XVhen we mean to build, we first survey the plot, then draw the modelf' The 1953 Rex Collium is finally completed and members of the Literary Staff and Business Staff had no small part in it. It was indeed a gargantuan task to plan a yearbook of this type, for it involved deciding on a color scheme, plan- ning the layout, typing, composing write-ups, taking photographs, reading copy, and soliciting advertisements ad infinitum. Organizations and individuals alike cooper- ated wonderfully to make it possible to meet the deadlines-first to the engraver, then to the printer. Member-, of the Literary Staff worked steadily from the sketchy. indefinite beginning until the final dummy and copy were mailed to the printer. XVhile the Literary Staff was thus slaving away, the members of the Business Staff tramped the streets of the local town and neigh- boring towns soliciting the advertisements which play so vital a part in financing our annual. To all these who made the production of this annual possible we wish to extend a heartfelt thanks. VVe express our sincere appreciation to Miss Marv Ellen Sprowls, Mrs. Dorene Lape and Mr. Franklin La Vigne, advisors, the members ot both staits, the Zimmerman Engraving Com- pany. C. fxleClar4-n We figure to ourselves the thing we like and then We build it up as chance will have it, on the rock or sandf, The sophomores too have decided what they like and are on their way building, tier by tier, a successful high school career. They have already reached a goal which in later years will prove to be either their good fortune or their down fall. For it is in this year that they have the opportunity of selecting a course to follow through high school and perhaps through their future years. They have built around them their friends and a stable foundation for their lives. The sophomores have a large class this year, numbering one hundred twenty seven students. XVhen it comes time to buckle down to work the sophomores are right there on the job. With the help of their advisors, Mr. Kerekes, Mr. Hostetler, and Mr. Englehart, the sopho- mores participated in several activities, one of which was the selling of Christmas Candy. During the month of February, the sophomores sponsored a Heart Hopn Dance at which time they selected a King and Queen of Hearts. This ambitions group also sold handmade football pins during the pigskin season. XVe are sure if the sophomores continue with their good work, their keen interest in school affairs, and their studies as well as their activities, thev will he certain to build a firm foundation for their lives. The foundation for a solid. stalwart class was laid this year by the apprentices among us, our hardworking freshmen. To give the class the leadership it needed to help them build a worth while school career, Douglas Speigle, David Coleman. Blanche Gowartv. and Arlene YVeimer were chosen as class officers. XVithout a pause the members went right to work. holding as their first project of the year, a Halloween Party for the class. No need to say it was a favorable success. Football brought the heroes into the limelight until the girls stepped into the picture. Nancy Benedict. joan Pronesti. and Betty Vinosky were proudly hailed as the three freshman cheerleade1's. During basketball season the girls had more occasion to cheer when the boys went to further glory on the basketball court. And we must not forget those brave grap- plers who participated in contests and gained more honors for their class. At one of the lively class meetings the mem- bers decided to venture into the business World. All pitched into the work and the luncheon they planned showed the foresight of the class in business matters. It benefitted not only the class. but the students of the school as well. The club has taken several field trips. includ- ing one to the local sand company. Movies were shown of the various Helds in which geographical knowledge plays an important part. The mem- bers also practiced making maps and other charts. Mr. Patrick Krupper a new teacher at 1. B. succeeds Mr. Donald O,Connor as club ad- visor. Of course all the shutter-bugs were anxious to join but to maintain the clubis standards only those with a camera were admitted. From these busy camera fans the officers selected were President, Betty Vinoskyg Vice President, Bill Danielsg and Secretary, Harry Conn. Under Mr. Bowmarfs guidance the club went to work to learn the fundamentals of photogra- phy. Cameras were taken apart to study the mechanism and to show the various steps in taking and producing pictures. VVhen the mem- bers finally mastered those preliminary details thev set out snapping every one, every thing that came into view. Pictures brought to club meet- ings were criticized and praised. All this helped the members achieve the goal the club had set at the beginning of the vear. To use and understand the possibilities of a camera. If you spy a student stalling around cameras in hand you mav be sure he is one of our royal shutter bugs. GEOGRAPHY CLUB Seated, Front Row, Left to Right: VV doxvsky. 1 Row 2: J. Pyle. UI. These are usually the opening words of the Library Club meetings. Often the fifteen junior and senior high girls are so busy discussing books and events that they refuse to come to attention. The Library Club was revived this year hy Nlrs. julia Caples. our new librarian. The mem- be1's of the executive body' are president. Lois Leasock. seniorg vice-president. Ruth XVilliams. sophomore: treasurer. Gail Racev. senior: secre- tary. Betty Leasock, senior. Under Nlrs. Caples, expert supervision. the girls studied the principles of librarv science including the methods of mending worn books. and preparation of new books for librarv use. The librarv club members added color and varietv to the library bv decorating the walls with interesting pictures of famous men. historic scenes and events. Because of the enthusiasm and devotion of these assistants the library has become a well- run organization of our school. I LIBRARY N f r XVilliains. L. Ia-asoek. Standing: A. Saylor, E. If you should tour the shop during club periods or at certain times during the week you would be amazed at the girls who are competing with boys in woodwork. Mr. Owen Horner. the club advisor. is proud of the achievements of the girls. YVith 54 members from the junior and senior high active in the club this year, the advisor has found himself quite busy. The beginners must be taught the fundamen- tals of using tools and wood and the older mem- bers given a start on more difficult articles of woodwork. If, at the end of the vear, the girls would have a displav of their work you would see a variety of book-ends. wallshelves. end tables. nightstands. cedar chest and more arti- cles. There is no doubt that the time and effort given bv these girls is well worth their while. I time wvrldlf zz wildef-neu GIRLS' SHOP F. Cohn. S. Querry. R. Clark. A. A girls' sextet composed of three seniors and three juniors helped to add to the fame of the club. These girls found them- selves singing. not only with the Clee Club. but performing for P. T. .-X. and Lions' Club meetings as well. Another program was planned to please the home audience, a Spring Concert. Its prepara- tion was by no means easy as the students found out. There was singing and more singing needed to gain perfection for this. the climax of their busy Year. The four accompanists shared an important part in the program and were also readv to gain honor for the Club. The memor- able night came late in springtime with everyone ready to do his best. After the Concert the senior members found themselves bowing out in favor of the underclassmen who sang to them at their graduation exercises. This was the football outlook on August 25. 1952. But under the capable coaching of Nlr. Szewczyk, Mr. Pike, Nlr. Englehart. and Mr. Krupper, the 23 boys who reported for the first two weeks of practice came along well. The boys worked hard and as the season progressed it paid off. The team played Forbes in a scrimmage game on September 5 and showed promise. On September 12, the Bedford Bisons journeyed to Bos- well to seek their first win of the season, but as the game progressed the Bears outplayed the much heavier Bedford team to win their first game of the vear 28-12. Next the Bears played Conemaugh Township and against a bigger and better team that had slaughtered them in previous years. thev did a good job but lost 22-7. The next game was the most thrilling of the season. Playing at the Point Stadium against Conemaugh Boro. the Bears found themselves behind bv two touchdowns in the last quarter but the determination that they were not going to lose led them to score 20 points in the last quarter to win 34-32. Richland was the next victim of the Bears bv a 19 to 12 score. lVe then lost to Shade bv 27-0 and Portage 20-6 before meeting our arch-rival, Somerset. Somerset over- came an earlv Bear lead and went on to win 15-7. Berlin and Nleversdale went down to defeat at our hands, so that although hampered bv iniuries we ended our first success- ful season in many years. Dave Horner was named to the Johnstown All-Tribune team for the second straight year and Boswell placed three members on the All-County team-John Vinosky, center: Steve Benedict, fullbackg and Dave Horner, quarterback. These added to the successful year. but it was the team as a unit that gave us a winning record. Icft to Right: D. Horner. G. Phillips. D, blL'f1lCllll S. Benedict, Al. NVhitfield. Vim? Our first game with Conemaugh Twp. was a tough defeat to bear. but the noble Bears pushed their way back by winning the game with Nlev- ersdale with a slim margin of 49-47. The next two games found us tasting bitter defeat again at the hands of Bedford 61-78 and Shade 36-48. But the bovs decided not to let anything short of a brick wall stop them. NVhen we battled Rockwood, the squad came through with a victory of 48-40. The next game with Forbes will not be forgotten. XVith an anxious crowd our bovs tried but lost 51-63. Our rival, Somerset. came to give us out of our worst defeats 51-72. After that our Bears put up a valiant fight. but Berlin. Stonvcreek. Nleversdale. and Forbes proved mightier than our inexperienced squad. In spite of this. the bovs closed our vear with two victories over Stonvcreek 45-40 and Bedford 65-34. Steve Benedict. high scorer of the team. made 22 points in the latter game to give his individual score another boost. Graduation means the loss of three players. Steve Benedict. George Phillips, and john P. Baker. but great are the expectations for next year, for most of our plavers will be returning. lst Row, Kneeling: J. Mattey. L. Beese. NV. Lint, H. llunter, D. The squad, handicapped by the lack of material and adequate practice facilities, tu1'ned in a 1 and 7 record for the sea- son. The team opened its season against WVindber and was beaten by a 28-15 score. Bedford then took the measure of the Bears to the tune of 23- 15. Our team, trying to snap the losing streak, lost to Conemaugh Twp. 23-22 in a thriller which had everyone on his feet. VVe again met defeat at the hands of Johnstown, and Wfindber by MR. KRUPPER a 39-9 score. After dropping our first 5 matches, We recovered to beat Somerset 24-14. Cone- maugh again defeated our human pretzels by 26-14 and Somerset avenged an earlier setback by beating us 31-14. At the end of the season our team entered the District 5 Tournament held at Everett. Dave Horner. Captain and Senior matman. and Gov.
