’64 GROWL La. Volume XVIII 3 Table of Contents Index ... 199 Advertising 1964 Dedication Mrs. Jeanette Gaudet, who came to JHS eleven years ago, has given untiringly of her time to help in any and every phase of the school life at JHS. Mrs. Gaudet has served as girls' basketball coach, tennis coach, sponsor of the Junior Class, pep squad, and cheerleaders. During the eleven years she has taught physical education at JHS, she has found time to be not only a wonderful teacher but also a true and heartwarming friend. The 1964 yearbook staff Is very proud to dedicate to her, with our deepest thanks for her inspiration and guidance, the 1964 Bulldog’s Growl. MRS. LOU GAUDET Mrs. Gaudet referees one of the many games that her PE classes compete in throughout the year. All athletic events are a part of the life of Mrs. Gaudet. She is shown presenting the basketball awards to Judy Brantley and Alison Clemons. As school begins. atJ.H.S., students hurry(?) down the hall as the 8:20 bell rings and the school day begins. Administration Effectively Mr. Simmons, our principal, is the headstone of our school. Whenever he is needed, he is there to lend a helping hand. Whenever trouble arises, he will lend an ear to every side of the situation. To every student he has given expert advice when it was needed. He is always around when someone needs to unload his troubles. As every student knows, Mr. Simmons gives much more than is expected of him. If there is anyone who works beyond the call of duty, it is Mr. Simmons. He thinks of the entire student body as a whole, and not just the individual. Under his stern direction, Jennings High School has run like clock-work for twenty years. The school could not run without him, and it could not be run more efficiently unless there were two of him. To him the students of JHS offer a special thank you. Headed by Mr. Simmons Coach Eddie Harleson, on whose shoulders many important responsibilities are placed, is the assistant principal at JHS. Coach is truly an asset to Jennings High. Mrs. Helen Evans, our very capable office secretary, is always on hand to render help in any way she can to student and teacher alike. At one time or another every-student must get an admit from the office for his absence. Coach Harleson is issuing admits to Sandra Prather and Marilyn Miller. SEATED: MRS. Ed. , M.S.; LSU Mr. Craig’s office, Room 15, is a very busy place as the end of a school year approaches. Juniors, sophomores, freshmen, and eighth graders eagerly tend to their next year’s schedules. Mr. Craig will be busy setting up classes once these schedules are made up. Mr. Craig’s career files help many seniors make wise decisions as to the type of work they will do. A senior's time is often spent in Mr. Craig’s office. After seniors take the senior aptitude test, Mr. Craig grades them and students see him for the results. He also helps them decide which college is best suited for the courses they wish to study. 15 Maintenance The maintenance department at JHS is a very important phase of our high school. The bus drivers faithfully transport approximately 597 students through good and bad weather to JHS. Our cafeteria workers have a tremendous job of feeding 379 students daily. Our janitors help the school in numerous ways. They are always ready to render any service needed. 'Should we paint the flag pole? Another problem for our busy janitors. Mr. Merven Doucet, Mr. Wallace Roy, Mr. Eli Miller. Bringing children from surrounding rural homes to school is the task of the bus drivers. O. J. Le-Jeune, Cortez Manuel, Claude Manuel, Claude Lejeune, Oran Smith and Howard Mier. Our cafeteria ladies. Mrs. Lucille Roy, Mrs. Maggie Monic, Mrs. Gladys Dupuis, Mrs. Luma Guilliot, Mrs. Vernice Peloquin. 16 Departments Agriculture - 18 Drivers Education - 30 The departments of Jennings High School form the roots of knowledge that formulate leaves of wisdom in its students. These roots are formed by a variety of courses and curriculum which help to prepare the student for later challenges and goals to be conquered in life. Agriculture and MR. M. E. BLANCHARD B.S. . LSU Freshmen ag. boys take the teasing and do the dirty work. Here they are studying the things every farmer should know. An efficient, self-sustaining farmer needs to know many of the fine arts besides how to plant and harvest a good crop. These boys are learning how to weld various types of farm implements. Agriculture I Agriculture II Agriculture III Agriculture IV What would an agricultural class be without a garden? It could easily be compared to a typing class without typewriters. The truck garden enables the boys to learn not only about their crops but also about caring for machinery. 18 Commerce Prepare Students for a Career MISS HELEN CHEATWOOD B. S. , Northwestern Typing I Office Practice Shorthand MR. ANTOINE VALDETERO Bookkeeping B. A. , Northwestern Ready —TYPE! and Miss Cheatwood's Typing I class begins another time test. Miss Cheatwood's industrious shorthand students will in time become efficient secretaries. Bookkeeping Students in Mr. Valdetero’s class balance their chances for a more successful business career. English and MRS. JERRY SIMMONS B. A. , McNeese English I MRS. A. J. CORMIER B. A. , McNeese English I MR. ALBERT KENNARD B. S. . Georgetown University M. Ed. , Xavier University English II-III In English II, Mrs. Carter's students further their knowledge of the good of literature. One of the most important literary pieces they will read is William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. MRS. MARY LOUISE CARTER B. A. , USL English I-II MRS. MARJORIE KEETH B. S. , La. College English III-IV The English IV class, famous for Macbeth and research papers, is made interesting every day by Mrs. Keeth's diversified talents, which include a superlative knowledge of English grammar and the ability to make a dull literature course seem as interesting as MUTINY on the Mr. Kennard's English III class pays close attention as he explains more of the fundamentals of the English language. BOUNTY. French . . . Languages of the South MR. HERMAN VIDRINE B. A. . USL Civics French I French II During the silent minutes between classes Mr. Vidrine prepares for his next French class. The equipment in the French room helps students to speak the language more fluently. Students of French always enjoy the hours spent listening to French records and talking into the microphones. This equipment has made a big difference in French class. Nous parlons Francais bien! French words such as these are frequently heard in the JHS halls as French students show off their new talents. Music and MR. FRANK RICARD B. A. , McNeese Chorus MR. ERNEST LAPEYROUSE B. M. , Ed. , Louisiana College Band The girl's ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Ricard has sung at Christmas and Spring Concerts. They are: Gail Laughlin, Harriet McLean, Lee Thibodeaux, Danna Fannon, Joyce But-son, Jackie Hildebrand, Charlene Clemons, Harriet Shultz, Marlene Firestone, and Jackie Prather. ■ .- A First hour every morning one can find our band practicing diligently for our football games and concerts. The great job they did this past season has proved rewarding. Library . . . Important Assets of Our School The peace and quiet in the library aids students in studying for tests, mid-term exams, or just reading one of the fascinating books that can be found on the library shelves. The film that Mr. Sarradet is showing will help students to find reference books or novels much more easily. Mr. Sarradet spends a great deal of his time in the little office at one end of the library. Although he often seems very busy, he is happy to give any assistance a student might need. 23 Math MR. LEON RINE B. S. , M. Ed.; USL. MISS BARBARA ROMERO COACH FRANK BAROUSSE LSU; Trigonometry; Analysis; Algebra II; Plane Geometry. B. S. , McNeese Algebra II General Math B. S. , McNeese Algebra I Senior Math Confused geometry students working on the board receive assistance from Mr. Janice. The ancient course of math is still being pondered by 20th century students here in Miss Romero's Algebra I class. Interested Algebra II students watch attentively as Mr. Rine shows them how to do graphs. Mr. Rine also teaches trigonometry and analysis to seniors. and Science . . . Leaders of the Future MRS. DORIS TIEJE B. S. , La. Tech. Biology MR. SHELDON SIMMONS B. S. , La. College Physics, Chemistry MR. HENRY JANICE B.S. , U.S.L. Gen. Science COACH RALPH McKINSTRY B. S. , La. Tech, Gen. Science MRS. PERKINS CLIFFORD B.S. , Northwestern State Biology, Gen. Science Students of Coach McKinstry's general science class (shown above) are seen demonstrating the use of the telegraph. Chemistry and physics are sciences which most juniors and seniors schedule They are important studies for all who plan to attend college. Seeing is believing, for students, as some time is spent in the lab under the direction of Mr. Sheldon Simmons. Biology class under Mrs. Tieje consists not only of active class participation, but also of the taking of accurate notes from lectures. 25 Speech, Dramatics and MR. JERRY BROWN B. A. , McNeese Northwestern Speech I Speech n Choral reading is a very important phase of speech. Mr. Brown is shown directing one of the many practice sessions of the JHS Verse Choir. Mr. Brown, Therese Bowers, Lynn Daigle, Jane and Jean Necessary, and Connie Pizzolatto get out their brooms to give The Shack a good scrubbing down. Speech students become frequent visitors to The Shack for this is where most of the props are stored. Giving speeches is one of the numerous exercises a Speech I student has to master. Social Studies Make Better Citizens MRS. MAMIE LONGMAN B. A. , Texas University Civics American History MR. FRANCIS BENEDICT B. A. , B. D. , M. Ed. , USL COACH JAMES STUBBS B. S. , McNeese World Geography MR. HERMAN VIDRINE B. A.; USL Civics MR. ANTOINE VALDETERO B. A. , USL Civics Civics French I General History French II Mr. Benedict, grading some test papers, seems to find some of the answers amusing and puzzling. In one of Mrs. Longman's American history classes, Gary Duhon gives a very inspiring communism report. This is just one of the many things required of American history students. Home Economics and MRS. HELEN WILSON B.S. . M. Ed.; USL; LSU Home Ec. I MRS. ANN BELAIRE B.S. , USL Home Ec. I Home Ec. II Home Ec. Ill MRS. PERKINS CLIFFORD B.S., Northwestern Home Ec. I Mrs. Wilson shows the Freshman girls slides to help them broaden their horizons in Home Economics I. Home Economics II helps girls learn the basics that they will need for being homemakers in the future. The senior girls took time out of their fifth period classes one day to vie for the Betty Crocker home-maker of Tomorrow. Here we see the girls taking the test in the J. H. S. cafeteria. Jane Leonard is our Miss Betty Crocker of 1964. 28 Physical Education . . . Classes With Action COACH JAMES COACH EDDIE STUBBS HARELSON B. S. , McNeese B. S., M. Ed.; La. Boys' Phys. Ed. Tech. , L. S.U. Boys' Phys. Ed. MRS. LOU GAUDET B.S., U.S.L. Girls' Phys. Ed. Pictured above are the basketball activities in which both the girls and boys partake during basketball season. At left, the girls are shown in a warm-up exercise before actual playing begins and at right the boys take position for a jump ball. Warm-up exercises begin each class. These exercises help the student to perform better in the activities which include baseball, volleyball, and tumbling. Driver Education MR. JAMES WILSON B. S. , M. Ed. . U.S. L. Driver Education Keep your eyes on the road” is a very important slogan for classroom and actual driving work. Above Mr. Wilson gives last minute instructions to a student. At left, a driving class is pictured before it takes off for real driving experience. Each year the cars used in the Driver Education program are donated by Bubba Oustalet. The long white trailer which appeared on the JHS campus about February was purchased by the School Board to aid driver education students of Jeff Davis Parish. A part of the class is now spent in the simulator. 30 Special Education Pictured here from left to right are: ROW 1: Richard Jeanise, Darryl Gary, Elaine Landry. Although the first game of the season was in Morgan City, nearly 800 fans from Jennings attended the game and saw the Bulldogs romp the Tigers in a 20-7 victory. After an exchange of punts during the beginning of the first quarter, the Dogs hit paydirt with a touchdown and an extra point. The only other score in the first half came in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Jennings scored again making the half time score 13-0. The second half saw the Tigers bounce back with a quick touchdown, hoping to even the score. All their hopes for a tie were lost, however, when Jennings scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter, leaving the game with their first victory of the season. 152 Jennings..........79 Cro wley...........9 The second game of the season saw Jennings at Crowley in an always-tough non-district contest. The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff, and it was only minutes before the scoreboard read 7-0 in favor of Jennings. In the second quarter, another touchdown was scored by the Dogs, making the score 13-0 at the half. Jennings kicked off to Crowley in the second half, but the Dogs had the ball within a few minutes. This was to no avail for on the next play the ball was fumbled behind the Jennings goal. Although Jennings recovered the ball, a Gent was also on the pigskin giving them a safety and two points. Just before the fourth quarter ended, Jennings came through with another touchdown and the extra point. Not until ten seconds before the end of the game was Crowley able to score their only TD of the night. The 19-9 win gave the Dogs their second victory. The bulldogs received the kickoff, but they had to kick after four downs. Eunice, finding the going rough on the ground, decided to take to the air. This proved fatal when Glenn Miller picked off a Bobcat pass and raced for a TD. It was only a matter of seconds before Eunice scored a touchdown and made the extra point. Jennings and Eunice scored again, making the half-time score 14-13 in Eunice's favor. It wasn't until the fourth quarter that the Dogs scored again. Eunice fought all the way back to the Dog's one foot line. Here, with only a few remaining seconds, the hard-hitting Bulldogs made a Eunice Bobcat cough up the ball just before the game ended. Jennings now had its third straight victory with the final score 19-14. 154 Jennings..........28 Lee High..........14 JENNINGS OVERPOWERS LEE HIGH The fourth game of the season found the Bulldogs in Baton Rouge to play Lee High. In the beginning of the first period, it looked as if both teams were evenly matched as the ball changed hands several times. Finally late in the first quarter, the Dogs hit pay dirt only to have the Rebels bounce back in the second quarter to tie the half time score 7-7. Not long after the kick-off of the second half, Jennings scored again and once more made the extra point. It was early in the final period before Lee could push across another touchdown, making the game a 14-14 deadlock. Then with only minutes to go, the Dogs scored twice - once on an end sweep and the other on an intercepted pass runback. This gave Jennings the game and their fourth straight victory. The conversion was missed and the Dogs led 6-0. During the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored two more times, the first on an intercepted pass and the second on a Wolfe-to-Pizzolatto pass making the score at the end of the half 19-0. In the third period, another Eagle pass was intercepted and Jennings scored their fourth TD of the game. The last score of the game came in the closing minutes of play as the Dogs scored on a short two yard plunge by the fullback. The second quarter saw more of Jennings' scoring power with drives of 45 and 35 yards respectively. At the half, the score stood Jennings 28, Ville Platte 0. It was all Jennings from the start. The first touchdown of the game came on a pass play. The next two were on fullback plunges and the fourth was on an intercepted pass runback. Just before the half ended, Lake Charles made their first and only touchdown of the game. Although Lake Charles was three touchdowns behind the Bulldogs, the Dogs seemed to be maddened by the Lake Charles touchdown. Burgess Our queen and her court to whom the night of November 1, 1963, will always be a very special and significant event to remember. These girls shared a wonderful experience - an experience which they themselves find hard to explain. Homecoming at J. H.S. was held on November 1, 1963, with the Class of 1953 as the honored guests. After a week of parades, pep rallies, bon fires, snake dances, and a wonderful display of school spirit, the festivities reached a climax with the crowning of the queen and her court. As the band played Let Me Call You Sweetheart and the pep squad formed a large heart, each member of the court was presented to the student body and public. The court forms a beautiful picture on homecoming night. On the front at left is Miss Judy Brantley, 1962 queen. Her escort for the evening was Mr. W. F. Brantley.
