U 1 9 Golden Anniversary Dedicafion We, the members of the annual staff, dedicate the 1961 Chewelan to Mr. Louis W. Gaiser, who, for the past thirty years, has faithfully and effi- ciently served as superintendent of the Chewelah public schools. Graduating from Ritzville High School, Mr. Gaiser earned his Bachelor's Degree at Whitman College in 1921 and began his career in educa- tion at Thorp, Washington, where he was a high school teacher and athletic coach. Two years later he accepted a position as principal and coach for football and basketball at Sydney, Montana. Next he accepted the superintendency at Simms, Montana. Here he met his bride-to- be, and, when two years later he moved to the superintendency at Nez Perce, Idaho, it was Mr. and ME. Gaiser who made the trip. In 1930, having accepted the superintendency of School District 436, he moved his family to Chewelah. Here for the past thirty years he has supervised the educational progress of this com- munity. Under his leadership, Chewelah was the first school system in the county to receive ac- creditation. Under his guidance, Chewelah has consistently afforded a sound and practical curric ulum, limited only by the resources that the community could provide. Under his direction, the district constructed three-fourths of the pre- sent plant facilities. In 1954 the last building project, a modern gymnasium, was completed, and in an impressive ceremony, was dedicated to Mr. Gaiser. No other person has contributed so much to the education of both students and patrons of District 436. The 1961 graduating class has the distinction of being the fiftieth anniversary class. When Mr. Gaiser hands a diploma to the last graduating Senior of this class-, he will have witnessed the graduation of 1 663 students This is eighty percent of all students graduated from Jenkins high School. Deeming it an honor, the annual class pridefully dedicates the 1961 Chewelan to a man devoted to the service and education of youth a man of high integrity, a man of vision, a man who -is in a large measure responsible for all the facilities and opportunities offered by District 436. Far be it from these words and this annual to express appropriately our deepest feelings of gratitude. 'Q fi? Grand March d by ENCO SERVICE STATION N.. Y W2 Class Hisfory September 4, 1949, 58 first graders began twelve long years of school. Do all you boys recall the game that was so popular in the first grade ? Remember how it Went ? First the boys chased the girls and then vice versa. Paul, who was that you were always chasing ? This same year we took part in the High School May Day by doing a square dance in long gowns and old fashioned suits. We climbed another rung on the ladder of education by advancing to the second grade. gghugk, we've always wondered what flavor the paste was you so relished that year. V Remember how everyone mispronounced Mrs. Finela's name ? It always seemed to come out Mrs. Vanilla . In the third grade we were entertained by quite a fantastic report from Mickey about what he got for Christmas. We then advanced to the position of upper-graders . Sallgis art work was greatly appreciated this year by the fourth-grade boys. E-L do you remember what was so interesting inside a certain window that you had to climb on Bobby, , and ,1 im Abbott's shoulders to get a better look ? The fifth grade was reached and also our first real notice of the opposite sex. Many love notes were passed back and forth and some intercepted by Mrs. Childress and Mrs. Nagel. Meanwhile in St. Mary's Mrs. Grumbach's fifth grade class got paddled with her wooden spoon. Next year, our last in the grade school, we gave the traditional operetta, ours being Mulligan's Magic . The star players were: Lonnie Butz as Mulligan, Christy Nussbaum as Mother, Carolyn Koppe as her daughter, Sally Meyer and Ann Poetter as storekeeper's daughters and Mickey Richmond as detective Tip-Toe Pete. There was quite a mix-up over a gir1's part between Qarol Zeigler and Julie Ann Lucasg so to settle it the teacher made the part twin girl's. Do all the St. Mary's graduates remember how the boys were the pets in the ninth grade, and also how llmmy and Roger raided the kitchen after school. In the Ninth grade our football team won the Unbeatable trophy. The top five at our ninth grade graduation were Terry Rieckers, Adrienne Raber, Christv Nussbaum, Carol Zeiglerp, and Bill Bittick. As Sophomores We were joined by our good friends from St. Mary'sg who were: Jim Coe, Dannv Bordwell, Dean Frizzel, Dan Hentges, Roger Huguenin, Bonnie Kessler, Jackie Linke, Margaret Stolp, Carolyn Tomsha, and Mike Zodrow. When we were Juniors We gave our first formal dance. The theme was Harbor Lights . Chosen as Prince and Princess were ,Jim Coe and Sally Mever. This year we sponsored the play Down to Earth given by Mrs. Bresnahan's dramatics class to which some of us belonged. When we became Mighty Seniors, as the expression goes, our class advisors were Mrs. Carter, Mr. Sammers, and Mr. Lee. The theme for our Senior Ball was A Thousand Stars , reigning over the dance were lSm and Queen Louise Jurun. The Harmaniacs provided the music for us this year. In the spring of 1961, 71 Seniors are graduating to face the world.
