OF EVENTS FOR THE PAST YEAR 0UR STORY . . . We, the class of 1951, proudly present this annual. To us it is the symbol of the four years we worked, played and spent together. We will always remember the friendships that we made here. Now that these four years of preparation are over, we stand ready to step into the world and do our chosen work. Our parents and teachers have struggled to keep us going in the right way. Now that we are older and wiser we realize all that they have done to help us. We thank our parents for the opportunities they have given us, and our teachers for helping us to make the most of these opportunities. And now.. , on with the music. BOSWELL BOROUGH . . . JENNERSTOWN BOROUGH lib it tx UR Al-MA MATER CTune: The Halls of Ivyj Oh, how happy are the memories that remain with us today. And we will not forget, tho' we be far, far, away. Oh, the days of joys and sadness every heart with pride will swell, As every voice in sadness bids its own fond fare-well. One day a hush will fall, the footsteps of us all will echo down the hall and disappear, But as we sadly start our journeys far apart, A part of every heart will linger here, and the Days of joys and sadness, in the halls of J. B. J. Will live with us forever and be ever in our praise. - Erlwrzrd Kisfler 5 The Literary Staff and Business Stalf, this year with Miss Barnhart, lVIrs. Bittner and Mr. LaVigIne as advisors, began in the late fall to prepare the yearbook for the press. Many long hours were spent in planning and scheduling pictures and in gathering infor- mation from the clubs and classes for write- ups. During this time the Business Staff was hard at work Collecting' ads from the sur- rounding area. The two staffs combined work with fun by having a bake sale, the proceeds of which went for a joint party. After all our hard work We are proud of the results. This annual was made pos- sible with the help and Co-operation of everyone on the staff. J. Reynolds, liditorg Mrs. Bittnerg M Stanton, Bus. Manager SITTING: J. Reynolds, M Jones. J DR. GUY HARTMAN Supervising Principal The first shown measure of achievement in high school is usually determined by the grades on the report card. This is important. However, if book learning and intellectual achievement become an only measure, then our high school program has failed. Your behavior, your ideals and your group conduct are far more important than mere grade achievement. It is our fondest hope that you may develop a keener sense of discrimination in the everyday habit of honesty, courtesy and beautiful living at its best. By so doing, you will become a loyal citizen in your com- munity, a worthy member of your family and a pillar in your church. To this end you have our best wishes and most earnest devotions. nerstown Borough, met monthly in the school library. This year along with handling all the regular problems that a school of this size has, the wheels were set in motion for the planned addition to make a bigger and better high school. The actual work on this project which will include a new auditorium and new classrooms will begin this summer. We sincerely thank these men and wo- men for the work that they have done to promote our education. SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME MR. JAMES B. DIETZ Principal From the merriest celebration to the most solemn ceremony, there is appropriate music to inhance the occasion. Through it the individual, alone or as a member of a group, can give expression to his every mood and feeling. It enriches many of the school's activities. It is a language, a pleasure, and a leavening for a satisfactory living. As such it rightfully holds a prominent place in our high school curriculum. All junior high students are enrolled in required music courses. However, a large number elect junior band. In the senior high, approximately two thirds of our students are enrolled in elective vocal and instrumental groups. Such high interest and participation is unusual. It is hoped this interest will continue and that with additional facilities, it can be expanded and more fully satisfied. Our aim is to offer additional music electives that will further aid in disclosing individual ability, provide more opportunities for development of talent, promote a greater love for music and a fuller appreciation of its versatility, and to give stronger emphasis to the joy and satisfaction of cooperative music effort. A special note of thanks goes to Mrs. Leah S. Martin, our school secretary. Mrs. Martin is always on the job in Mr. Dietz's otlice keeping the accounts of all the clubs in order, typing the daily bulletins, or any of the many other jobs that must be done to keep the school office running smoothly. aaa t ,..:-1 '91 y :lieu Q13 T 4 X Run! Reynolds -H any of 7'ou2 eau Together In all the hustle and happiness of grad- uation let's take a little time. as the class of 1951, to look back over the song in four parts that we have been composing together for the past four years. The fall of 1947 found us entering the Boswell High School as complete greenies. By the middle of the term our first shyness had worn off and then the walls of the gym echoed to the shouts of Swing your partner and Promenade . No, those weren't hill billies but our class square dance, our first real project. Next we see ourselves as Sophomores, busy and anxious to get through our second year. Now that we knew the students and faculty it was easier to get into the swing of things. The months passed quickly until it was spring, which brought the crowning glory of the year, our Spring Hop and a lot of fun for everyone. At the close of school that year it was hard to realize that we had actually reached the halfway point of our goal. L For three short months we relaxed and had fun and then the ring of class bells called us back again. As Juniors we had even more fun to look forward to. As our first event in the fall we had a Sadie Hawkins Dance, giving the girls a chance to pick their dates for the evening. Daisy Mae and Lil' Abner were represented by Doris Begley and Eugene Burock. To celebrate Valentine's Day we held a Heart Hop. The year drew to a hil- arious close with the Junior class play, Three Blind Dates. With the arrival of our class rings, the ordering of name cards and graduation an- nouncements, and the completion of our an- nual we realized our goal-Seniors at last! With hard work, we produced a successful Senior play, The Green Vine. This was followed by the annual Football Dance with Lewis Maust as King and Lois Fritz as Queen. To represent our class at the Maple Festival in April we chose Phyllis Anderson. No senior year is complete without a prom. To us our senior dinner dance was the last perfect note. Now the music of the finale begins and the class of 1951 will soon be taking its last bow. We, as a class, are proud of our per- formance. In scholarship, in sports, in friend- ships we have tried to produce a clear and perfect record. As students we will never return to J. B. J. but we will never forget it nor our years of fun and work together no matter where our different vocations may lead us. We will look back often and re- member our song of four years together. eniou . . . SKY msky p a good class down, and our peppy Juniol y proof of this. This liy ely group is well represented n every phase of school activities. The Student Louncil was guided through a successful year with Juniors James Maust as piesident and James Zimmerman as vice-president. In addition to having members on every team in sports, the school b-ind was led by Junior majorettes Elfrieda Sadowsky, ancy' Lee Taylor, and Mary Alice Roberts. Varsity cheerleaders, Wanda Barclay Nancy Burke, Shirley Clark, and Eleanor Wil- liams boosted team morale at every game. We were also well represented in such important school activities as the newspaper and annual. As a complete class our activities opened early in the year with a Sock Hop, a Skating Party at Skateland in February and ended with the Junior Prom and the Annual Junior Play in the spring. To raise our financial status, we made and sold cookies during the Christmas vacation and also sold ice cream and milk every day' to the students and faculty at lunch time. Our efforts during the year were helped and guided by Miss Soisson, Mr. Krupnik and Mr. Kerekes, our advisors. Now our Junior year is fast drawing to a close and We are ready' to proudly take our places as Seniors next year. 26 I.:-:FT T0 RIGHT! G. Gavel, A Beahr, M. J. Keyser, R. Bit- tlehrun, V. Dedik, C. This year for the first time the Junior High School sent representatives to the Student Council of the school. One was selected from each section of our grade. Our representatives were Ronald Brougher, Donald Snoberger, Deanna Gindlesperger and Eugene Roberts. Although divided into four sections We work together well as a class unit. The annual Eighth grade party showed this. Bonnie Lou Neatrour and David Griffith reigned as King and Queen. Entertainment consisted of a cake walk, a treasure hunt and dancing to a phonograph and juke box. We had lunch planned by the girls in their home ec. class. 7 ff .-9 W 'WP x mtl I n 4 P1 cc L IJ I indlupu LI U Q NH Llllg L K 0 IN 1 rx N I 1 a1 A D311 -X Dalusan o I1 Haivu 21111 Fatu A C ast ev Danials S lv. We, the seventh grade, are only starting on the long trail which we hope will eventually lead us to the completion of our high school career. Although we are only starting in, we are already proud of our school and hope that we will be able to at least live up to the good example set us by the upper classmen, and, if possible, to do even better. Sending representatives to the Student Council has given us an even better understanding of what is expected of us in our school career. Four members were selected, one from each section of our grade: Yvonne Shirey, John Griffith, Charles Neuhoff, and Joe Bertolini. t'To look forward to final success is our motto. ABSENT: S. In our meetings we had problem discussions led by different members of the group. This club is set up not just for entertainment, it's true purpose is to help others. One of the main activities of the year was the Christmas Tea for the teachers, complete with a Santa Claus who had a gift for each teacher. On Parent's Day the Tri-Hi-Y registered and directed the guests during the day and at the end of the day served tea to the teachers and parents in the library. Hungry students enjoyed the hot dog sales at lunch time provided by the Tri-Hi-Y. A Valentine Tea and a full-length movie for our school as- sembly rounded out our activities. For our faithful service we were awarded, in com- petition with other schools, a gavel inscribed J.B.J. Tri-Hi-Y. In May we closed the year's activities with our annual banquet. With the close of this successful year we look ahead next year to one just as good as or perhaps better than this year. LEFT T0 RIGHT: M. For-adm-i, D. Sheftic, Z. Geisbert, D. Willison, J Beal, A. During their regular meetings in club period each week the members prac- ticed pantomines, monologues and skits, under the supervision of Miss Sprowls, to be given for their fellow members and for assembly programs. Their outstanding achievement was pre- sented during the annual Christmas program in the form of an excellent interpretation of an adaptation of Dicken's famous A Christ- mas Carol. With a mutual interest in acting and a desire to study and present fine drama, the members of this club spent the year having fun and learning at the same time. If you'd Cale to argue this just step in the Home Ec. room any club period and wx hat you smell and eat there will convince you. Here vou d find a dozen junior and senior boys under the supervision ot Miss Ogline busily working over the Home Ec stove and around the tables. Starting out with such simple things as candy and cookies, these chefs eventually become experts of such delicious foods as cream puffs, doughnuts and upside-down cakes. The best part of all comes at the end of the period when the boys are allowed to eat what they've made Strange as it may seem no cases of food poisoning or even lndlges tion have been reported. Even if none of them choose to make a career of cooking, these boys have had good training both on cooking and in cleaning up and washing dishes Girls if y0u'd like a ready trained husband the members of this club are: Jess Engle, Glen Brown, Robert Bittner Ronald Bambling, Anthony Neri, Dale Plummer Anthony Magazzu, Vernon Spangler, Jack Fultz, Wavne Querry Kenneth Gowarty, and Eugene Hemminger. uniot gtouiei KNITTING CLUB The Knitting Club, organized by Mrs. Thomas, has as its purpose teaching the Junior High girls how to knit. The girls enter the club knowing little or nothing about knitting, but after a few weeks they are all busy turning out socks, sweaters and mittens for either their own use or for gifts. Al- though they don't produce perfect work at first, practice and more practice means that at the end of the year they will have become skillful at making things they will use anil enjoy for a long time. ARTS AND CRAFT The Arts and Crafts Club, under the direction of Miss Barkley, is an organization made up only of seventh and eighth graders. This club affords its members entertainment as well as being beneficial to them. Learning to paint with water colors, to make felt lapel pins, and to make stuffed toys were their main achievements for the year. The club made posters which they dis- tributed throughout the school. Yes, those members of the band really work to provide music for school activities and other events. Led by its attractive group of majorettes behind the drum major, the band turned out in its best styles to march at every football game-rain or shine. After football season the band settled down to more serious music in preparation for the annual spring concert in May. J. B. J. band was represented at Central Western Band which was held in Somerset, February 1-3. Mary Jones, Carolyn Holsopple, Anthony Neri, Shirley Patrick, Barbara Schmucker, Marjorie Stanton, Robert Schmucker, and Eleanor Williams were chosen to represent J. B. The forty-five members of this group have made rapid progress throughout the year and many are now ready to take over the vacant seats left by the seniors. Both bands are directed by Mr. Kistler. The time and effort he puts forth are apparent in the precision marching and lively music of the bands. 46 ,. , , Aff - . Krause, Mr, Pike. F. Fotta, D. Saylor, M. Phillips, ll. Roberts, S. Stuart, G. Ncidcr- mcier. The J. B. J. basketeers closed their 1950- 1951 season with a record of nine wins and eight losses. The season started out with a 47-32 victory over a fast-moving alumni quintet. In scheduled competition we got off to a slow start by dropping the next two games to Conemaugh Township and Meyers- dale. Recovering quickly, the boys took the next four games with Stonycreek, Somerset Township, Bedford and Meyersdale. Their Hit it, Boswell l 57 L victorious rampage was stopped by a slick five from Shade Township. The biggest dis- appointment of the year was the 65-37 defeat handed the Bears by Somerset Eagles. The boys were never able to completely re- cover from this stroke of bad luck and, al- though they won several games, the season as a whole was on the downward trail. At the end of the regular season we entered the District Five Flass A Basketball Tournament. The Bears were scheduled to play Somerset in the first game, but due to a forfeit, went on to beat Berlin 52-47. Going on to the finals, in which they met Windber, the boys were definitely out-classed. Fighting hard every quarter, the Bears were still unable to hold back Windber and the final score tallied a 63-37, leaving us with second place in the tournament. The team lost three valuable players this year in Martin Jarosick, Albert Bamb- ling, and Bob McLarney. 'tBoo was named on the All-County Basketball team and com- pleted the season with 330 points. Returning to the team next year are seven veterans with valuable experience. They are: Juniors, Bob Bittner, Ed Mincek, Ed Baraniakg Sophomores, George Phillips, Steve Bene- dict, Freshmen, Ed Maurer and Fred Shaffer. With this year's record and the boys' good showing for the past year, the prospects for next year's team promise to be bigger and better than they have been for several years. 7-ootfaff MR, TOUCHDOWN J. S. got into full swing on August 15 when the boys with Coaches Szewczyk, O'Connor and Pike journeyed to Camp Harmony. There they underwent a week of rugged physical training. Due to the fact that there was only one senior letterman the squad was made up mostly of Juniors. Although they played hard every game the boys lacked the experience needed to come out victorious. Leaving the field the boys proved to the student body that they could be good sports even though they lost. Because of an injury suffered during practice, Lewis Maust, captain of the team, was hospitalized. The boys played the re- mainder of the season without the services of Lewis. J. B. J. gained one berth on the all- County football team this year with the election of Edward Mincek by six Somerset County coaches. Ray Speicher was given an honorable mention. Dave Horner will be returning to the squad next year to defend his district champion title but for Fred Thomas and Bob Vish this marked the close of their high school wrestling career.
