In this book we have tried to capture all of these memories for you. Things that were so important to us when they happened: the football team’s wins and close losses, Homecoming, the teachers and classes we shared, the school spirit, the buses and the 2:15 traffic jams, the club meetings and projects, the horror of exams and the joy of having substitute teachers, the basketball and the baseball games, graduation ... but mainly, the close triends and acquaintances we all had. We need reminders, for time is a continuing flow, constant- ly changing things as we know them now. People change, often for the better and sometimes for the worse, but we as individuals can do nothing to prevent these changes. We can, however, remember. The joy of gaining new friends or the sorrow of losing few may in the annals of time be lost, but our friends are probably the most important things we have and should never be forgotten. This is the purpose of this book, to enable us to look back and remember all of the people and events that somehow affected our lives. Whether good or bad, joyful or sorrowful, these memories should never be lost. ARE FOREVER MVM; ALMA MATER FROM THE HALLS OF JENKINS HIGH SCHOOL COMES THIS SOLEMN VOW, ONWARD, ONWARD IS OUR MOTTO; YOU HAVE TAUGHT US HOW. ALMA MATER, WE ARE PLEDGING LOVE AND LOYALTY. After graduating from HVJ Mr. Stewart continued his education at Arm- strong State College and Georgia South- ern College where he received his BS de- gree in education. Mr. Stewart served as a teacher at both Shuman Middle School and Savannah Country Day School before joining the military. After finishing his term in the Army, he came back to Savannah and was on staff at Bartlett Middle School and Savannah High School. For three years Mr. Stewart was principal at Myers Middle School. As principal of HVJ, Mr. Stewart initiat- ed several changes that benefited the en- tire student body. His main goal was for the students to learn in an atmosphere that was both educational and enjoyable. 18 PRINCIPAL ABOVE: Conferences occupy a good deal of Mr Stewart’s time. In addition, a group of part-time maids sent by the Board of Education came in daily to help keep HVJ in good order. 26 MAINTENANCE MUNCH MANIA The school cafeteria at HVJ was es- sential to the well-being of the student body last year, offering three different well-balanced lunches for the mighty Warriors. The new self-serve salad bar was a big hit throughout the year. Special meals were prepared for holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. The lunchroom operated effectively under the management of Mrs. Kaigler and her assistant Ms. Dickerson. J CAFETERIA 27 GETTING IT TOGETHER This past year, the Jenkins High School PTSA concerned itself mainly with the at- titude of parents and students towards the school. The goal was to inform par- ents about what was going on around the school and to encourage them to volun- teer to help in some areas. By planting Azaleas around the school, the PTSA hoped that students would take more pride in the school's appearance. Also, they conducted a workshop on shoplifting to benefit both students and parents. The 1980-81 PTSA officers were Mrs. Betty Dasher-President. Mr. Bazemore- Vice President, Mrs. Ella Stell-Secretary. and Mr. Ward Powers-Treasure. Each day of the week of October 13-17 was celebrated with a special event: Mon- day-50’s Day; Tuesday-Squaw Day; Wednesday-Warrior Day; Thursday-Char- acter Day; Friday-Red and Gray Day. The most enjoyable day was considered to be Character Day. because of the unique costumes worn by many of the students. To add to the excitement of Red and Gray Day. a Homecoming Parade was arranged for after school. At three p.m. on Friday, a caravan of forty-eight deco- rated cars left the HVJ parking lot. With the Senior Class President Jerry Gray leading the way. the parade honked and yelled its way on the fory-five minute route through downtown Savannah. This past year the more adventurous spirits at HVJ could be found at the meet- ings of the Outings Club. The club, under the guidance of Mr. Hugh Golson and Ms. Marsha Flisnick went on several weekend camping trips during the course of the school year. Members were required to provide their own food, sleeping bags, and tents. Since most of the trips were river excursions, the cost of hiring the canoes necessary was split among the members. UPPER. OUTINGS CLUB 93 IN THE FUTURE The Future Homemakers of America Club were advised by Mrs. Wright and Ms. Seckinger during this past year. The club sponsored many exciting activities for members and the community. The club provided some underprivileged fam- ilies with baskets of food at Thanksgiving. A Christmas party was given in honor of those in their “golden years.” Parent and teacher appreciation was also an impor- tant consideration. There were other ac- tivities that students participated in during the year. Many speakers came to talk to the club on important subjects-crime prevention and teenage pregnancy. The goal of the organization was to help youth accept a role in society through home economics education in areas of personal growth and family life. Vocational preparation and community involvement were also stressed. UPPER: Front Row: Michelle Dukes-Vice-President. Valerie James-President. Back Row. Mrs. Wright- Advisor, Carol Johnson-Historian. Helmly the club had a productive year. Food baskets were distributed to the underprivileged at Thanksgiving. During the Christmas season, coloring books and crayons were given to the Children’s Ward at Memorial Hospital and place cards were made for the patients’ food trays. Several other projects were spon- sored by the club. Members attended two conferences this past year-Region 8 Mini in Baxley, Ga., and the State Leadership Confer- ence in Atlanta. VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) was a program to help students to develop leadership skills and to accept the authority of their employers. The stu- dents held positions in technical, industri- al and health-related businesses. VICA was an enthusiastic group of stu- dents this past year. In November they challenged VOCA to a football game. The results of that game was a tied score of 0- 0. The members of VICA also designed and manufactured picnic tables for the students’ enjoyment. A few of these were skating party, a cookout and a football game against VICA. VOCA also participated in a voca- tional craft fair in March; this was a region contest in which various members put their talents to use. Among their many activities were two formal induction ceremonies-one in the fall and the other in the spring. The NHS also sponsored Teacher Appreciation Day-a day designated to recognize and award teachers for their hard work and dedication. The NHS’s main activity, how- ever, was Honors Night when students throughout the school were recognized for their scholastic achievement during the school year. The Honor Society sold candy to help raise funds for these events. The NHS’s main purpose, however, was to recognize scholastic ability and leadership qualities at our school. This large membership can be attributed to the kindness and gentleness of its advisor Ms. Gary. The Spanish Club did not restrict its membership to those who took only a year or two of Spanish but was open to any student who had taken Spanish at Jenkins. The enjoyment the Spanish Club brought to its members was immense. The club planned many exciting events throughout the year. The Club took a field trip to visit the Barba Negra Ship. The team was unable to get a good placement in the region because of its lack of participants in the field events. However, in the city meets the team did quite well. Bringing home top honors at the banquet was Ronald Wilson. Wilson made his second trip to the state meets this past year, placing first in the 100-yard dash and 220-yard dash. He ran an incredible 9.7 in the 100-yard dash and an astounding 22.8 in the 220-yard dash. Although Wil- son graduated last spring, Coach Gadson is looking forward to this upcoming year with optimism. He hopes to have more boys come out for field events. ABOVE: Most Valuable Player. Despite their re- cord of 8 wins and 12 losses, the Warriors played each game with energy and enthu- siasm. They fought through the entire nine innings in every game. Most valuable player Chris Mahany led the team in pitching, while Chris Thomp- son led the team in hitting. The Warriors opened the season with a loss to perennially powerful Northside Warner Robbins. The final count on the game was 28-13. Randall Mitchell. Craig Wallace. Gary Crawford and Jeff Beasley provided the heroics for a losing game. The Warriors came back the next week to crunch a helpless Windsor squad 26-0. Senior running back Comer Williams was in the spotlight as he gained over 200 yards of the total offense. The entire War- rior defense put forth a superb effort in this victory. The Warriors opened up their first region game with a narrow escape. The Warriors slipped by the Beach Bull- dogs 7-6. Comer Williams scored the Warriors’ lone touchdown. Beach had a chance to win but saw that chance dimin- ish as Chris Williams intercepted the try at a two-point conversion. VARSITY FOOTBALL 125 DEFENSE HOLDS UP For the next game the Warriors traveled to Brunswick to face the Brunswick Pi- rates. The Pirates came out on the short end of a 25-19 victory for the Warriors. The next week the Warriors took on the Wayne County Yellow Jackets. The War- riors played brilliantly. Robert Branch broke loose for two scores to pace the offense. The defense continuously shut down the Yellow Jackets’ offense. Wayne County’s vain attempt at a touchdown was intercepted at the two-yard line by senior defensive back Craig Wallace. This was the Yellow Jackets’s only real threat to the Warriors' game. However, they did score a touchdown off a fumble by a War- rior running back in the end zone. The final score was Warriors 23, Wayne Coun- ty 7. The Warriors’ defense accounted for 9 points in that victory. ABOVE: Seniors 1980-81. First Row Lerrone Cot- ton. Craig Wallace. Jodey Martin. The team went 1-4 the second half and finished the year on an embarassing upset loss to Johnson High School 2-0. The Warriors fell victim to Tompkins High School 8-6 in a game that could have clinched the War- riors a play-off berth. This was followed by a Homecoming loss to Savannah High School 12-10. The Warriors next opposi- tion was the Benedictine Cadets. This was the team’s last chance to make the play-offs; the Warriors fumbled their hopes away. Fumbling proved to be the biggest difference in this past year’s team and last year’s. The defense played bril- liantly the majority of the year, keeping the opposition from getting in the end zone three times. ABOVE: First Row: Rufus Smalls. Darren Wing- grove. Harold Showalter. The team was young and inexperienced but had the will to fight. The team fought to raise an 0-4 record to a 2-4 one with two spectacular wins over Richard Arnold and Savannah High. The members of the team proved to them- selves, with the victories over two tough teams, that they had the ability to develop into one of the finest teams for HVJ’s future. 130 JV FOOTBALL 131 GIRLS ON TOP 132 GIRLS BASKETBALL ABOVE LEFT: The 1980 Lady Warriors. ABOVE BIGHT: Concentrating on a basket UPPER: Going up for two. Under the excellent guidance of head Coach Tom Miller and Roland James the girls’ basketball experienced something very new to them-winning! The 1980-81 girls’ basketball team was the best the school has ever had. To go along with their fine season the Lady Warriors were crowned as Christmas Tournament champions at the Windsor tournament. Lisa Owens was the most valuable player, and Teresa Campbell was also named to the all-tournament team. The Lady War- riors were basically a young team, thus in the future HVJ fans can look for more fine girls’ basketball. The 1980-81 Warrior basketball team proved to be the best team the school has had in recent years. The team won 12 straight games, posted 10 straight home wins, boosted a 11-1 record and thus claimed the regular season region crown. Coach B.J. Gadson’s troops entered the year expecting to be the team to beat. The Warriors returned four starters and two reserves off of last year’s 16-7 squad. Among the returning starters were senior forwards Donald Wade and David Mor- gan. Senior Randall Mitchell returned as the man in the middle and junior Gino Groover to the gaurd spot. Gary Crawford and Craig Wallace returned as the other Warrior veterans. Those six had 19 years of experience- each playing at least 3 years of basketball at HVJ. Donald Wade, a return of four varsity seasons, played superb ball for the Warriors the whole year. Wade was a dominant force in driving the Warriors to the top. David Morgan, noted primarily in his first two seasons as a rebounding and defensive specialist, also provided some offensive outbursts down the stretch. GO FOR IT The 1980-81 soccer team under the direction of Coach Joseph Sanfilippo dis- played superior skill similar to that of the past year’s team. In the Warriors’ pre- season game they were defeated in a close match with Johnson. The Warriors then went into the regular season, running up a 6-0 record and beating teams from Windsor Forest, Country Day, Benedic- tine, Beach, and Savannah High. The win- ning streak was broken, however, in a 3-2 game against the arch-rival team from Johnson. The team leaders this past year were Terry Takats for the offense and Matt Bai- ley for the defense. 139 HVJ ’81 SENIOR CLASS Senior Class Officers. Front Row Comer Williams-Corresponding Secretary. Monday-Saturday Call (912)355-3690 investing in the Future. One of Union Camp’s strengths over the years has been the awareness for the need to upgrade existing facilities. No where is this more apparent than at the company's Savannah Plant. Capital expenditure at Savannah in the 1970 s approached $250 million. This significant investment has kept our business viable and competitive. Not surprisingly, the emphasis on modernization and increased efficiency continues in this new decade. The largest capital job ever undertaken at Savan- nah, a $91 million power boiler construction project, has been announced and will be completed in 1982. The coal-burning boiler will reduce our dependency on fuel oil by the equivalent of a million barrels a year. Again, Union Camp is doing more of what it has done so successfully in the past — staying ahead of the game. Mrs J J Amari and Mr Wallace Hayes, who both worked well be- yond the call of duty, counting money, keeping re- cords. and mostly giving much needed incentive To Mr Danny Scott and the Josten’s American Year book Company, who answered many, many ques tions about how to do this and that To Mr Stan Ballenger and the people at Bryn Alan Studios, not only for the photographic equipment needs of the staff, but also tor making trips here to Jenkins for picture taking On ten different occasions, seven dif- ferent photographers spent a total of fifteen days here taking more pictures than a family would take during a lifetime Over 4.500 pictures were taken, all trying to capture some memories Most of my thanks goes out. however, to this past year’s entire staff Without then there would be no yearbook The staff had many people on it who worked very hard to reach our goal, and they were the finest group of people anyone could ever work with Many times this past year tempers have flared, fights have broken out, much money was spent, three our of five deadlines were missed, and as I look back I sometimes wonder how this book was ever put together But this is it. and I hope it meets with your approval So to you. the student body and mostly the 313 graduating seniors of the class of 1981, I dedicate this, the twenty-third volume of SE- QUOYAH. I hope this book serves its purpose in helping you retain those memories of the good times we all shared at HVJ Fditor in chief 230 EDITORS ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS EDITOR’S FAREWELL 231 IN MEMORIAM JONAH GERMAN GEORGE ROVOLIS
