanted the ball as Oakdale intercepted a Bulldog bomb. Two plays later Dick Lestage picked off a Warrior aerial; and as the half ended, Oakdale picked off its second 'Dog pass. Following an attempted Warrior on-side kick, the 'Dogs cranked up and opened a gaping hole where OB Robert Segura scampered 42 yards with the pigskin for half a dozen more making the score 18-0 barely minutes into the third quarter. Oakdale punted and the 'Dogs moved downfield with the scrambling of Co-Captain Billy Broussard and the running of workhorse Pooky Green. Green went over to make it 24-0 as the horn sounded. The contest was a very exciting one with the outcome not decided until midway in the fourth quarter. Church Point received the kickoff but two plays later big Steve Boyd picked off a Bear pass and brought it to the Church Point 27. The 'Dogs fumbled away a golden opportunity to score on the Bear 16 yard line. The teams traded punts as the first quarter ended in a scoreless deadlock. The Bears kicked to open the second quarter and the fired up Canines marched 56 yards on the running of Pooky Green and Ricky Hebert with Green taking it over from the two-yard stripe, giving the 'Dogs a 7-0 lead with 8:12 left in the first half. The Bears showed some razzle dazzle in their offense, and took the ensuing kickoff and proceeded to ground out the necessary yardage for the TD making it 7-7 halfway through the second period. Neither team could sustain another scoring drive as the half ended 7-7. With 2:17 gone in the third quarter, Rod Breaux picked off a Bear aerial and wove his way 28 yards for the second Bulldog touchdown. Church Point threatened later in the quarter but the 'Dogs' defense rose to the occasion and Church Point kicked to begin the fourth and final quarter. A series of plays later a Bear back fumbled a punt return and David Donald fell on the ball. The 'Dogs took advantage of this error several plays later, as Billy Broussard tucked the pigskin in his hip pocket and sped away 8 yards for the TD. Joel Richert completed his perfect night by booting his third PAT through the uprights to make it 21-7 for Jennings. Suphfur, Lake Charles, and Westlake are all in Calcasieu and we have not beaten one of them this year. So the Bulldogs were unable to salvage more than a tie, leaving them with a 5-2-1 record going into the final two games of the regular season. Westlake won the toss and elected to receive. The Rams could not move and punted. Co-captain Darrell Landry gathered the punt and scooted 65 yards for a seemingly good TD but it was called back. The 'Dogs cranked up and marched downfield but couldn't crack the point column. This was pretty much the story of the entire first half with the 'Dogs traveling up and down the field between the twenty-yard stripes but once inside them the Rams’ defense lowered their horns and did not allow a score. Pooky Green and Ricky Hebert were the workhorses for the Bulldogs in the 'Dogs' first half offense while Larry Daigle, Dick Lestage, Steve Boyd, and Billy Moore garnered the defensive laurels of the first half by limiting the Rams to one first down. After a dog-eat-dog first half the 'Dogs and Rams traded punts and the action began. Westlake's haunted passing attack began to click and they moved down the gridiron to score their first TD of the evening making it 7-0 Rams. The 'Dogs' offense continued to have its problems in the third period as the fourth quarter rolled around. A recovered fumble on the Ram 38 set up the 'Dogs' tying touchdown as the 'Dog pack ground out 38 tough yards, with Pooky Green bulling his way over from the one-yard marker. Joel Richert's crucial PAT was good as he booted it right through the uprights making it 7-7. With all the cards on the table and a play-off berth at stake, Jennings and Eunice squared off in a do-or-die contest for both teams in the frosty atmosphere of Bulldog Stadium, Friday, November 3, 1967. The score? Well the J.H.S. fighting Bulldogs overcame a two TD deficit and went on to win by a weighty 26-13. It appeared that Eunice held all the aces as they took the kickoff and put seven points on the board five minutes later. The next time Eunice got the ball they scored Randal Fontenot again, making it 13-0 Eunice early in the second quarter. Jr. End The stunned 'Dogs took the Bobcat kickoff, showed their muscle, and moved 65 yards on the power running of Johnny Savoy and a 42-yard pass play from Billy Broussard to Ricky Hebert but were stymied on the Bobcat three-yard stripe. By this time Jennings fans were wondering if Jennings had any trumps to play or whether Eunice held them all on the cold, wind-whipped night. Jennings forced a Eunice punt and quickly traveled 47 yards for their first TD. The big play was a seventeen-yard touchdown completion from OB Billy Broussard to Darrell Landry. As the first half came to an end, the 'Dogs found themselves on the short end of a 13-6 score. The 'Dogs seemed to have found themselves during halftime as the passing began to click on passes to Johnny Darbonne, Landry, and even one where Broussard caught his own deflected pass for a ten-yard gain. On a fourth down and four situation Broussard showed great poise as he calmly rifled his second TD toss to Darrell Landry. Ricky Hebert then added his first PAT of the season, leaving the outcome of the game up for grabs. Rod Breaux quickly decided he would like the 'Dogs to win as he intercepted an enemy pass and carted the pigskin down to the Eunice thirty-yard stripe. To open the last minutes of excitement Billy Broussard hit Johnny Darbonne for another completion on the Bobcat fourteen-yard line. Two punches by Hebert and Johnny Savoy left the ball on the two-yard marker where Ricky Hebert plowed through the middle and kicked his second PAT, giving the 'Dogs the lead for the first time. With 2:08 remaining on the clock, Robert Segura ran back a punt 45 yards to the 'Dogs' ten-yard line. Four plays went by and hard running Hebert scored his second six points to pad the lead to the tune of 26-13. Bubba Clark Wayne Tate Above: This is far enough. 'Cat! is what versatile Robert Soph. Evidently the Jennings Bulldogs were looking ahead to their bi-district encounter with Pineville the following week, while the No. 1 ranked A team-the Notre Dame Pioneers-slipped up on the Bulldogs' blind side and gave the 'Dogs an old-fashioned pasting by the shocking score of 27-0. It was a rough night all the way around for the 'Dogs as they were unable to generate much of an offense and had trouble containing the potent offense of the Pioneers. Notre Dame-the St. Michael's part-remembering last year's licking at the hands of the Bulldogs (24-0) - scored in every quarter on land and by air. Several penalties incurred by some over-zealous tackling either bogged down the 'Dogs' offense or put Notre Dame nearer pay dirt. It was the general feeling of the crowd that the Bulldogs would rebound against the Pineville Rebels in Pineville the following weekend and time would tell. With a quarter-final berth in the state play-offs going to the winner, the Bulldogs eagerly packed their bags and invaded the city of Pineville to lock horns with the fifth-ranked Pineville Rebels in a bi-district encounter. The 'Dogs really put it to the Rebels by giving them a rebel-rousing to the count of 34-14. It was a combination of the potent offense, led by co-captain Pooky Green's four touchdowns, and a stingy 'Dog defense that held the Rebels scoreless the second half. The Bulldogs started out as always losing the toss to make it ABOVE: Exhausted after the hard-fought twelve for twelve CTLs (coin tosses lost) this year. Pineville was game, Rod Breaux could not even wait to forced to kick but scored on a fumble recovery from the Jennings get into the dressing room, twenty-one. On the first play from scrimmage, the offensive line opened up a tremendous hole off-tackle for Pooky Green, who rambled 68 yards to pay dirt. Ricky Hebert booted the PAT, making it 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Jennings defense barred its fangs by showing an airtight pass defense as they did for all but one play during the game and forced the Rebels to kick. From the Jennings 28, the fired-up canines traveled 72 yards in six minutes on good runs by Hebert, co-captain Darrell Landry and Green - Green then climaxed the drive with a four-yard plunge. Hebert's PAT was again good making it 14-7. Pineville then showed that it had class as it took them only a few plays to run and pass 64 yards for the TD, tying the score at fourteen apiece as the first half became history. In the early part of the second half the two teams found the going rough and punted. Jennings then drove sixty yards on a forty-yard jaunt by Pooky Green, eleven and three-yard skirts by Ricky Hebert and a five-yard scat by Mr. Green to the promised land. Joel Richert made his PAT count to make it 21-14 to end the third twelve minutes of exciting action. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs showed their heels to the Rebels by roaring upfield twice to put two more scores on the board. Thefirstwas a 21 yardscamper by - guess who? - PookyGreen, makingit27-14. Ricky Herbert continued his success at kicking by booting another perfect PAT with the scoreboard reading 9:20 left. But the Dogs were not through yet. With 4:53 remaining Billy Broussard faked into the line and tossed a 28-yard scoring aerial to end Billy Duncan who hedgehopped into everyone to leave the scoreboard reading Jennings 34 Pineville 14 as the gun sounded and the players carried the coaches off the field. They appeared to be alive and healthy as they and Jesuit's All-State quarterback proved to be a little too much for Jennings the night of November 24, 1967. The 'Dogs did an odd thing as they broke the coin-toss jinx on the thirteenth try of the season. Jennings took the opening kick-off and ground out yardage to the Jesuit fifteen but were stopped. Lightning struck as Jesuit scored on an 85-yard pass play to make it 7-0. The 'Dogs were stopped and Jesuit put six more on the board to make 13-0 with 11:54 remaining in the second quarter. Jennings’ defense stiffened and held the Blue Flyers the remainder of the half and put two points on the board for Jennings as Ricky Hebert pulled down the Jesuit end in the end zone on a Billy Broussard punt. In the second half Jennings gained momentum and scored on a 21-yard pass play action pass to make it 13-9 with 3:02 remaining in the third period of play. The touchdown was set-up by a 69-yard run of a pass interception by Ricky Hebert, one of his two, in the end zone. Jesuit displayed why they were ranked second in the state as they scored once in the third quarter and once in the fourth to make the final score 26-9 in favor of the Blue Flyers. Bright spots for Jennings were the magnificent pass defense by the 'Dogs after the first disastrous pass by allowing only one completion, intercepting three times and knocking down two others.
