After we have left J.H.S. and are looking back on our high school life, we will always remember certain people and events. Perhaps it will be that favorite teacher whom we met as a freshman, or maybe the janitors who opened the school for us when we -had forgotten our , English book, or perhaps, too, that teacher who scared us so muctt because his class was so hard, yet in the end we looked qpon him as a friend because he had gained our respect and helped us learn to study. Then, we wilL'always rememher the excitement of our first Homecoming Dance, the anticipation of Friday pep rallies,“the year the '66 seniors had two proms and a graduation that was almost rain' ed out. Yes, certain activities and people will stand out vividly in our minds. But more important than most of these activities-will- be the certain persons who because of their varying, opinions and personalities helped us mature and learn to get along with others. These people will always have a special place in our hearts and will be readily remembered. For this reason the theme of the 1966 BULLDOG'S GROWL is T ese Are Our People. Table of Contents The 1966 Yearbook staff is proud to dedicate THE 1966 BULLDOG’S GROWL TO Frank Barousse. Coach Barousse, as he is commonly called around J.H.S., has been a member of the Jennings High faculty for nine years. As a teacher, he ha's taught Algebra I and senior math. As a coach, he has coached football boys for nine years and has headed our track department for two years. Coach has been first assistant football coach for the past two years. Among the high school students as well as among the high school staff members, Coach Barousse has earned the respect as a quiet and determined man. Because he has worked hard and for many long hours with the athletic department as well as for the school, the yearbook staff feels that Coach Barousse is very deserving of this dedication. Because of his experience as a principal, coach, and teacher, his impartial decisions have not only endeared him to our hearts but also have written him as one of the greatest assets of our school. Some of the problems which he has had to face and pave the way for include club day, the frequency of the meetings and the effectiveness of the clubs; the increasing enrollment of our school, the feeding of the students in our small cafeteria, and scheduling the students, so many of whom are college bound. Besides working with these problems and their solutions, Mr. Simmons has always had time to talk individually with students. These accomplishments, traits, and his unselfishness have led us all to nourish an affection for him which leads us to say Thank you, and Best Wishes for a well deserved retirement. LEFT: Mr. Simmons and Mr. Brown discuss the effectiveness of debate and drama. RIGHT: Mrs. Evans, our school secretary, gives a check to Mr. Simmons for his approval. 10 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, SEATED: Mrs. Ethel Harris; Mr. J. C. After getting the articles, the news must be typed as it is to appear in the paper. The next step is to arrange the articles on the pages as if they were pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. One of the last phases is to paste the copy on the dummy and make sure it fits. Susan Peters and Peggy Parker are pasting the copy on the dummy as Mrs. Cormier looks on. 37 Susan Peters and Peggy Parker, the two co-editors of THE BULLDOG CHRONICAL, fit copy on a new edition as they compare it to the previous paper. Band Ends Season on an Excellent Note The Jennings High School Band has a two fold purpose: education, to teach students both the science of and the enjoyment of the art of music; utility, to add music and color school and civic sponsored events. Many long and arduous hours of work have gone into the welding of the Jennings High School Band into a cohesive musical unit that Jennings High is proud to call its own. The band participated in the Jennings Homecoming Parade, pep rallies, performed at eight football games, performed for the civic Christmas light fund raising program, in various civic sponsored parades, participated in the Natchitoches Annual Christmas parade and lighting ceremony and in the Lafayette Mardi Gras program. OFFICERS: Joy Hilbun, band captain; T. J. Richard, assistant drum major; Paul Leonard, first lieutenant; Sue Rine, second lieutenant; Mr. Myers, band director. The officers discuss plans for the band's trip to the Natchitoches Christmas Festival. The Jennings Band was among eighty marching units to participate in the Festival. 40 The band majorettes. Janice Moseley, on top; then Gale Janice, and head majorettes Sue Rine and Janie Richert contributed much to the success of the band's 1965 marching season. Each of the majorettes earned a superior rating at USL's twirling festival in 1965. The leadership and spirited dedication exhibited by our drum major, Joy Hilbun. was very instrumental in the continual progress of the Jennings High School Band. FIRST ROW: Joy Hilbun, Becky Wolfe. JOHN ADAMS Jr. End Dogs Avenge by Score of I 3 to 6 Since the Morgan City game had been called off because of Hurricane Betsy, this was to be the Bulldogs long awaited first game of the season. It proved to be a well deserved wait, for the Bulldogs won a 13-6 victory over the Crowley Gents. Crowley took the opening kickoff but was forced to punt. The Bulldogs got the ball on their own 18 yard line and moved 82 yards for a score on 11 plays. The final play was a 34 yard pass from Dwain Istre to Johnny Adams. Istre ran the extra point. Crowley took the kickoff and moved to the Jennings 36 yard line before they had to give up the ball on downs. The Bulldogs marched right down to score on a one yard quick-hitting play by fullback Kenny Goodreau. The extra point attempt failed. With 4:40 left in the game, Crowley recovered a Bulldog fumble on the Jennings' 30 yard line. A 15 yard penalty moved the ball to the 15 yard line and then Crowley connected for a scoring pass. The uppermost question in the minds of many people was whether this would be the fourth victory over the Bobcats. The Dogs received the kickoff, and 12 plays later Randy Keeth scampered around left end behind the blocking of big Ronnie Darb and John Lee to draw first blood for the Dogs. Jamie Jackson added the PAT. Eunice could not seem to puncture the Jennings’ defense or hold the Jennings' offense, for the Dogs again hit paydirt. Doyle Reeves, behind a great forward wall, carried over from the four and again from the one in the second quarter. Jackson added the PAT's. Dupre of Eunice finally connected with Young in the closing seconds of the half to make the score 21-7. The Jennings defense began the third quarter determined to stop any attempt for a comeback on Eunice's part. Although Eunice controlled the ball the third quarter, they could not dent the tough Jennings defense for a score. In the fourth quarter, Kenny Goodreau and Richard Theriot did the Jennings running with Goodreau putting the final touches on the 27-7 victory by making a 17 yard jaunt. ABOVE: Dogs lake a well deserved rest. Dogs Bait Bears The weather was mild. Fans packed the stands, and both teams seemed ready for the district football game between the Jennings Bulldogs and the Churchpoint Bears. The first quarter saw Doyle Reeves put six points on the scoreboard and Jamie Jackson add the PAT. Church-point’s only sustained drive was in the first quarter when they entered Jennings territory via aerial attack, but the tough Jennings defense, led by hard tackling Butch Poole, quenched the drive. In the second quarter, Dwain Istre scored on a six yard jaunt after Kenny Goodreau and Randy Keeth carried the ball into Bear territory. The third quarter consisted of a dazzling run by Kenny Goodreau as he wiggled his way through Churchpoint tacklers to score. Also in this period Richard Theriot took the ball 31 yards to hit paydirt for the Bulldogs. The fourth stanza saw David Marcantel score, piling up through the Bear line to climax the 33-0 victory for the Bulldogs. This was the big question as the Jennings Bulldogs faced the West Monroe Rebels. The Rebels held the Dogs on the first series of downs and the Dogs punted. The stout Jennings defense held firmly, and the Dogs again got possession to the ball. This time hard hitting Kenny Goodreau plowed through the line and sprinted for 60 yards. Dwain Istre hit paydirt two plays later. The Dogs' defense stiffened as Jonnye Vance and Richard Theriot with outstanding secondary play stymied the West Monroe passing attack. From then on the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Dwain Istre scored again in the second quarter and twice in the fourth quarter behind the acute blocking of Randy Keeth, Kenny Goodreau, and A. J. Hardy to finish the scoring for the night. The defense stopped a furious passing and running attack by the Rebels to put the game on ice 26-0. But the Dogs were stopped by the Bears' line and had to give up the ball on downs. The Bears struck in the second quarter by scoring six points. An interception of a Bear’s pass by Richard Theriot in the closing minutes of the half helped put the Dogs within striking range, but the clock ended hopes for a score before the half. During the first half, the Dogs sustained two key injuries that were keenly felt in the remaining games of the season. Chip Shirley broke both bones in his right arm, whereas Ken Goodreau suffered a badly sprained ankle. Though trailing 6-0 at the end of the half, the Dogs racked up a total of 132 yards on offense to the Bears' 41. In the third quarter, an 80 yard punt return and a 47 yard aerial bomb brought the score to 20-0 which remained that way until the sound of the gun. s✓ ABOVE: As Kenny Goodreau (31) and John Lee (40) clear the way, Randy Keeth (23) runs around the end. The next Bulldog score came with 5:30 left in the third quarter on a one yard plunge over right end by Dwain Istre. Jennings failed to complete either extra points. The Westlake Rams took the ball on the kickoff and drove to the Dog's half yard line, but the drive was stopped cold by the stout Dog defense. Jennings took possession of the ball; but two plays later, Dwain Istre was tripped up behind the goal; and the Rams went ahead by two points. On the last play of the first quarter, Richard Theriot intercepted a Ram pass on the Dog 15--Jennings was in business! The Dogs covered 85 yards in 18 plays with a 17 yard gallop by Richard Theriot and a 19 yard pass from Dwain Istre to Randy Keeth. Dwain Istre capped the drive with a three yard scamper around right end to score. The Rams initiated another drive before the end of the half, but it was stopped within the shadow of the goal by the Dogs on their own three. Dwain Istre extended the margin of victory on the third play of the second half with a spectacular 71 yard run to paydirt. Westlake managed to put one more score on the board in the last period, but it was matched by another touchdown that climaxed a 63 yard drive by the Dogs. A few plays later the Dogs fumbled, and this time DeRidder recovered and went on to score with 4:21 left in the quarter. They failed to make the PAT. Jennings roared back in the opening minutes of the second stanza with a touchdown pass from Dwain Istre to Randy Keeth. Jamie Jacksons’ PAT was good to make the score 13-11 with one minute left in the half. Jennings kicked off in the second half, and three plays later DeRidder scored. Jennings then advanced to DeRidder's 35 where a fumbled stopped the drive. In the fourth quarter, they drove to the 17 yard line of DeRidder but were halted. With only two minutes left in the game, the Dogs took possession of the ball. On the last play, Istre, according to the film and many of the fans, crossed the goal line, but the referees ruled that the Dogs did not score, and the game ended 20- DOG PILE! !! The coaches brief the boys on the second half plays. Oakdale Warriers Scalped The Jennings Bulldogs closed out a successful season by romping over the Oakdale Warriors by a score of 34-6. Jennings' first touchdown came after Ken Goodreau threw Oakdale's fullback for a 14 yard loss to their 29 on the fourth down. Five plays later, Dwain Istre plunged over right tackle to score, but his attempt for the PAT was wide. Within five minutes, Jennings scored again, and the PAT was good. With only thirty seconds left in the period, Jonnye Vance intercepted a pass on the Oakdale 35 and scrambled all the way for the score. Ken Goodreau's extra point was good. Oakdale managed to put their only score on the board in the second quarter. Their PAT attempt failed. Before the end of the frame, Istre tallied again from the four and kicked the extra point. In the third stanza, Butch Poole, showing brilliant defensive skill, set up the final Dog score by stopping a Warrior cold on the Dog 41. After eight plays, Istre scored with 1:54 left in the third period. In the final quarter, Terry Burger and Richard Theriot intercepted two passes to end any hopes that Oakdale had of ever scoring. Almost every weekday afternoon, a familiar sight, as one passes the school ground, is that of the football squad out practicing. 70 To keep in good physical condition, football boys that do not participate in track lift weights. During an afternoon of fundamental practice, the linemen work on blocking. Spring Practice The boys are practicing hitting the sled under Coach Hudson's supervision. Coach Bob Hudson interrupts a practice session to point out a few plays to the boys. These Are The Seniors of 1966 For four years the seniors of '66 have become good friends and have shared many experiences. Many of these experiences and friendships go back to the freshman year of '63 when the class naturally drew closer because of the similar problems of locks, lockers, new teachers, and a big, confusing school. As the years hurried by, new problems confronted the class, and the friendships became deeper. Then that beautiful day of commence- ment arrived. The seniors realized that the shared memories were to end, and they were to part. With these memories in mind, the '66 seniors leave J.H.S. to go their separate ways. They take countless memories of their four years in high school. Above all, they leave J.H.S. with the assurance of being well-prepared to face the future. One of the first activities of the year was Homecoming. BACK ROW: Russell Babineaux, Kenny Kennedy, and Susan Peters. 160 in Last Year of High School Life With the announcement that there was to be a special class meeting to order invitations, the seniors finally realized that they would soon be the ones in caps and gowns. A committee had met at 7:30 to select a few styles of invitations to be voted on by the class. LEFT: Wednesday night at T-Boy Arnaudet's house, the night before the Homecoming Parade, by 10:00 P.M. the seniors had decorated half of the car and the trunk. RIGHT: At 3:45 P.M. Thursday, the seniors put the last flower on the car. This combined effort of work and play produced the winning class car in the Homecoming Parade. BELOW: The new officers of pep squad, elected during the last meeting of the year, decided to hold a going out” initiation for the seniors. This kan-kan was enjoyed as much by the dancers as it was by the rest of the Bulldettes. On Career Day, Terry Burger remained after a lecture to talk with Archie Fontenot about the advantages of becoming an X-ray technologist. 161 Juniors Must Junior class officers elected for the year 1965-66 are: David Marcantel, president; Paul Leonard, vice-president; Betty Ann Hoag, secretary; and Connie Pizzolatto, treasurer. A good class needs good leaders. The Junior Class officers of 1965-66 proved to be just that. They skillfully guided their classmates through decision after decision. One of their money-making projects included the benefit barbeque, held on January 16. Planning and carrying out these projects required hard work. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom summed up their combined efforts. The Junior class met at Linda Hanks’ house on Wednesday, November 3, the eve of the homecoming parade, in order to add the finishing touches to their car. A very important phase of decorating a car is making the flowers and deciding upon a theme for the car. This year the juniors made a miniature wishing well to support their theme, Drown the Dragons. It was heartily agreed that the car reflected the juniors' hard work. 162 Face a Big Responsibility Ouida Abel John Adams Flo Arceneaux Linda Ardoin Bill Bearden Velma Benoit Phyllis Berlinger Gerald Bertrand Sharon Billodeaux Sidney Bowman Kirk Briggs Barbara Broussard Christine Broussard Donald Broussard Yvette Broussard Joyce Butson Gary Caldwell Gus Catsulis 163 Excitement Increases as End of School and Charlene Clemons Marian Clement Margaret Coles Brenda Comeaux Carol Cormier Donna Cormier James Cormier Steve Cormier Sylvia Darbonne Robert Dasch Sharon Davis Working at their study hall table, juniors, Paula Menard, Ray Lavergne, and Richard Ingalls, make last minute preparations for their next class and then start on the next day's assignments. 164 Arrival of Class Rings Approach Juanita Deaville Louella Deshotel Inquiring about different kinds of class rings is a part of every student's junior year. Spirited Sophomores Excel in Academics The sophomore officers for the 1965-66 school year are Daryl Newman, president; Darrell Landry, vice-president; and Becky Berkeley, secretary-treasurer. The sophomores returned to J.H.S. with much assurance. They have grown accustomed to the hectic life of a high school student which confronted them as freshmen. The whirlwind of freshman activities are pleasant memories, and their junior and senior years are eagerly awaited. The sophomore class president, Daryl Newman, wears the spirit jersey the sophs won at the first Homecoming pep rally while he talks with Drue Seefeld and David LeGros. 174 and in Extracurricular Activities Ww aOiM Charlotte Albright Linda Tyrone Arceneaux Armenter Diana Linda Brenda Babineaux Baker Benoit fit James Benoit Ronald Becky Benoit Berkeley Jo Anne Glen Mike Berlinger Bertrand Bertrand David Judy Rod Breaux Breaux Breaux Julie Bowers Betty Breaux Bethel Boudreaux Sherry Broussard Butch Brunt Martha Buller Susan Harvey John Burger Campbell Canik Determined Sophomores Face Remaining Alvin Daigle Don Daigle John Pat Danny Darbonne Deaville Delome David Donald Oran Doucet Saundra Duhon Don Louis Philip Deshotel Deshotel Devall Betty Dupont Chris Dupont Sandra Dupont Wayne Dupre Lois Evans Carolyn Fontenot Laurice Gloria Roger Fontenot Fruge Fontenot Glenn Stephanie Ted Gary Gary Gary Every year a few sophomore boys are voted into Key Club. Laura Trahan, Janice Moseley, and Delores Hilbun, a few band students, play along with the rest of the group as they rehearse for festival. 181 Yes, again J.H.S. sees new faces. They are typical freshmen in their astonishment and bewilderment in the confusing halls of J.H.S. Freshmen face all the exciting activities of high school life. Yet, they must also realize that these next years of their lives must mold their characters into the men and women of the world. They may be only freshmen, but already they are beginning to think about their future years in high school. Freshmen OFFICERS: Penny Williams, vice-president; Theresa Richert, presi' dent; Rhonda Holston, secretary. After the freshmen have adjusted to the new routine, one of the first things they learn is the importance of their lunch hour. On any day at noon, you can find practically any freshman boy in the north part of the building with his friends.
