OFFICE STAFF Mrs M. Thomas, Miss D Sheftic, Miss J. Williams. Seniors! What does a diploma mean? That you have attended school a certain number of years? That you have learned certain facts and mastered certain skills? That you have earned the required number of credits for graduation? That you have received training for a future ca- reer? Yes, it means all these things. But it means considerably more. And it is in this umorev that is found the basic purpose of your entire public school education. Much has been said recently of the Russian school system. One thing is quite certain about their system: its underlying objective is the teaching of communism and the development of unswerving loyalty to it. So in America the primary goal of public education is the instilling of the principles of our Way of life-the demo- cratic Way-and the development of faith in them, Your diploma implies that you have been given the opportunity to learn the Ways of de- mocracy. This is the big Kmorev in what your diploma means. Whether or not your knowledge and skills help build a bigger and better earth satellite than Russia really isnit so important. But it is all important that you hold high the torch of liberty, that you preserve and defend democracy by living it, that the big more, be treasured as your most valuable possession.
