O w Q f W FH W K 1558 VS Q Foreword . . . This is the story of the class of '58 and how our lives were affected by our sojourn at I. B. I. It has been said that education is the key to the kind of life you want to live and the kind of person you want to be. Our years at I. 13.1. have been used primarily in trying to obtain that key. Our different interests and per- sonalities have led us into many extracurricular activitiesg our education has been both broadened and enriched by all of these factors. This, our Senior year, seems like the climax of everythingg actually it is the Alpha and Omega --the end of school for some, but the beginning of a new life for all. We, the class of 1958, dedicate this book to the past and to the future. It is our tribute to what we have accomplished thus far as a group and to what We, as individuals. will accomplish. 2 . Day after day the tools of learning and thinking and doing have been placed in your hands. You have studied, learned, and developed certain skills and knowledges. You have mastered some of the principles of worthy living and worthy citizenship. You have climbed far to reach the eminence from which you now view your world. I congratulate you. Your school, your parents, your friends do more than wish you well. Great are their ex- pectations as you move forward to ever new and widening horizons. R. Leslie Simpson A110 fl lfvili-fi -C its SCHOOL BOARD lst row, L to R: Mr. john Policie- chio, Mr. Charles Szewczyk, Mrs. Gertrude Fetcho, Mrs. Margaret Gil- bert, Mrs. Sara Leventrv, Mr. Iohn Schrock. 2nd row: Mr. Joseph Hoff- man, Mr. James Kaufman, Mr. Ar- thur St. Clair, Mr. William Bills, Mr. Robert Stewart, Mr. Alton Wal- ters, Mr. Fred Miller, Mr. James Friedline, Mr. Oscar Coleman, Mr. Vinton Griffith. 6 OFFICE STAFF Mrs M. Thomas, Miss D Sheftic, Miss J. Williams. Seniors! What does a diploma mean? That you have attended school a certain number of years? That you have learned certain facts and mastered certain skills? That you have earned the required number of credits for graduation? That you have received training for a future ca- reer? Yes, it means all these things. But it means considerably more. And it is in this umorev that is found the basic purpose of your entire public school education. Much has been said recently of the Russian school system. One thing is quite certain about their system: its underlying objective is the teaching of communism and the development of unswerving loyalty to it. So in America the primary goal of public education is the instilling of the principles of our Way of life-the demo- cratic Way-and the development of faith in them, Your diploma implies that you have been given the opportunity to learn the Ways of de- mocracy. This is the big Kmorev in what your diploma means. Whether or not your knowledge and skills help build a bigger and better earth satellite than Russia really isnit so important. But it is all important that you hold high the torch of liberty, that you preserve and defend democracy by living it, that the big more, be treasured as your most valuable possession. Your diploma should mean this to you above all else. james B. The year has been filled with new experiences and interests for each mem- ber of the class. Whether it was knowledge acquired or new friendships gained the year has probably been one of the most memorable in the history of this group of Juniors. In both sports and studies the Juniors have achieved much. They elected these officers to lead the class: Darla Borelle, President, Edgar Robert- son, Vice President, Anita Sheftic, Treasurer, and Madeline Palazzi, Secretary. Their activities included a skating party held at Latrobe, concessions, a dance after a football game, and the sale of magazines, pens, and candy, To top off the school year, the juniors sponsored the beautifully decorated Junior- Senior Prom with Evening in Parisn as the theme. 1st row-B. M. A num- ber of the group were members of this organiza- tion. The local group was represented at the Central-Western District Chorus Festival by John Lennox, Sandra Raley, and Robert Thomas. The Chorus was greatly aided in its Work this year by the acquisition of chorus risers which made it possible to hold rehearsals on the stage rather than in the main body of the auditorium. On the nights of April 5, 1958 and Novem- ber 22, 1958 you could hear these Words, Cur- tain going upll, as the Class of i'58v presented their Junior and Senior Class Plays. As juniors this class proudly presented 'iShy Cuyv under the direction of Mrs. Allen and Miss Davis. The play centered around the difficulties that Fred Hastings fBob Thomas? encounters when he decides to earn some spending money by posing for C-lamor Girl Cosmetics Ads. His friend Larry Madison QBill Landisj also finds himself in trouble when he buys a dog on the installment plan for his girl friend Julie Tucker fBose Vesekj When an eccentric little lady of eighty CBarbara Eashj decides to play football, any attempt at trying to preserve the sanity of other casual observers becomes useless. Other members of the cast Were: Peggy Deist, Kay Knupp, Sandra Raley, Wilma F etcho, Larry Shannon, Wendell Berkey, and Dave Lease. As Seniors, the presentation of KHillbilly Weddin, l' directed by Mrs. Haupt, was a howling success. Paw fBill Landisj tries to marry off his six daughters, Celie fBarbara Mincel-ij, Bonnie Mae QWilma Fetchol, Iuney Lou flane VVal- bushj, Four, Five, and Six Uudy Mauzy, Carol Sadowsky, and Barbara Eashj. Celie, the oldest daughter, is unable to catch a husband, due to the fact that she seldom takes a bath so Paw bathes her in the pig trough. VVhen the Dude, Ronald Maxwell QDan Hydockl and his Aunt Lucy fKay Knuppj appear on the scene, Paw has his gun in hand searching for husbands for his girls. With the Upsleighers and the Cousins involved, the play turned out to be full of hilarious feuds and fun. B. j. as very green freshmen. To give the class the leadership it needed to help 'them complete a worth-while school career, Mary Sheeler, Wilma F etcho, Glenda Kay Knupp, and Barbara Mincek were chosen as class officers. Several of the boys were already preparing for the time when they would take their places on the varsity football and basketball teams. Cheer- ing on our boys were Cora St. Clair and Shirley Eckenrode. The class, under the direction of Mr. F ederick, Mrs. Bucior, Mrs. Romanoff, and Mr. Hostetler, had their annual class party, As freshmen, we were looking forward to three more years at I. B. I.-each one being more successful than the other. Returning to school as sophomores, we had the opportunity of selecting a course to follow through high school and our fuhlre years. This was also the first year we were given a chance to participate in money-making projects. Sandra Haley was elected to lead our class. She was ably assisted by Wendell Berkey, Vice President, Kay Knupp, Secretary, and Wilma F etcho, Treasurer. Our advisors were: Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Allen, Mr. Szewczyk, and Mr. Krupnik. Some of the boys participated in football, wrestling, and basketball. To the extra curricular events we contributed two varsity cheerleaders, six majorettes, and others who joined Chorus and Band. Our class also sponsored a 'cFootball Dance, which was held on November 14. A king and queen were chosen to reign over the the 1955 football season. We also held a dance after the Rockwood basketball game and spon- sored an assembly program, featuring some of the talent of the class. Before we knew it, our sopho- more year was ended and we were looking for- ward to the next year. Our junior year found us making plans for the busy days to follow. Bob Thomas was President, assisted by Larry Shannon, Vice Pres- ident, Kay Knupp, Secretary, Barbara Mincek, Treasurer. Guided by these and by our ad- visors, Mr. Krupnik, Mr. Sheftic, Mrs. Bossart, and Mrs. Haupt, we felt that we would fulfill our dream of becoming a good, active class of the high school. We sponsored the concession stand at the Bedford football game on October 12, followed by a skating party on the 23rd day of the same month. We also sponsored a dance after one of the basketball games fully decorated Christmas Dance, complete success. Another event of magazines, but this didn't go and a beauti- which was a was the sale over as well as we hoped. Then came the junior Play'-a three-act comedy, entitled Shy Guyf, Bob Thomas, Bill Landis, Wilma F etcho, and Peggy Deist had the lead roles. Mrs. Allen was the ad- visor and director. She was assisted by Miss Davis. The last activity for the year was the jr.-Sr. Prom, which was held on May 3 for the departing seniors. The theme was Pink Para- disef' the decorations being pink and white, trimmed with glitter. This made our junior year complete. At last we were seniors! The class elected Dan Hydock as President, with Bob Thomas, Vive President, Kay Knupp, Secretary, and Barbara Mincek, Treasurer. Mr. Krupnik, Mrs. Haupt, and Mr. Sheftic were advisors for the year. We decided to have a Halloween Mas- querade Dance, with prizes given for the dif- ferent costumes. This, our first big money-mak- ing project for the year, turned out to be very successful. We also had the concession stand at two of the football games. The second big event was the Senior Play, held on November 22, entitled Hillbilly Weddinfv Bill Landis and Barbara Mincek had the leading roles. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Haupt. Two of our students, Sandra Raley and Bob Thomas, represented us at District Chorus, while jim Brant represented us at District Band. Glenda Kay Knupp was chosen to represent our school in the 1957 Fall Festival Celebra- tion at Somerset. Sandra Raley was then elected as I. B.I.,s Maple Queen Contestant and won the title of Maid of Honor. The contest was held in Cochran junior High School. By this time, Class rings were beginning to gleam on the fingers of the seniors. The exchange of Senior pictures was also an important event in our last year at j. B.I. Then-name cards, graduation announcements, the senior banquet, the Prom, Class Day, and finally our Gradua- tionv! Yes, we were Green Freshmeni' when we entered j.B.j., but at last our goal in high school was completed, and our diplomas were distributed. We, the Class of ,58, can now look to the future with assurance and know that our dream of success has been fulfilled. BASKETBALL As described by our basketball coach, Mr. DeBlase, at this seasonis Athletic Banquet, Our team this year was one of the best the school has had in recent yearsf' The I. B. I. FIVE, finished the season with a record of 14 wins and 8 losses. They were tied for second place in the Somerset County B League Contest. The Basketball team started with a strong squad from which no one had graduated the previous year. Their spirit was high, as was the school spirit. The boys proved themselves a team to be proud of. Seniors graduating this year will be Ronald Wasylczak, Bill Landis, and Harry Pacifico. There is also a team to look forward too, including two of last season's regulars and a substitute. The behind-the-scenes workers included George Zablotney, senior managerg serving in the same capacity were Bernard Panek, William Fetcho and William Croyle. Wilma Fetcho was scorekeeper. And we will not forget the Iunior Varsity under Coach Danielson. Their wins were few, but their spirit was high with shining hopes for the future. 62 mmwf 2 E 3 restlin Our Wrestling squad this year did a Won- derful job as they revealed their courage and ambition to the eager spectators. Although often unpredictable, our boys displayed a poised, Well-balanced team. The 1957-58 Wrestling team was coached by Louis Pike. The boys practiced often, im- proving their skills. They Worked hard and practiced industriously from the first match at Somerset to the last one at Everett. The underclassmen have gained valuable experience during the past season, experience that will benefit them greatly in their future years at I. B. I. Dave Lease, Captain, and Lester Shaffer, Co-captain, helped to make this year a suc- cessful one. Ronald Whitfield and Edgar Bob- ertson, managers, handled the equipment and attended to other important duties. The District Five Tournament was held here at I. B. I. David Lease, Ted Moskey, and Iack Horner were selected to represent our school. Graduation means the loss of four wres- tlers: Dave Lease, Dan Hydock, Lester Shaffer, and Ted Moskeyg but great are the expectations for the 1958-59 season as many of our grapplers return to lead us on to victory. lst row, L: to R.-E.
