NO MAN IS AN ISLAND John Donne's words, No man is an island, ring especially true in today's world. Though life may seem mechanized and impersonal, we must all realize that we cannot spend our lives isolated from one another. Each individual is a part of the whole, the continent. Hopefully, this volume of the SEQUOYAH will help us recall the closeness in which we lived — and should continue to live — with one another. Our years at HVJ should teach us to appreciate the strength and importance of the people with whom we associate. During our high school years, and indeed throughout our lives, we enjoy exciting and happy times. We meet new friends as we lose old ones; we endure emotional crises as we discover new adventures; and we experience new aspects of life, both pleasant and unpleasant. These phases of life cannot continue without each member of the human race caring and sharing with one another. As this book recalls the year, each person should see the importance in keeping in touch with the others around him. UPPER: A bond that can never be broken. ABOVE: Arm wrestling - a new P.E. class? ABOVE RIGHT: Friends are for keeps. 1

All mankind is of one author, and is one volume: when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated. God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God's hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another . . . No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main . . . John Donne Meditation 17 UPPER: If you want to find out the answers, ask the questions. ABOVE: Crowds have more fun. 6
