I I THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1960 OF JENNER BOSWELL JENNERSTOWN JOINT HIGH SCHOOL BOSWELL, PENNSYLVANIA Jnlnewnfwl Our book, this 1960 issue of the REX COL- LIUM, takes its place alongside the chain of books that have marked the development of Jenner-Boswell-Iennerstown Joint High School. It is the story of another year, a great year, es- pecially, it is the story of our years at I.B.J. This edition of the REX COLLIUM is the story in pictures of how the class of N609 spent its school days. The pictures in our album help to capture some of the events of significance and help to show how education came to mean so much to each member of our class. School at times seemed a little difficult, but with activities available to the students, it seemed to lighten the load that we sometimes had. This REX COLLIUM also shows what we have accomplished thus far as a group. The close of this year will bring on a new aspect of life for all seniors. You might say we stand on the thres- hold to the future. High school will be ended and college or a job lie ahead. ln the future every- thing we do will have to be done as an individual. Our memories of school years will include much of the tradition of Boswell High, but they will also reflect our eager interest in the new and the progressive. We, the seniors of the class of 1960, dedicate this REX COLLLUM to all underclassmen with the hope that they have as many successful ad- ventures at LBJ. as we have enjoyed. ease -:1. , 2ei2i2E1 f if ' all Numa? Leslie Simpson Old fashioned protographs! We hardly Want to go back to them. Old fashioned schools! VVe hardly Want to go back to them, either. Yet, We need to remember that the basic means and purposes of modern photo- graphy differ little from the old fashioned kind -a chemical reaction to produce a clear, natural image of the subject. Likewise the basic means and purpose of the modern school differs little from that of the old-a student-teacher reaction to produce a picture of what the individual student really is and needs to be. Sometimes the basic purpose of photo- graphy gets lost in touch-up, tinting, and glamorous frame. So too, there is a tendency for the basic purpose of education to become secondary to extra-curricular activities and striving for non-scholastic prestige. The old fashioned purpose of education has not gone out of style, individual excellence in scholar- ship is still the high road to the future. Mr. Iames B. Dietz To the class of 1960 Every gift is an opportunity and an obli- gation. Intelligence is given for a purpose. There is joy in its use. Through exercise the mind grows strong, through disuse, Weak. In proportion to your gifts, you have a moral ob- ligation to be intelligent, to use your mind constantly for the improvement of your daily life. Congratulations upon your graduation from and my best Wishes for success. H. Leslie Simpson Mr. james B. Dietz mgnmm lam nf, policiaa, and fmwfwlzt. Dr. Simpson, as Supervising Principal of our schools, has a genuine interest in the expansion of our school facilities and the betterment of the educational program at Mr. Dietz, our principal, makes himself available to all the problems of the students of our schools. His helpfulness and un- derstanding make him a boon to the Whole school. Our s c h o o l secretaries are very often not given credit for the amount of work they do for the students at J.B.J. It would be very diilicult indeed for us to en- joy as smooth running a school as ours Without their help. Miss D. Sheftic and Miss D. Griffith Mrs. Nl. 'llliomus and Nliss AI. Lohr, R. Orlandi, M. Griffith. Klum' VVe, the seniors of LBJ., look back at our former years in school, years more like a play with four acts representing our four years in high school. The actors and actresses are the graduating class of 1960 and the setting is J.B.j. High School. Act 1. As the curtain begins to ascend we see the class officers of the ninth grade -D i a n e Cowarty, William Walker, Marie McGuire, and Joe Hoffman-lead ing our somewhat frightened classmates into what appears to be a huge mystical building, the high school building. This year saw our class begin to make its mark in the sports field with boys participating in football, basketball, and track. Also the girls made their contribution by add- ing pep and school spirit to the cheering squad. We also took part in the finer arts with Iunior Band members moving up to the Senior Band. Act II. This year we are really becom- ing active in school affairs, with our class beginning to make a name for itself. We again choose able leaders, Eugene Chappell, Patty Evans, josephine Trella, and Rick Orlandi. The annual football dance was our big money making project. We also sponsored. a skating party at Latrobe Skating Rink. During this act we hear chorus music, why itis the voices of our new chorus members. This year we picked our courses according to what we wanted our future to hold for us. Who knows? We may have future doctors, lawyers, dentists, nurses, teachers, store keepers, farmers, house- wives, and perhaps even a future president in our class. Act III. We may now consider ourselves upperclassmen because we have only our Jun- ior and Senior years to finish before we gradu- ate. This year will hold many happy memories of the activities in which we participated. The prom, 'gOriental Cardensf was the classis most beautiful project and happy memory. Our selling ability was tested when the class sold magazines. We also showed our writing and speaking ability with six of our class- mates entering the Voice of Democracyi' contest. On the football field we see leading our band four new majorettes from our class, they certainly can march and twirl. This year our crusading oflicers were Maxine Griffith, Eugene Chappell, Helen Stern, and Kathy Lohr. Our acting ability was demonstrated when we presented the junior class play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Act IV. The last exciting act which will be filled with our happiest and our saddest memories now begins. There is confusion, excitement, and happiness with the receiving of rings, pictures, and name cards. Our beauty and talent contestant in the Maple Queen Con- test was Lana Reinholtz. Again this year we had a successful class play,,Time Out for Gin- ger. With the classis upmost goal of becoming the best class to graduate, we elected Maxine Griffith, Eugene Chappell, Rick Orlandi, and Kathy Lohr to head us in reaching this goal. As the curtain begins to descend our class takes its last bow before going out to begin a bright future. The members of the cast have played many roles in this play, scholar, sports, hero, chorus member, class leader, band member-fulfilling all the roles to the best of their ability. Lamonica Two weeks before school began, the mem- bers of our football team were working hard at summer camp to prepare themselves for the ex- citing season that was enjoyed by the Boswell football fans. Our first game of the season with Forbes was a thrilling event which held the attention of the viewers until the very last second. The cold weather did not prevent a capacity crowd from following the J.B.J. team to Cone-N maugh Twp. for their next game. Conemaugh scored first, gaining a seven point lead, however, Boswell soon caught up and went on to win by a score of 19-7. Boswell fans were especially happy at this win, for it was the Bears' first victory over Conemaugh Twp. in 18 years. Conemaugh Boro, the Bears next opponent, handed them their Hrst defeat of the season. Ligonier was the next team to suffer a loss from the Boswell team. A very decisive victory it was as our team tromped their opponents by a score of 39-O. In succession, Boswell was defeated at their next four attempts by Shade, Berlin, Somerset and Ferndale. The last game of the season saw a revived Boswell team defeat Meyersdale by a score of 28-6. The Bears four wins, five losses season was a memorable one. Much credit is to be given to Jim Campbell for the fine coaching job he did. Helping the coach in his many duties were Stan- ley Krupnik and Patrick Krupper. John Behon and Jolm Bingler shared honors as Co-captains of the team. Bill F etcho, Carlton Barron, Paul Trella and Jim Bence gave their services as managers. jha .4dwnL1b,pfw1wLvg,fluL ' vip' ,.
