A FRIEND IS ALWAYS NEAR 5 All mankind is of one author, and is one volume: when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated. God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God's hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another . . . No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main . . . John Donne Meditation 17 UPPER: If you want to find out the answers, ask the questions. ABOVE: Crowds have more fun. 6 NO MAN IS AN ISLAND John Donne's words, No man is an island, ring especially true in today's world. Though life may seem mechanized and impersonal, we must all realize that we cannot spend our lives isolated from one another. Each individual is a part of the whole, the continent. Hopefully, this volume of the SEQUOYAH will help us recall the closeness in which we lived — and should continue to live — with one another. Our years at HVJ should teach us to appreciate the strength and importance of the people with whom we associate. During our high school years, and indeed throughout our lives, we enjoy exciting and happy times. We meet new friends as we lose old ones; we endure emotional crises as we discover new adventures; and we experience new aspects of life, both pleasant and unpleasant. These phases of life cannot continue without each member of the human race caring and sharing with one another. As this book recalls the year, each person should see the importance in keeping in touch with the others around him. UPPER: A bond that can never be broken. ABOVE: Arm wrestling - a new P.E. class? RIGHT: Football fans include a spirited Woodrow Crosby. 12 PRINCIPAL A WORD FROM THE CHIEF The '79 edition of the SEQUOYAH is not just a calendar of the year's activities and events at HVJ, but it is also a continuing prophecy for the future graduates of our school. Your copy of the SEQUOYAH will serve as a torch to brighten the dim memories of yesterday. It will serve too as a reminder of the often happy times and the sometimes sad days spent at the Home of the Warriors. I am sure Sequoyah, one of the most noble Indians of the South and inventor of the only perfected Indian alphabet, would be proud of the continuing heritage of academic accomplishments that thousands of HVJ graduates have completed, and he would say, Well Done to the continuing life of the Warriors that grace our halls now and will continue to do so in the future. 13 UPPER: Mr. Crosby finds it difficult to make a choice. ABOVE: This is no place to spend your time. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS Assisting Mr. Crosby with discipline and general administration were four important people: Mr. James Spear, Mr. James Jackson, Mr. Earl Berksteiner and Mrs. Kathy O'Neill. Mr. Spear was in charge of the discipline of ninth and eleventh grade students, activities of clubs, fund raising projects, lunchroom patrol and the direction of athletics. Mr. Jackson spent busy days in charge of school busses, distribution of books, field trip arrangements, and after school detention. Mr. Berksteiner dealt mainly with discipline of tenth and twelfth graders, but he enjoyed participating in school activities and working directly with the students. Mrs. Kathy O'Neill worked closely with scheduling, collecting data for the computer, and helping teachers with clerical duties. HVJ would have been dt a loss without the help of these four to keep our school running smoothly. EXTREME UPPER RIGHT: Why did you miss detention for three days? ABOVE RIGHT: get excuses for everything. ABOVE: Coach Spear's favorite pastime. RIGHT: Mrs. O'Neill checks her busy schedule. 14 ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF BEHIND THE SCENES Before each official day began, the secretaries and the school treasurer were preparing for the oncoming day. Mrs. Jane Mell was secretary to Mr. Crosby and general office manager. Mrs. Terrie Mehlhorn was census and transcripts coordinator. Mrs. Brenda Sinclair, who was new to the school last year, was assistant treasurer, assistant to the assistant principals and chief clerical aide to data processing. Mr. John Herrington was our school treasurer, and he handled all the financial problems. This highly trained office staff proved not only to the faculty but also to the students that they cared for everyone and everything centered on Jenkins High School. EXTREME UPPER LEFT: Mr. Herrington continues to be a much demanded treasurer. UPPER LEFT: Mrs. Mehlhorn seems to be always buried in student transcripts. LEFT: Mrs. Mell always has a cheerful smile. ABOVE: Mrs. Sinclair, the newest of the office staff, fits in well with the HVJ world. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE STAFF 15 ENTHUSIASM, CARE AND UNDERSTANDING The counselors devoted their time to guiding students toward a successful life after graduation. They assisted students in choosing useful classes that were helpful at HVJ and would be in college and in the future. They also assisted students in solving their problems. To help students in choosing their future vocations, they sponsored Rotary Career Day in November. On that day outstanding community people talked to students about their different professions. Mr. Fields was counselor for the ninth grade, Mrs. Hollowell for the tenth and eleventh grades, and Mrs. Preetorious for the twelfth grade. Mrs. Patton was the always efficient and smiling secretary. EXTREME UPPER: Always smiling, Mrs. Preetorious helped assure our seniors of graduation. ABOVE: Mrs. Patton proved again to be invaluable to Jenkins. ABOVE LEFT: Mrs. Hollowell v s always concerned about each and every student. LEFT: Mr. Fields continued to help the students in every way he could. 16 COUNSELORS AN APPLE A DAY Mrs. B. Verrett was the nurse at Jenkins for the 1978-1979 school year. She enjoyed working with the young people and helping them with their personal problems. The main responsibility of Mrs. Verrett was to plan the best procedure for emergency care of sicknesses and accidents occurring in school. She was in charge of notifying parents and making arrangements for students in case of sudden illness or injury. A daily log was kept on all students coming into the infirmary and students leaving school early. Mrs. Verrett was also in charge of screening procedures for hearing and vision tests. UPPER: Mrs. Verrett verifies a student's note for leaving early. ABOVE: Mrs. Verrett assists an ill student. ABOVE RIGHT: Mrs. Verrett administers the vision test. INFIRMARY 17 NUNNALLY AND CO. Every morning one group of people arrived at school before anyone else. Every afternoon this same group was the last to leave. These people kept our school and grounds clean and did other general maintenance work. They were the custodians and the maids. While the maids were cleaning the windows in the loggia and sweeping the halls, the custodians were seen fixing broken windows or replacing light bulbs. Without this work the physical appearance of our school would have been less than desirable. Mr. Herman Nunnally, head custodian, and his company did a good job of keeping our school in respectable condition. 18 MAINTENANCE FOOD FOR THOUGHT When the 11:30 bell sounded, a large group of people headed for the cafeteria. These people were treated to a choice of three menus for only forty-five cents, including milk. On holidays, special traditional meals were prepared. Turkey and dressing were served at Christmas and Thanksgiving. In honor of Easter, the students were served Easter eggs. The lunchroom staff, headed by Dorothy Kaigler, worked hard to prepare delicious, well-balanced lunches for all the hungry Warriors. This hard work paid off by making the HVJ cafeteria one of the best. UPPER: Students are served a variety of lunches. ABOVE: Students enjoying a typical school lunch. ABOVE RIGHT: A student eagerly receives his lunch. CAFETERIA 19 MEDIA CENTER OFFICE Last year the library had not only numerous books and periodicals but also audio-visual equipment for the use of teachers and students. For the students who were unfamiliar with the facilities, there were two librarians and two clerks to give assistance. Throughout the year many classes, especially the research classes, met in the library for orientation and research studies. During the lunch hour some of the students spent their time reading books, thumbing through magazines, listening to recordings, or viewing film strips. An added bonus for the teachers was the newly established teachers' workroom and lounge located in the library. UPPER: Mr. Powell and Mrs. Adkins decide on materials to be ordered. ABOVE: Mrs. Christiansen helps the teachers by running off stencils for tests. 21 PTSA MOVING UP The PTSA, made up of teachers, students and parents, worked together to help further the education of the students. The PTSA held open house every quarter so that the parents could meet the teachers and learn about the subjects that the students were taking. The teachers and the parents tried to work out any conflicts that might be affecting the students' grades. The band and the chorus performed at the PTSA meeting. They put on a Christmas show as a treat to wish everyone a nice holiday. ABOVE: Mr. Crosby telling one of his stories. UPPER: Mr. Dasher cites the PTSA objectives. ABOVE LEFT: Mr. Funk was one of the many speakers of the PTSA year. 22 PTSA DEDICATED SUPPORTERS The Adult Boosters showed the Warriors their support again last year. They promoted full cooperation among the club members, the coaches, the school officials and the students participating in sports. The Adult Boosters also sponsored many school activities at HVJ. The Booster club honored the year's athletes in sports banquets held in the fall, winter, and spring. The club awarded trophies and plaques to outstanding participants in each school sport. The v courses included those in grammar and sentence structure, creative writing classes, poems and short stories, and college preparatory classes in research and literature. Many teachers tried to break away from the monotonous routine of teaching strictly from the book. Group studies, projects for self-expression and oral presentations didn't quite take the place of the book, but they added a more relaxed atmosphere which enabled a better student-teacher relationship. Under the guidance of Laura Breedlove, head of the English Department, the English teachers at HVJ made English a greatly appreciated subject. 25 UPPER LEFT: What's so funny. Mrs. Whitney? ABOVE LEFT: Mr. Hayes prepares for another busy day at HVJ. ABOVE: Mrs. Davis awaits the arrival of her students. ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE The actor's art consists of making a disciplined instrument from an undisciplined human being. It is a very complex and absurd art which is only possible thanks to the duality of each individual: His profound being and his identity. It is an art which tears the actor apart since, on one hand, he must develop his power of sensibility to the extreme of hysteria, and on the other hand, he must develop through will power a constant self-control. ABOVE RIGHT: never knew that opening a door was so difficult. 26 DRAMA ...AND THE BEAT GOES ON The Music Department at Jenkins was the place to go when feeling down. Everywhere there was a cheerful note and the sound of a comforting melody. Mr. Benjamin Sinkus provided a basis to those students who wanted to develop technique and style in playing band instruments. This included playing at many school functions. Mr. Robert Fennell led the chorus classes to near perfection. The students developed talents and skills that could be useful throughout a lifetime. UPPER: The band helps to entertain the fans at the pep rallies. LEFT: Mr. Sinkus, band director, takes his work seriously. ABOVE: Mr. Fennell discusses plans for the upcoming chorus concerts. MUSIC 27 CREATIVE HANDS AT WORK The art classes this past year were in a place where students could go to release the tensions of everyday living. Students were also able to relax and put their imaginations to work. Many dreams became realities, and numerous projects were successful. During the fall quarter Mrs. Susan Starr, artist in residence, taught the art of weaving to Mrs. Friedenberg's classes. In addition to weaving, students experimented with batik, silk screen, tye-dye, mosaic and scrap art. VI ralQnda f art tnfcr UPPER: The art of weaving. There were many different subjects offered by these departments: American Political Behavior, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Psychology, Urban Studies, and even the Future. By means of lecture and class discussion, Mrs. Carletha Gadson, Mrs. Shirley Williams, and Mrs. Gussie Jenkins helped students to understand themselves better. They also helped students to improve their human relationships and to understand the problems of society. SOCIAL SCIENCE 29 USES OF THE PAST Every student at HVJ this past year was required to take social science classes to satisfy state requirements for graduation. Most students found the classes interesting and informative because of the wide variety of subjects offered. The requirements included such courses as World Geography, U.S. History, and World History. Additional social science classes dealing with law, news, and ethnic studies were offered to students interested in contemporary topics. The students studied certain eras of the past to help them understand the present. UPPER RIGHT: Ms. Marsha Flisnick is always on the move. ABOVE: Chairman of the Social Studies Department. RIGHT: Is Mr. Harris rewriting our laws? 30 SOCIAL SCIENCE The main purpose of the science department was to increase the student's understanding of his natural environment. This was achieved by the techniques and concepts offered by the teachers and the courses taught. There were many courses to choose from, such as chemistry, biology, physics, and physiology, as well as many others. The science department was a vital part of each academic schedule. Students were able to probe and explore many aspects of life in the scientific world. UPPER: Mrs. Farrer takes a break in-between classes. Two years of math was the requirement for graduation, but additional courses were recommended to help with the students' future plans. For students wishing to continue their education, advanced classes in algebra, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus were offered to help in taking college math. The study of basic accounting and business math was essential to students wishing to pursue careers in these areas. Other courses included management math, geometry, and general math. A STUDY OF CULTURES The foreign language department helped students broaden their knowledge of other cultures. During the spring of 1978, Jenkins installed a language laboratory. The laboratory enabled the teachers to conduct several different programs simultaneously. In addition to the textbooks, students used workbooks and did projects or reports to re-enforce their knowledge. Mrs. Amari, teacher of Latin and French, and Mrs. Gary, teacher of Spanish, supplemented their teaching with field trips to restaurants and historic Savannah. Among these courses were typing, office machines, record keeping, accounting, and shorthand. Vocational Office Training (VOT) was offered to those students who planned to continue in business careers. The instructors in business classes were Mrs. Helmly, Miss Robertson, Mrs. Hewitt and Mrs. Gardner. Each instructor worked with the students to help them develop and improve their work habits. UPPER LEFT: Miss Robertson tends a helping hand. ABOVE: Mrs. Helmly plans work for her students. LEFT: asdfjkl;. 39 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN HOME EC. The Home Economics Department this past year was designed to educate the students for their occupations in homemaking. In today's society it is important to provide the opportunity to develop skills and understanding in assuming the dual role of the homemaker and wage earner. Under the instruction of Mrs. T. Wright and Miss M. Seckinger, the department offered courses in food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, home furnishing, home management, child development and creative stitchery. UPPER RIGHT: Students work together to prepare their recipe file. RIGHT: According to Mrs. Wright, some names are hard to pronounce. ABOVE: Miss Seckinger makes her point. 40 HOME EC. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The Industrial Arts Department was a place for only the most interested students. The classes offered industry-related projects in order to give the student practical experience for knowledge found in the classroom. The manual craft students were given the task of building an airplane using their own ideas to improve upon their existing plans. The woodworking classes were devoted to constructing a variety of fine furniture pieces. Also offered were electricity and electronics courses for interested students. Each of the Industrial Arts classes provided students with valuable learning experiences. UPPER: Mr. Lemay and Mr. Bush hard at work. ABOVE RIGHT: These two can't seem to find the woodworking lab. Department. Among these courses were Softball, Soccer, Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Tennis. The favorites of most students were Gymnastics, Recreational Games and Swimming. These classes generally dealt with the safety, skills, and cooperation of the students. The coaching staff, consisting of Head Coach Robert Herndon, Benjamin Gadson, Bobbie Allen, Joseph Sanfilippo, Mrs. Eliose Glass, and Mrs. Jessie Kenlaw, was one of the best we have ever had. They were skilled, and they indisputably did an excellent job in helping to develop well-rounded students. 43 UPPER: A strong forehand returns the ball. ABOVE RIGHT: A certain form is necessary for successful ping pong. ABOVE: A game of speed and skill. BEHIND THE WHEEL ✓ ’ Many Jenkins students reaped the benefits of the Driver's Education classes. First and most obvious were the skills learned and developed through the excellent driving instructors, Mrs. Gloria Carter and Mr. Charles Larcom. They taught the young drivers rules of the road and safety tips in the classroom during the first half of the course. They took the students on the range and the open road to develop further their skills in the second half. New drivers acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to become safe and defensive drivers. UPPER RIGHT: Students try their skills out on the range. RIGHT: Tammy Speller examines the car before attempting to drive it. Mrs. Myrtle Baulkmon and Mrs. Alice Shoff, teachers of the pre-vocational training program (PVT), helped students learn how to find and keep jobs. The SLD program, under the direction of Mrs. Lois Caphton and Mrs. Nancy Merk, gave extra help to students with special learning disabilities. Mrs. Elise Shernoff, the Behavior Disorders teacher, acted as counselor and teacher to her students, helping them with both personal and school problems. Mrs. Annette Holliday, head of the reading program, helped students improve their reading abilities. For academically advanced students, the SEARCH program, coordinated by Ms. Marsha Flisnick, offered accelerated courses in English, Science and Social Studies. Before his death, he set up a trust fund from which a set amount of money, to be used for the benefit of students, would be donated to the PTSA each year. Some of the money was used to erect the marquee in front of the school and to buy picnic tables located around the campus. Miss Victoria Jenkins, our benefactor's daughter, takes time out of her busy schedule to stay informed about her father's namesake. Although Miss Jenkins' time is an important contribution, it is not by far the only one. Her generousity provided the band with new pants and accessories and the color guard with new equipment. The majorettes' equipment was another of her donations to the school. Her latest contribution has been a much needed photography lab. Miss Victoria Jenkins has earned the student bodys' gratitude and admiration as she has continued to support the school in the spirit of her father. UPPER: Miss Victoria Jenkins, our benefactress. APPRECIATION 49 STUDENT LIFE HOMECOMING 79 The week of November 6 was proclaimed Homecoming Week. There were daily activities for all warriors and squaws. These festivities provided an excellent opportunity for all students to exhibit their Warrior spirit. Lowell Dasher and Margaret Williams were named Mr. and Miss Spirit. The traditional Homecoming game followed the week's events on Saturday evening. At half time, Lisa Jones was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1978-79. The Queen's court consisted of Carla Thompson, Janet Holland, Shelly Kelly, and Cindy Helmly. The loss of the Homecoming game did not put a damper on the Warriors' enthusiasm. The ceremony began with a procession to music played by the Jenkins' band. Greg Harvey gave the first address. A program of songs preceded Cathy Ryan's speech. Mr. Woodrow Crosby, Principal of Jenkins High, introduced the class and Dr. Martha Fay. 1st district school board member, presented the diplomas. As each graduate received his diploma, his picture was taken by a professional photographer. After the benediction the smiling seniors — sometimes tearful — left the auditorium in triumph. Excitement filled the air as everyone looked forward to the Grad Night events. Music, rides, food, new people and places all combined to make the trip a memorable experience. Many schools from all over the United States participated in this salute to graduates. Approximately one hundred seniors and their guests made the trip to Florida. Eleven Jenkins staff members went along as chaperons to keep things running smoothly. The senior journey, however, did not end with Disney World. The Seniors continued their trip to St. Augustine where they toured the historic city. All in all, everyone agreed that Grad Night 1978 was a tremendous success. UPPER: Look out, cause here we come! Gadson, did all in their ability to promote and uphold school spirit. During the summer, these girls spent many countless hours practicing to be the best. With the help of the Adult Booster Club and the support they received from the student body, they were able to attend a week-long cheerleading camp in Jacksonville, Florida, and a delightful weekend in Disney World. Representing HVJ, they received several superior and excellent ribbons in their effort to succeed to the top. Pep rallies, contests, and many other events were held to boost the spirit of the football team and the student body. CHEERLEADERS OF HVJ UPPER: Mrs. Carletha Gadson, advisor. Varsity Cheerleaders. The Walden Piddle Memorial Society was newly formed last year by students wishing to employ their talents for a practical purpose. The club's goal was to stage a program of original skits, basically humorous, but with a touch of the serious. To achieve this end required much work as well as talent. The first and most important task combined both hard work and talent — the writing and editing of the skits. Second, came the raising of money to pay for props, costumes and equipment. The props were organized and the skits were rehearsed in preparation for the big event. Finally the show was successfully produced. UPPER LEFT: Front Row: James Dekle - Extra Baggage. WALDEN PIDDLE SOCIETY 95 ONE OF A KIND The AIFS, the American Institute for Foreign Study Students, founded in 1964, the world's oldest and largest organization for educational travel was active at HVJ. Participants included teachers as counselors and students from high schools and colleges. The organization provided mini-programs as well as summer-long programs throughout each school year. AIFS students were involved in studying and visiting a foreign area of their choice anywhere in the world. The AIFS offered partial scholarships to both students and counselors. This was the first year that HVJ had an AIFS club. Many interesting activities were expected in the coming years. UPPER: AIFS Officers. Last year was Fennell's fourth at HVJ, and the community has seen the Choral Department steadily grow and excell. Presented in this section are shots from 78's smash hit Godspell. Over two thousand people saw and loved this excellent and moving production of the Stephen Schwartz musical. Included also is a review of the play by Brendan Galloway. Christmas week was made more spirited by four Chorus performances of Christmas music; part of which was a spirited disco section of seasonal carols. Chorus also made its annual presentation of music at Johnson Square. December and January brought two trophies home for HVJ. The Chorus production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown won first place at the Region 3AAAA One-Act-Play Competition; and fourth place at the State AAAA meet. Bravo, Chorus! BRAVO! Thanks for putting a Chatham County School on the map! Public performances of Charlie Brown were presented March 22, 23, and 24. This year's spring show, presented May 23-26, was the Broadway musical, The Me. The show — with a cast of thousands — was greatly received. Once again. Chorus deserves all the applause it gets. For twenty well-deserving students, the most memorable event of the year was their trip to New York City. The singing Warriors saw six Broadway plays and visited the usual Big Apple sights. GODSPELL - ENVY OF THE PROS So special was a Savannah event on April 13, 14, and 15, that you could forget you're seeing, hearing, and sensing it in the confines of a bare gymnasium. It could have been in any school gym but it was in fact at Jenkins High School, and it was the students' spring show. The offering was a production of Godspell. Banish the condescension with which one utters the words high school show. Many an adult experienced company, community or professional, might well have been proud to be part of the action on DeRenne Avenue two weeks ago. For those readers who have been in a deep sleep for the past ten years, let it be repeated that Godspell is a reverent rock version of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. It begins in a light, comic vein, and builds inexorably to its dynamic climax. In the wrong hands, the show's expression of love and emotion could become maudlin to the point of blasphemy. The music, lyrics and book of Stephen Schwartz were in precisely the right hands at Jenkins High School, Savannah, Georgia. Assistance from many dedicated people was evidenced throughout, but the big credit belongs to Bob Fennell, director, musical director, choreographer, costumes and props chief, and general Mr. Everything. Tim Garrett was cast as Jesus. Arthur Hutto was John the Baptist and Judas Iscariot. The disciples, followers, and the multitudes, in turn faithless, faithful, naughty, and better, were portrayed with skill and devotion by Joe Bonaparte, Bedford Davis, Tracey Flanders, Mira Harrison, Kathy Leaf, Annette Matthews, Ginny Sims, and Kim Trammell. The important innovation was the choir of one hundred and fifty mixed voices, composed of the many choruses of Jenkins High School. These voices were played upon as delicately as upon any instruments, and provided a background that was restrained, sometimes muted, never insistent, always disciplined. The sound system was efficient, and the lighting well-used, imparting a sense of little theatre intimacy to the cavernous hall. The orchestra, remember the orchestra! At the keyboard, Sanford Cohen abetted by Bob Fennell (!), accoustic and electric guitar, David Patterson, electric bass guitar, Gary Hamaker, drums and percussion, Conrad Clements and Johnny Tabakian, and on the trumpet Mike Ward. A trifle loud, perhaps, now and again, but the youngsters love loud, the show's theme is love, and surely the good Lord wouldn't mind? The choreography was clean-cut, clear, unpretentious, and beautifully executed. Every movement throughout the show seemed orchestrated. Costumes were bright, gaudy, colorful, garish, unmatching, and triumphantly flaunted, straight out of Grandmas's attic ragbag. Make-up was clownlike, to match. Godspell has no lead roles, as such, unless it be Jesus, gently or resonantly sung, perceptively acted, by Garrett. An eleventh-hour replacement in this role, Garrett was not line perfect, but he handled the occasional fluff with cheerful, accepting calm of the believer. The true test of director and company, in terms of artistic discipline and control, comes in the second act, with the acute grief of the trial and crucifixion, and the outpouring of sorrow and hope of resurrection. True tears were shed and real feelings emerged, but Bob Fennell's company of nearly two hundred actors and singers never came unglued. Here was professionalism exhibited by a high school company, a true community of effort — a real communion. The sailors were greeted by the color guard and were surprised to find their flag flying over the campus. The cadets were treated to an HVJ school lunch and then a tour of the school. The cadets were escorted by several members of the AFS club. UPPER LEFT: HVJ flies the Swedish colors. UPPER RIGHT: This American school lunch looks good! ABOVE LEFT: Sharing a Swedish sentiment. Through the FHA, students had the privilege of exploring job-career opportunities, examining their strong points and their weaknesses, learning to cope with failure as well as success, discovering cooperative skills, and cultivating the capacity to enjoy life. During the past year the FHA took part in numerous activities. They made up fruit baskets which they donated to the elderly, took part in the state convention in Atlanta, and attended FHA meetings in Swainsboro. A scholarship sponsored by the Georgia Power Company was awarded to the most talented student. Thanks to the FHA, each student was able to discover new areas in homemaking. Developing skills, however, was not enough to bring success to the high school students. They learned to work together, to plan together, to organize and to carry out worthy activities. This past year, the VICA club participated in numerous activities. They gave fruit baskets to a local nursing home and toys to the children at Georgia Regional Hospital and sponsored the area and state Special Olympics. UPPER: VICA Officers. The FBLA was an intergral part of the Vocational Office Training class. Its main objective was to prepare students for the business world. The club sponsored candy sales and also sold jewelry to raise money. Under the direction of their advisor, Mrs. Winifred Helmly, the club also worked together in civic activities. At Christmas the members of FBLA gave a party to the children at Georgia Regional. The year ended with an employer-employee banquet at Carey Hilliard's Restaurant. UPPER: FBLA Officers. The goal of the Jenkins club was to develop leadership abilities through various school, business and social activities. The organization tried to help students realize their vocational goals. This was achieved by projects and activities that created enthusiasm for learning in school, provided information about careers and vocational opportunities and helped students find success in the different occupations. VOCA 117 INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS The Industrial Arts Club, under the direction of Mr. Leonard Lemay, enjoyed a productive year last year. The club was made up of two after-school, extended-day classes. One of these was for students interested in aircraft construction. These students modified existing plans for a two-place aircraft, then built one using them. Each student was allowed to pilot the airplane. Another club-class was for those interested in photography. Under Mr. Lemay's guidance, the students studied everything from basic photography mechanics to darkroom technology. The class made use of the extensive photography lab located in the Industrial Arts wing of the school. UPPER: Mr. Lemay - Advisor. ABOVE: Industrial Arts Oub. Sitting: Scotty Parker. PECE involved students in the actual working community by letting them work for short periods of time in several different work settings. The students had group guidance which let them share their feelings and experiences. Visits were made to many different places: WJCL, Savannah Voc-Tech, real estate offices, and Savannah Electric and Power Company. Other activities included guest speakers, filmstrips, and outings. The PECE Program was an asset because it did much to help each student recognize the relationship between the school curriculum and occupational opportunities in each career field. The coordinator for PECE was Mr. B. J. Douglass. EXTREME UPPER: PECE. Front Row: Andrew Pelger, Tim Bacon, Tammy Muse, Rusty Barefield. Though the team was a bit weak in their hitting, their strong points included good pitching and impressive fielding. The team won over Savannah High twice, and once over Groves in the region games. If the team had not been forced to forfeit games, they would have been a region contender. The team, coached by Delray Carlee and Joseph Sanfilippo, assisted by Lee Snyder, included skilled players, many of whom were graduating seniors. Although they did not quite reach their goal, the team benefited by strengthening their skills and gaining valuable playing experience. Captain Annette Beebe and Coach Jessie Kenlaw encouraged the team to do their best at all times. Their spirit helped instill pride in the team and the individual players. Eighteen different schools participated. Although inexperienced, our golfers played like true sportsmen against their all-time rivals, Benedictine and Windsor Forest. Outstanding players for the year were Doug Stuart, No. 1 man; Larry Olsen, No. 2 man; and Mike Barker, No. 3 man. The teams had five track meets with local and out-of-town schools: Savannah High, Beach, Groves, Tompkins and Southwest Macon. In the Girls' Track Team, the girls who qualified for the finals in all track meets were Vicky Moody, Stacey Michael, Lisa Miller and Arlene Ruth. Danette Johnson, who was second in hurdles in Country Day relays and second in Region, represented Jenkins in the State track meet. In the Boys' Track Team, the boys who qualified for the state finals were Tony Lee, second in state (100 yd. dash), and Roland Wallace, sixth in state (880 yd. run). WINTER SPORTS 130 FOOTBALL Though the 78-79 football team did not win as many games as they had hoped for, in each game the players demonstrated their determination to win. The season began with a loss to a newcomer in the Region 3-AAAA, the Johnson Atomsmashers. After four straight losses to Savannah High, Effingham County, Brunswick, and Windsor Forest, practice and hard work lead to a 13-12 victory over Wayne County. The Warriors went into the second half of the schedule facing the Benedictine Cadets, but the Cadets bombarded our reservation by a final score of 27-0. Jenkins, however, did not give up hope. After losing to Groves, the Warriors had a week off to plan a great strategy against Beach. The Warriors pulled off a tremendous victory over the Bulldogs 27-6. UPPER: Coaches. The team developed one of the best defensive units in the region and ended the season with an 0-4-2 record. In their opening game against Windsor Forest High, the players showed their determination and strength. The game resulted in an unbreakable 8-8 tie. Long before the first game the team had put in hours of practice to sharpen their skills and to prepare themselves for the rough season ahead. Under the excellent direction of head coach Benjamin Gadson, the young, powerful team posed a threat to the best teams of region three AAAA. This was not evident from the start, however. The team dropped their first two outings against Groves and Savannah High. The Warrior spirit was never lost, though, as they got on the winning track and finished the season with an 11 12 record that didn't really tell the story of the exciting games and the close losses. This past year the team was coached again by Mr. Bobby Allen, who built up the team's self-confidence by his hard practices and superior coaching tactics. Coach Allen stated, We have a lot of kids that have ability that they didn't know they have. Because of that our Varsity Squad for the next years will be highly experienced. As for our B team — if Wilder continues to send us the kids like these of the past year, we will continue to have a winning season. TOP RIGHT: Chris Thompson shoots for two. BASKETBALL HIGH HOPES AHEAD Last year's Girls' Basketball team, coached by Tom Miller, worked hard but faced numerous obstacles. Much to everyone's disappointment, the team's final record was 3-15. GIRLS' BASKETBALL 141 MOVE OVER, PELE' Under the guidance of coach Joseph Sanfilippo, the 1978-79 Varsity and Junior Varsity Soccer teams proved to be successful. Finishing the season with a 8-2 record, the Varsity team had its most impressive victories over Savannah Country Day and Savannah High with other wins over Groves, Beach and Windsor Forest. The Most Valuable Player for the season was Jay Johnson, who also served as team captain. The Junior Varsity team also ended the season with an excellent 2-1-1 record with victories over Savannah Country Day and Benedictine Military School. To promote spirit at all games, the Prep Cheerleaders led chants and cheers for the HVJ soccer fans. ABOVE: Stan Ballenger - our dedicated representative of Bryn-Alan Photography Studio. 228 EDITOR'S FAREWELL FROM SHARON UPPER: Mike Brown - our indispensable friend from Keys Printing Company. ABOVE: Wallace Hayes - advisor. ABOVE RIGHT: Josephine Amari — advisor. Gratefully I dedicate this twenty-first volume of the SEQUOYAH to the students and faculty of Hershel V. Jenkins High School. I hope this book will serve its purpose to all who read it. Of course, many will find the opportunity to criticize the book; however, perfection was not my goal. Everyone involved in the production of the SEQUOYAH attempted to preserve a wide variety of memories that would remind us all of the good times at HVJ. There are several people who deserve recognition of their patience and guidance with the staff. I cannot find words to express my gratitude to our advisors, Mr. Wallace Hayes and Mrs. Josephine Amari. More often than not, both advisors spent much of their rare spare time working on the yearbook. The staff and I also have to thank Mike Brown of Keys Printing Company and Stan Ballenger of Bryn-Alan Studio for answering our many cries for help. I would also like to thank my staff for their hard work and cooperation. We had a few problems, but the whole experience was one that I am sure we will not forget. I would also like to say that it was the spirit and the enthusiasm of the entire Warrior crowd that actually created this yearbook. To you, the students and the faculty of HVJ, I dedicate this volume of the SEQUOYAH. 229 GENERAL INDEX aaron, karen 63. 77, 88, 103, 107, 147 adams, jacquelyn 147 adams, linda 84, 85, 99, 103, 177
