Perhaps you have been asked this question many times and have had to reply, I don't know. At the beginning of this school year, we, the Seniors of 1959, reflected on how often we had been asked the question, What does Rex Collium mean? and decided that maybe it was time we did something about it. lt took only a short time to discover that REX COI.l.IUM, literally trans- lated from the Latin, means King of the Mountains. Well, this was fine- it began to answer our question, but hardly told us why our yearbook had been given this name. Further research revealed that in 1927, in the first issue of REX COL- LIUM, a poem had been written that explained things quite clearly. Boswell is located in the heart of a range of mountains and was once the scene of heated competition among Indians for the hand of an Indian maid. Warriors came from far and near to Boswell- Here they raced and here they wrestled, All their skill and strength was tried and when it was all over the Indians- Have proclaimed this little mountain As, 'The Monarch of the HiIls. ' -Chas. A. Weed The time of the Indian is past, but Boswell today is still the scene of competition. Our daily life at J. B. J. is dedicated to the task of educational, cultural, social and athletic development. When a school sets itself a goal as wide in scope as this, there is bound to be competition, however, through much individual effort and with the help of guidance, our work is channeled into what will be best for the common good. This yearbook, our King of the Mountains, serves as testimony to the wonderful memories we hold as we recall our life at J. B. J. and how we will always regard our school as Monarch of the Hills. -... .nn --.e... .. .... . ,... , ... .- .:.i.: g :.:.:.:. ' ' . . Leslie Simpson Miss Dorothy Sheftic, Mrs. Sara Leventry Graduation-a time of happi- ness, a feeling of accomplishment and the realization that you have reached a goal for which you have long been striving. To some, gradu- ation from high school is just a stepping stone to higher education. For many it will be the completion of your school days, but not the completion of your learning. Whether you are aware of it or not, you have learned something new every day. As a small child, you learned many things from your parents-those two wonderful peo- ple who knew the answers to all your questions. As you grew old- er and entered school, your scope of learning was broadened by your association with teachers and friends. Now, as you leave high school, do not consider yourself fin- ished with learning. Strive always to learn, because the more knowl- edge we obtain, the better we are able to understand and cope with our problems, thus making the world a happier place in which to live. Congratulations. R. LESLIE SIMPSON SCHOOL BOARD Seated, L. to R.-R. Lohr, V. Griffith, R. Stewart, A. Walter, M. Gilbert, G. Fetcho, S. Leventry, H. Stuck, C. Szewczyk. Standing-O. Coleman, A. Friedline. official welcome In the bible story of the talents, the unfaithful servant buried his talent in the ground, it was of no use there, it did no good there. Edu- cation is to help make the student aware of what he is, what talents he has, and the possibilities for put- ting those talents to use. The high school graduatewho does not put to use, and to good uses, that which the Lord has given him, is an un- faithful servant of himself, his com- munity and his country, no matter how few or how many his talents may be. The challenge of today's world to the graduate is to be both a faithful servant and a servant of good in the use of whatever he has learned. To not use an education wisely and for good is the greatest crime of all. A better world can come only from better people. JAMES B. DEITZ James B. Next we are at the football and basketball games where we see some of our star players as they were just enter- ing the field of sports. Here, we also see some of the girls as cheerleaders. During our Fresh- man year, our majorettes were also chosen. Finally, as we look back to our first year in high school, we see ourselves at our class party that our class advisors, Miss Davis, Mrs. Lundquest, Mr. O'Connor and Mr. Chervenak helped make a success. The party is what we had been look- ing forward to, and it was a perfect way to end the year. As we look back once again, our picture is getting clearer, we now see ourselves as Sopho- mores. Our class advisors, Mrs. Haberlen, Mr. Broderick, Mr. Hackett and Mr. Kerekes and our class officers are Edgar Robertson, Madeline Pa- lazzi, Bernard Panek and Alex Sierocky began their job of leading us through out second very successful year. lt was as Sophomores that we chose our course to follow through high school and our future years. Most of the class showed their musical ability by entering the Senior band or chorus. Several of the boys received letters for their athletic ability in football, basketball and wrestling. This was also the first year we could have money making activities. Our first big project was the football dance where a king and queen were chosen to reign over the 1956 football season. Other projects were two con- cessions at the football games, dances and a skating party. Yes, at the end of our Sophomore year we had completed our second very success- ful year at J. B. J. and were looking forward to two more. Our picture is even more clear now, as we see our Junior year about to start. This was when Darla Borelle as President, Edgar Robert- son as Vice-President, Anita Sheftic as Secretary and Madeline Palazzi as Treasurer worked with our class advisors to make this one of our most active years. Our class advisors were Mrs. Hab- erlen, Miss Wilhelm, Mr. Kerekes and Mr. Hac- kett. Most of the class took part at the skating party we sponsored at Latrobe and also at the concessions and dances we had. All the class helped sell magazines, pens and candy. The most exciting of our activities that year was the Junior-Senior Prom. Everyone enjoyed making the decorations for our Evening in Paris. As we danced that evening, it wasn't hard at all to imagine that we were right in the heart of Paris. The prom marked the end of our Junior activi- ties. Our picture is very clear now, for we are seniors. This is the year we had been waiting for. We elected Darla Borelle as President, Stan- ley Mincek as Vice President, Anita Sheftic as Secretary and Joyce Gindlesperger as Treasurer. Our class advisors were Mrs. Haupt, Mr. Hackett, and Mr. Kerekes. Our class had two concessions, they were after the Forbes and Conemaugh Twp. games. We sold ball point pens, pen desk sets, letter holders and Christmas candy. Everyone worked hard to make our Senior Play a success. lt was called A Full House, and it held parts for 14 of our 600 students. Mrs. Haupt directed the play and it was enjoyed by all. Our class was represented at both District Band and Dis- trict Chorus. Although we did not have a Fall Festival Queen, we were represented at the Maple Queen Contest at Cochran Junior High School by Anita Sheftic. Other important events of our Senior year were the receiving of our graduation rings and the exchanging of name cards and senior pictures. Then, in no time at all, we were sending our graduation announce- ments, going to our Senior banquet and attend- ing the prom. All of us will remember Class Day, Baccalaureate and Commencement, for they were our final activities at J. B. J. Yes, we, the Class of 59 are proud of our success at J. B. J. and we hope that our future years will be just as successful. The story was that of Mr. Howell who was away on business for a friend. While he was away there was a iewel robbery in which he became involved because his briefcase was mixed up with the burgIar's. When he got home, Mr. Howell's new wife was very worried and her aunt made suspicious claims. Mrs. Howell found jewels in her husbands briefcase and she felt she should protect him, however, the maid called the police. They were anxious to see the year to a successful finish as it would pave the way for their last year in high school. Although their work in American History, Chemistry, Shorthand and Spanish sometimes turned into a slight strug- gle, there were always many social events to keep them from becoming too frustrated. The class advisors were Miss LeComte, Mr. DeBlase, Miss Vota, Mr. Shaffer, Mr. LaVigne and Mrs. Allen. The students chose as their class offi- cers: Maxine Griffith, President, Eugene Chap- pell, Vice-President, Helen Stern, Secretary, and Kathy Lohr, Treasurer. Six of the Juniors entered the Voice of Democracy contest. They presented their writ- ings in an assembly on November 24, 1958. Row 1, I.. to R.-S. Adams, T. Adams, J. Albright, J. Baca, C. Kuncher Having survived the first year of their high school career, the Sophomores eagerly shed their green coats and settled down to a busy year of studies and activities. The most common sub- jects taken by the Sophomores this year were Biology, World History, English, Typing and Shorthand. This was the first year to participate in money making proiects. Though their treasury is small, they hope to build it up for the coming activities in their Junior and Senior years. The Sophomore Class is very active in extra- curricular activities and are well represented in school functions. Among the social events of the year, the Sophomores held a very successful Football dance. A large crowd attended this aFfair. Jay Volk is the very capable class president and is assisted by Vice-President, Dixie Patrick, Secretary, Carolyn Blough, and Treasurer, Carol Darr. The class advisors are Mr. Chervenak, Mr. Krupnik, Mr. Scewczyk and Mr. Campbell. f 1 . V ,11--VV., .1 ,.,. 91' 1' ,- .,..,, 1.1 , I H1 .1 iw if V - ' ,ii ' . , S iii-11, , flu, , Row 1, L. to R.-F. Eighth Grade The high ambitions of the eighth grade class are somewhat hampered, because they are not permitted to take part in many activities just now, however, they have done their share of keeping busy with proiects. Many of the members of our class are active in the Junior band. Here they lend their talent as individuals to making a successful group. They are very proud to be able to contribute their bit in this way. This class has been outstanding in other fields. One of the most notable of these other fields is that of the cheerleaders. Five of the eight Junior Varsity cheerleadrs are members of this class. They are Janet Tipton, Dianne Lasky, Toni Reinholtz, Linda Pronesti and Delores Bene- dict. And of course, all the members of the class are very faithful about attending games and helping to cheer the team to victory. The class held a big class party in the spring which was very successful and a good time was had by all. Officers of the class are: Susan Yoder .,................ President Gail Spory ............ Vice President Janet Tipton ............. .,,. T reasurer Richard Peterson ........ Secretary Always on hand are our capable advisors Mrs. Mishler, Mrs. Murphy, Mr. Cook, and Mr. Drwal to offer advice whenever needed. Seventh Grade Election of class oFFicers was a big event for this class who was just starting in the Junior High. 150 students makes this class the largest ever enrolled at J. B.J. The following people were elected to represent the class for the year 1958-1959: Joe Kaufman, President, Tony Scew- czyk, Vice-President, Paulette Lamonica, Treas- urer, Linda Sheeler, Secretary. A class meeting was held after the election and the new officers were introduced to the group. Other selections made by the group were the slogan, the class flower and class colors. The students decided that Hitch your wagon to a star was a good slogan and the red rose would be their class fiower and the colors red and white would help them to be loyal to their class and their school. The outstanding activity held in the Spring was the informal party. Dancing, refreshments and the selection of a King and Queen, who reigned over the party made the party the high- light of the year. The class sponsors who gave the class spe- cial help this year were: Mrs. Haberlen, Mrs. Lundquest, Mrs. Bossart, Mr. Hostetler, Mr. Brock- unier and Mr. Policcichio. v .I . ' z , .,,. Student Council The governmental body of our school is the student council. The aim of this council is to seek to create a frank understanding of mutual prob- lems among the student body, the faculty, and the administration. lt also provides an oppor- tunity for members of the school to discuss stu- dent problems, and in so doing fosters a feeling of friendliness and responsibility. School spirit always seems to be a problem among schools which are composed of students who are interested in many different activities, but through the effort of the student council, the students of our school unite into a group that sup- ports practically all the activities which they feel are worthy of the attention of the students. Many a student would certainly miss the council if they were to stop selling ice cream and candy at noon-just another project of the coun- cil to serve the student and keep him happy. Always willing to learn new things and to contribute helpful suggestions to others, our school sent Kay Lohr and Bernard Blamble to the West Central Association of Student Councils, held this year at New Kensington. Through the sharing of ideas in this way, our school has be- come a much more enioyable place. Row 'l, l.. to R.-Mr. Kerekes, P. Eller, L. Hemminger, L. Sheeler, J. Klebonis, R. Cebula, P. J. band started their year in the usual busy way-by providing music and halftime shows forthe football games. Marching along with the band at the football games and parades were the high steppin' majorettes. What band would be complete without them? Leading the maior- ettes was Joan Vish. She was assisted by these capable senior girls: Anita Sheftic, Darla Borelle and Carolyn Critchtield. Acting as Boswell band's drum major and student director was Alex Sierocky, Alex deserves a rich round of applause for the very capable and competent job he always per- formed. Clockwise-M. The band's biggest proiect for the year was getting ready for their annual band concert.i Much time and et- fort went into preparing for the wonderful show they pre- sented. It is seldom realized by thelcasual observer that much concerted effort is re- quired iby all its members before la band can perform harmoniously. Participating in J.B.J.'s mixed choir pro- vides a pleasant diversion from the daily routine of study, as well as allowing students to become familiar with the thrill of being part of a group which is able to blend their voices into a song of pleasure-giving melody. The Chorus is popular indeed, as is evi- denced by its enrollment. The group, this past year, boasted an enrollment of 190 strong. To anyone else, directing such a group would be a gargantuan task, but Mrs. Louise Thomas, the Chorus director, handled the iob in her usual smooth, eiificient way. Activities during the year were numerous and varied. Paramount of the choir's time con- suming activities, however, was preparation for the annual Spring Concert. This program was greeted by an enthusiastic audience who showed their appreciation by their generous applause. And, of course, our talented group was able to send representatives to both All-County and District Chorus. As the school year neared its end, the choir payed final tribute to the graduating seniors by providing music for the Baccalaureate and Com- mencement programs. This was the cry of students of the dramatics club as they prepared to present their dramatic productions for fellow stu- dent and town audiences. Busy, busy were the club members as they pursued their interest and got near to the final moment when the curtain would rise. With Mrs. Haupt acting as director, and the club helping with its production, the Senior class presented a three act comedy, A Full House, in November. Never will we forget the howling re- action of the audience to the clever antics of the cast of A Full House. l The members of the club, sponsored by Mrs. Haupt, strive to become more familiar with drama as a means of expression, techniques of acting and problems of staging. With their true interest in the theater and the desire to elevate drama to an ex- citing, aesthetic experience, we are sure the mem- bers of the dramawtics club will continue to present bigger and better productions forvtheir audiences. High School finished their 1958- 1959 football season with one win cmd eight losses. The season began darkly for our team as they were defeated in their first five con- secutive games. lt seemed the club would rally as they won their next game by a deci- sive 20-O score, however, they were not able to win their last three games. The team is not discouraged by their record for they feel it is only a beginning which will lead to bright- er days. Next year's team will boast 19 let- termen with a loss of only 4 seniors. Girls are chosen in the spring of the year to represent our school for the following school year. During the summer these girls, on their own, practice very frequently. When Septem- ber rolls around their real job begins. The cheer- leaders must be present at all athletic functions and, unlike the members of any one team who may rest after the season has passed, they con- tinue to cheer from one season into another. Basketball The Jenner-Boswell-Jennerstown Bears have made new Triumphs in their 1958- 1959 basketball season. They proved themselves a team of which our school could be proud. The Bears finished their season with a final record cf 21 wins and 3 losses. The team was made up of three seniors and ten iuniors coached by Mr. DeBlase. Since our school will lose only three team members, there is hope for another cham- pionship team in 1959-1960. The team's sixteen wins brought them to first place in the Somerset County B League. Our school then travelled to Bed- ford where they defeated Saxton-Liberty High School to win the District 5 Champion- ship. The Bears were stopped from gaining further glories as they were handed a loss by Gallitzin at Juniata College in Hunting- clon. Wrestling is watched on T. V. and many wrong opinions are formed from the encoun- ter, however, it is the cleanest sport known in high school and college. lt is the only sport offered in which small boys as well as big boys can partici- pate, every participant is oftered a challenge, not only as a team, but as an individual. Something most people do not know about wrestling is that it is not a grunt and groan sport. lt is a sport consisting of three important ingredi- ents-skill, speed and, most impor- tant, conditioning. At least 200 miles of running have been covered by our wrestlers this year. When the weath- er permits, the running is done out of doors. Using about ten diFFerent ex- ercises, our boys have done about l,l00 repetitions of each. The result of all this work adds up to a group of boys who are physically 'Fit clue to having given freely of their time for a sport they love.
