As the present becomes the past, these memories come alive again in the slowly turning pages of the yearbook. The 1961 edition of THE BULLDOG'S GROWL features not only our high school but also our city, Jennings, Louisiana, often referred to as the city of trees and churches, evinces the deep pulse which has turned it from a railroad stop into a blossoming community of more than 12,000 inhabitants. ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS Page 132 ORGANIZATIONS ADVERTISERS many advantages combine to serve each citizen in the best way possible. It is our sincere hope that as you, the reader, turn these pages and bring alive these memories, you will share with us the desire to become a vital part of this great pulse! 3 Dedication Miss June Shultz, who received her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, has been an active member of the Jennings High School faculty for the past four and one-half years. During that time, she has given the better part of every day to the school and to the students. Miss Shultz was sponsor of the school newspaper for two years, and she has worked untiringly with the Pep Squad for the past three years. In the school year 1958-1959, she received thejaycees' OUTSTANDING YOUNG TEACHER award for her efforts. Therefore we proudly dedicate this, THE BULLDOG'S GROWL of 1961, to Miss Shultz, our teacher and our friend. One can clearly distinguish such familiar sights as Jennings High School, the football stadium, the Old Spanish Trail, the Pelican Drive-Inn Theatre, and the American Legion Hospital. Many of the values your school has tried to impart become increasingly more important. As you take your place in the world, remember that the most vital component part of democracy is human relations - respecting the dignity and the integrity of the individual and the group. ED. Mrs. Luke Richard and Mr. Boudreaux, Student Council sponsors, plan Career Day. This year a guidance program was initiated at Jennings High School under the coordination of Claude Boudreaux, Counselor. The counselor is in charge of administering and interpreting the results of standardized tests and providing occupational and educational information to students. He is available for private interviews with students to discuss future vocational and educational plans, desired schedule changes, study habits, and any other problems that a student might wish to talk over with someone. A Career File” has been established in the library, containing readily accessible information about many different occupations. The above rack contains career pamphlets and brochures. English I English II MR. JAMES GRANGER, B. A. English I French I French II English . . . In the English department, much emphasis is put on writing as a form of self expression. Above, Mrs. Keeth demonstrates iambic pentameter to her junior English classes. In Miss Shultz's sophomore English class, students listen and take notes from recordings of Shakespeare’s JULUIS CAESAR, which they take as part of their yearly curriculum. Senior English students study MACBETH and other classics. Good reading is encouraged throughout the English department. ------------------ Foreign Language Mr. Granger, Miss Shultz, Mrs. Keeth, and Mrs. Cushing try to decide who will represent the English department at the literary rallies. These freshman English students examine the exhibit Short, Short Stories and look over stories which were written by their classmates. At left, the French II class listens to an interpretive reading. The French classes have been very active this year in promoting a knowledge and interest of French at Jennings High. At right, the French I class takes dictation. Classes are conducted in the new language laboratory, which was partially paid for by the United States Government in an effort to promote foreign languages in secondary schools. 15 MR. General Science Mr. Burger explains the properties of acids to Julo Theunissen and Everett Stackhouse in chemistry. Besides studying theory and principles, a certain amount of the student's time is spent in practical applications, such as demonstrations and experiments. FRANCIS BENEDICT, B. A. Civics General History MR. GEORGE HANKS, B.S. World Geography A new course, Communism vs. Americanism, has been correlated with the American history course at Jennings High School. (Above) Students are viewing a film strip 'Communism on the Map which tells of the subversive effects of communist influence throughout the world. Mr. Benedict lectures to his civics class on the agencies of justice and law in the United States. Mr. Hanks explores with his world geography class the wonders of the globe and our world. 18 Speech and Dramatics MRS. L. H. RICHARD, B.A. Speech I Speech II Today, more than ever before, man needs the ability to communicate with his fellow man. The Jennings High School speech department endeavors to develop and refine this ability. Many skills are taught: prepared speaking, extemporaneous speaking, interpretive reading, choral reading, dramatic skills (play production, acting, and so forth) and others. The first period Speech II class practices a one act play to be given before the student body. Mrs. Richard’s fourth period Speech I class puts on a discussion panel. Mrs. Richard conducts tryouts for one of the annual plays. 19 Above, Mrs. Richard and Mr. Ricard are collaborating on the Spring Production. The Jennings High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Sarra-det, performs at football games, town parades, and such out-of-town events as L.S. U. Band Day. At right, Mr. Ricard directs the Jennings High School eighth grade chorus. During each school day he also directs the high school mixed chorus, the high school men's chorus, and the high school women's chorus. 20 J Library MISS JOSEPHINE TAUZIN B.A., B.A. Our library offers students the latest research books, up-to-date publications, and classics of all eras. In the library students may also find many different types of novels. Miss Tauzin, our librarian, is always hard at work bettering our library. She can be found in her office from 8:00 A.M. until 4:00 P. M. almost everyday of the week. Library Club members help Miss Tauzin in various ways. They check books out and in, keep tabs on magazines, and shelve books. 21 Commerce MISS FERN HIMLER, B.A., M.A. At right, Miss Himler's students learn the latest methods of bookkeeping At left, students are practicing their shorthand. Shorthand aids students in all fields of work and prepares them for the business world in fields of commerce. In typing, at right, students are improving their ability to type well. Practice makes perfect, and the students try every day to increase their speed and accuracy. 22 Tantalizing smells are always coming from the cooking department, where students learn to prepare various dishes which are not only wholesome but also appetizing and attractive. In the morning and afternoon, the home economics lounge is open to all faculty members; and coffee and pastries are served. Another service this department renders to the school is the holding of receptions after P.T.A. meetings and other school functions. In the sewing department students learn the basic fundamentals of dressmaking. They learn how to select fabric, interpret patterns, make their dresses, fit and finish them. Physical Education Left: the first hour boys' physical education class lift weights under the supervision of Coach Harelson. The year's program is coordinated so that both the boys and girls are introduced to a variety of sports, including football, basketball, track, weight lifting, tumbling, volleyball, and others. Realizing that a healthy body makes for a healthy mind, the P.E. program is set up in order to give each student a maximum amount of participation. Physical Education - X7 t ' 24 Courses in agriculture are offered to Jennings High School boys throughout high school. In them one learns the principles of agriculture, maintenance of farm implements, craftsmanship, and good citizenship. One also learns how to run a farm. Agriculture MR. M. E. BLANCHARD, B.S. The above picture shows some of the agriculture students planting potatoes at the agricultural farm. At right other students study the basic principles of cattle judging. At left, at the truck farm, students plow and make ready the garden for crop planting. 25 At left the boys are employing their skills at woodworking. At right they practice counting by selling and buying groceries. Many valuable educational lessons are learned from this group's literary and manual training. At left, we see the group gathered around the piano with their teacher Mrs. Firestone in a song fest. In the art department, students are taught the value of drawing and painting as forms of self-expression. The above pictures show students drawing and painting with tempera colors. This is just one of the many useful skills learned in our drivers education course. MR. JAMES WILSON, B.S., M. Ed. Drivers Education The bulletin board in the drivers education room is continuously filled with posters, articles, and other displays which broaden the students' understanding of driving and safety with the automobile. Approximately one third of this course is spent in theory, in learning road signs, hand signals and the like.
