Hicwv little is the return for them except the knowledge that their endeav- crs have nolt been irn vain. Therefore. in 'this opening section of our book we pay loving tribute to our loyal devoted pareannts who are putting fortih suoh. noble efforts thalt the road to our goal may be smofvither and easier to travel. The unfnlterlnz trust and sacrifice, love and de votion of our parents for us, make the honor and the duty whieh we owe to them fur outweigh their's to us. They have nlaeed their confidence and ziven us their best. Surely we can do no less than honor them and their trust by striving to make the most of our ability, so that we may ut- tnin the sucvess toward which they have guided us. But all of us were intenlt on making the best of this venture and we began forthwith, n1otwint.hstand- ing the hazing we neceived alt' the ready hands of the Sophs, which was calculated to take some of the cock-sureness out off us. If anything, lt turned out just the opposite fnom what was expected, for we were just as lively as ever. We were ready for anytlh-ing that came along, nlot even excepting 'the finals which we bowled over emerging full fiedgiedl Sopho- mores. The second year began calmly. Calmly, if that word mleans :to pur- sue the elusive Frosh-, get and haze himg outside of this everything else was serene enough for us. Now, as we were better acqulainrtned with the teachers and ourselves we got along very well, not only in studies but also in other activities. We came into piossoessiofnl of the Blalskehball banner and later received anotlher in debating. Yes we were a lively class and not even the finals, that nemesis of many a promising stude, could hold us down. As we passed out of school for our vacaticn, tihe world sta-red agog at us, for were we not Juniors rightly proclaimed so by the Powers that Be? The third year was a repetition of the preceding year. We remained champs both in Basketball and debating, besides pultihing some men on the gridiron who were lucky enough, or rather their ability was recog- nized. We also backed up the other school projects putting on a play, Go Slow Mary, for the benefit of the library. The fourth year began as all the rest, only -trhat it was marked by more work and the realization that it would be our last and! therefore should be marked! by tlhe best of work, setting an example for the under- classmenf to follow, which we faithfully believe we did. All this time our enrollment was steadily decreasirg unllail in our last year we had but a scanzt. 23. Nevertheless we kept. :cn and now as we are slowly being put on the shelf of time and other classes will crime to take our places, theme always will be a warm spot in each heart of the class of '28 for Boswell High and the work w'h.ic'h i't did for urs. IO 1 lHli9 .,. 1iFfi..C0LE?U?X1.. i lls Senior Class Plays. The Senior Class of '28 has given -three plays during the last two years. Two of these were cme-act plays, Squarintg it wilthu the Boss, and Not Quite Such a Goose. These being the first one-aclt plays to be given in the history of our school. Tihese plays made quite a hit in our community, for they were short, snappy, and' full of humer. Squar- lng it with the Boss was one of these real life plays in which the home life was v-ery well represented. Jimmy Greening, a- young lru's-band-, and Bet.h, his wife, had just returned home from their vacaltlionl, and to their surprise as well as indignation they fcunld thart a letter was wiaitilng them from eaeh uf their aunts, saying tlhat they would aarzrive therlel that. evenl- ing. This was sa terrible blow to the house of the Glreenings, for hofw could they enltevtain their two aunts who had' been bitter enemies for years. But they decided to make the best of the situation when the aunts arrived. Late in tlhe afternoon, w'h'en the Greenings were making hurried preparations ftgr the aunts, the telephone frang, Hello, Hello. Is this -the Greening residence? Yes, yes, I am Mr. Greening's boss and Mrs. Greening, tell Jimmy that I expect to dine with Ihim tonight. This was more than Beth could stand. Werenitl their two aunts enlough? Jimmy is surprised tae hear tlh-at 'his boss is coming and after a few minutes thought he tells Betlh how he came to get a. raise in his salary. So to carry out the false hood they borrow the neigth.boar's boy and dress him up to represent the baby. Between the Lhearty laughs df the audience and the untangiing of tihfe mystery of the aunts hatred, we find' Mr. Dunn, Jimmy's boss, being the cause of the a.unt's quarrel. Also Mr. Dunn doesn't remember of giving Jimmy -a raise and only wanlts to give him a larger to-ne, but Jimmy believing that ftqhe boss wants U01 knlorw about the baby is in an awful predicame-nft, and is fcrced to tell the tsruftih. Not Quite Such a Goose was also a real to life play where the only boy does just the oppcsite of what his big sis wanvts him sto. He will eat huckleberry pudlding which makes his mouth. black, and tease her about her boy friend, who dresses in tlh-e latest styles. He was a real althlete when it came to baseball. He dleliglrted in going with the rough crowd in spite of all his mother and sister could say err do. He was also a wom- an hater, unatil the right girl came along, then his ways changed consider- ably, and vefry quickly. The characters in tih-is play were very well chos- en and did their parts very successfully. Our Junior play, Go Slow Mary , was one off tlrtlse plays where tihe young husband believed that his wife had life boo easy anndl by -her idle- ness was falling in love with his friend, also his yioung wifet having work- ed in the business world before marriage, is inclined to believe that he also has life too easy and that gelttinig a job was a very easy matter. There are in, existe-naoe today several mirrors, known as Upside-down Mirrors ' and when people look into them they always see themselves dif- ferent from what they are. I had the privilege of lovoeking into onne of these mirrors and of seeing reflections of members of our class. Imagine my surprise at seeing Joe Plriskie tall and tlhinl, sober as a judge, riding in his son's holy automobile. Dorothy Feese witih hair combed up tight and fasten-ed' in a lcnoft o-n top of her headg wtetaring large spectacles and white apron teaching three little chicks to pick up all their crumbs and not let any lying around. Angeline Clrvimone about three and one half feet tall anrd stout trying on a flapper type dress in Ra.lphft0un's exclusive clothing stone. And Mike DeLuca eloquent by delivering la ser- mon on Evil are the Ways of Man, to an audience 'half frightened and ready to run if he becamne mo-re earnest. The next persons I saw iln t-he mirror were just as astonishing but I was past being surprised. There was Mary Louise Mostoller with blue eyes and blond hair trying to darken them by always keeping her rooms dafrloeinedl by pulling down Itahe blinds and turning on the electric lights. Robert Glessner putting Shay Oo-mb on his hair to maloe it curl and carrying a snuff box to keep from sneezing while listening to Lawyer Crusko as he argued the case of Mary Cabidzura in cctu-rt. She was sueing Josephine Hayes for flying her air- plane over 'her garden and scaring the beans so badlly they would not come up. John Zimmerman was a little boy wearing rompers and playing hide and seek with Nina Para also a little girl with wind- blown bob and wearing bright colored ribbons an -her long black tresses. But even more shocking Robert Walteis wearing green ties and singing, My Wild Irish Rose, to a Spanish sefnofrfita. Ansd. Clair Fulton trying to teach a mule not to kick by tying his fnclnlt feet -ttagethielr. Charles Walk- er, his hired -hanwd, said it was nut any use to tie his Hack feet because the mule would kick with botfh and it would hurt tw-ice as mfudhi. There was Ewing Swop-e standing in fnont of a garage selling purple gasoline with pink stripes and his bookkeeper, Davie Griffith, who balanced his books so well there was a difference cgf 573 pin heads. And Idea Mlae Barnlrart and Rosella Kennedy were making mudpies and wearing pink sunhats with caps over their ears. And still more surprises! Opal Driggs had become quite tall and was assistant cashier in Bunnyville Carrot: Bank of which Millard Gardner was the largest depositor of Let-tauce Leaves. Harry Walker was an artist and painted the stripes on the zebra's blacks, while Kenneth Arisman mixed the painlts by turning them upside down. The other officers were: Lieutenant Selma Lepley, CSecretaryJ and Sargent Esther Gardner fTreasure'rJ. After a short period of sailing, a number of our crew felt that they could' not weather the storms, so they stopped at various ports albmg the way. Our leading social event this year was the Junior Banquet which resulted in a huge success. This year, we had five representatives on the football s,,uad, three receiving letters. The next number on the program will be the history of the class of 1930. i On Septenrbler 3, 1926, seventy-three Freslimelnf gathered in chapel to be seen for the first: time in one-grofup. At first they seemed rather green and shy, but they soon learned to hoe their own row. The class was the largest that ever entered Boswell and immediately they set a goal and are still s.triving for that goal. A few weeks passed anfdl they again as- sembled for Uheir first class meeting. Atlterr each one havinlg' their say as to who they wanted to fill the varicfus class offices, they finally decidled on these few to fill the positions: President Villa Marie Letcher, Vice Presit denlt Franlc Phillips, Secretary Isabell Ba-ll, Assistant Secretary Anma Ves- sick, and Treasurer Charles Stufft. According to t.he way the class was run, the officers proved themselves efliciemtt. This class was well represented in' athletics with Frank Phillips mak- ing the varsity in football. Before the Freshmen had time to turn around, they found 'that the term was ended and they were nvo lqnger Freshmen, but sophisticated Sophomores. Vacation soon passed by and on September 5,'1927, they again as- sembled to chapel to find themselves a little more dignified than ever be- fore. As Soplhomores, they were still striving for tihe gvoal that they set when they were Freshmen. This year they chcse as their class oflicers: President Villa- Marla Letcher, Vice President Mfqnros Brant, Secretary Dcfrtfhy Speicher, amd Treasurer John: Statler. This year the class was well represented in all the school activities, in the orchestra, football, boy's and girl's basketball, readeing contest and the school play. The Sophomores are striving this year to become full fledged Juniors next yeaer and every one is sure that if they kzsep striving as lthey have been they sune will be. Station B. H. The one receiving first lmomiors also received an hlcmior cup for the schiool he or she nepresenfted. The aim of these contests is tao help stufdfenits expness themselves more clearly, to train young pecple to think on their feet, and to encour- age public speaking. Sudh, training is invaluable in laitierr life. The rule.s for judging the readings are the same in both the Coun-ty and Prelimin- ary Contests. Delivery, voice, stage presence, and effect ocn audience are the determining points used in chlescking the standing of eadh contestant. The Orchestra is cme of the many activities exercised in thie Bosweli High School. It is as important a project as any activity, onnly in a diff- erent way. It had its origin in 1923, under the direction and supervision of Mrs. F. A. Miller. She proved to tihe people of Boswell that the high schoc-I had students of talent, and that these talents Sihlilllld be exercised to such an extent as to give to the public something di'fi'er1efnt than the same daily routine. The orchestra proved to be a gneat success under Mrs. F. A. Milefr and was taken up by her the following helrm. Each year the orchestra lost a few of its members t'h-rough graduation, only to be replaced by other students entering High School. The next year the su- pervision and directing fell into the able hands of Mr. Chas. Weed, a teacher of science in the local school. The progress of the orchestra, under Mr. Weed, was greatly appreciated by the public. The following term Mr. Weed again directed tfhe orchestra. This year We have a di. rector who is a v-esry compete-nt man and who is known throughout Johns- town, Boswell and vicinity. He is Mr. M. Dobbs, am instructor and teach- er of the violin. The orchestra, dlespite the handicap of llcsin-g quite a few members by graduatien, is progressing very rapidly. The orchestra music consists of Marches, Characteristic Marches, Waltzes, Medleys, Sefrenadles, Polkas, Overat-ures, Baroarolls and ltllie like. The music is bought from J. W. Pepper and Som of Philaidelplhiia. These people carry a large line of c,rch:esttrational music. The orchestira has played at all class plays, at dlefbartes, parent and teacher meetings, and at some special meetings. Its progress up to this time is wonderful, and we hope ift continues to progress in Ptlhe same speed in years to come. ' D. M. Somerset On December 15, 1927 we again took up the task of finishing the athletic schedule for the year 1927-28. Losing all of our varsity team by graduation' last year, wie had to build an enltire new team. After a few nights of practice, Coach Wolfe found it necessary to eliminate a few fellows who had come ouft to try their skill in basloertball. Few sohlools can boast of such pep and sports niansfhip. But Boswell students always have shown: that undying lovve and loyalty for their Alma Matter. Tfheir cheering squads cannot be ex- celled. The development of cfurr team was' so progressive thats we scheduled two games before 'the Christnrals vacation. After vacation our boys came back strong. We began our season with a bang! Our felloqws were won- ders. Their shooting, pass and team work never was surpassed. Their co-operation was such that the team was one. No some could be honor- ably menltiofned without bringing them all in. Under the guidance of Miss Sanner, our ever efficient coach, our girls blossomed forth in an undefeated season. Their co-operaition and friend- liness gained for them a name that brings honor to our school. In the past couple years they have not had a very successful season, for practice could next be at a time to suit all, and therefore could not have really grind results. But this year they have improrved very much. They have fought bravely, practiced hard, and dame ou't surprisingly tip-top. We may say surprisingly, fflr the material which we had also was a very small amount. Nevertheless, it characterizes Boswell, for B. H. S. is not noted for its' quantity, but rather for its' quality.
