ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE The actor's art consists of making a disciplined instrument from an undisciplined human being. It is a very complex and absurd art which is only possible thanks to the duality of each individual: His profound being and his identity. It is an art which tears the actor apart since, on one hand, he must develop his power of sensibility to the extreme of hysteria, and on the other hand, he must develop through will power a constant self-control. The great diversity of courses and the highly- qualified instructors in the English Department added life to each student's daily schedule. The v courses included those in grammar and sentence structure, creative writing classes, poems and short stories, and college preparatory classes in research and literature. Many teachers tried to break away from the monotonous routine of teaching strictly from the book. Group studies, projects for self-expression and oral presentations didn't quite take the place of the book, but they added a more relaxed atmosphere which enabled a better student-teacher relationship. Under the guidance of Laura Breedlove, head of the English Department, the English teachers at HVJ made English a greatly appreciated subject. 25 UPPER LEFT: What's so funny. Mrs. Whitney? ABOVE LEFT: Mr. Hayes prepares for another busy day at HVJ. ABOVE: Mrs. Davis awaits the arrival of her students.

...AND THE BEAT GOES ON The Music Department at Jenkins was the place to go when feeling down. Everywhere there was a cheerful note and the sound of a comforting melody. Mr. Benjamin Sinkus provided a basis to those students who wanted to develop technique and style in playing band instruments. This included playing at many school functions. Mr. Robert Fennell led the chorus classes to near perfection. The students developed talents and skills that could be useful throughout a lifetime.
