Golden Anniversary Dedicafion We, the members of the annual staff, dedicate the 1961 Chewelan to Mr. Louis W. Gaiser, who, for the past thirty years, has faithfully and effi- ciently served as superintendent of the Chewelah public schools. Graduating from Ritzville High School, Mr. Gaiser earned his Bachelor's Degree at Whitman College in 1921 and began his career in educa- tion at Thorp, Washington, where he was a high school teacher and athletic coach. Two years later he accepted a position as principal and coach for football and basketball at Sydney, Montana. Next he accepted the superintendency at Simms, Montana. Here he met his bride-to- be, and, when two years later he moved to the superintendency at Nez Perce, Idaho, it was Mr. and ME. Gaiser who made the trip. In 1930, having accepted the superintendency of School District 436, he moved his family to Chewelah. Here for the past thirty years he has supervised the educational progress of this com- munity. Under his leadership, Chewelah was the first school system in the county to receive ac- creditation. Under his guidance, Chewelah has consistently afforded a sound and practical curric ulum, limited only by the resources that the community could provide. Under his direction, the district constructed three-fourths of the pre- sent plant facilities. In 1954 the last building project, a modern gymnasium, was completed, and in an impressive ceremony, was dedicated to Mr. Gaiser. No other person has contributed so much to the education of both students and patrons of District 436. The 1961 graduating class has the distinction of being the fiftieth anniversary class. When Mr. Gaiser hands a diploma to the last graduating Senior of this class-, he will have witnessed the graduation of 1 663 students This is eighty percent of all students graduated from Jenkins high School. Deeming it an honor, the annual class pridefully dedicates the 1961 Chewelan to a man devoted to the service and education of youth a man of high integrity, a man of vision, a man who -is in a large measure responsible for all the facilities and opportunities offered by District 436. Far be it from these words and this annual to express appropriately our deepest feelings of gratitude. THE ANNUAL STAFF, 1961
