Hnigt Who Died November 16, 1931 We Dedicate This Annual. HE is still ours. Her love flows out to us just the same. The separation cannot make her any less our own! That's all that death is, just agoing away into another coun- try. A beautiful mystery through which we pass as through an open gate, with glad surprise at the things that shall be made plain to us and with great sense of triumph! --Annie Fellows Johnston MISS MARY K. VOIGT Q9 ilinrvmnrh asf IME moving relentlessly on in its endless cycle holds only memories of the past, duties of the present, and hopes for the future. Necessarily, the old school has been replaced by the new, visions of yesterday have given place to the actualities of today, but the ideals of honor, loyalty and manhood still stand as memorials to those who through the years have guided the destiny of our Alma Mater. If, in glancing through these pages, you catch some of the vision which has made the Jelfersonville of the present rise from the shadows of the past, wwe shall feel that our task hasfnot beenwfruitless. 12' 4 -gy ll 'flirt P V Q. , 'Q' xg l g'i,,,1.vgx , 7 . Standing on the obser- vation platform, I waved good-bye to my mother and father. I was setting out to make a career for myself. As the skyscrapers of Jeffersonville faded into the distant horizon, I turned to go into the lounge and read. Immediately fate intercepted. While I was passing through a sleeper, the train gave a nasty lurch that sent me headlong into some one's berth. When I looked up, rubbing my head dazedly, I saw Frances Ehringer, or at least, I thought I did. She was smiling broadly, I suppose I was rather funny looking. I finally straightened myself out and We sat, talking over the old school daze Cwith two meaningsl. She told me that Charlesetta Howell and Aileen Huckleberry were traveling with her. We talked until the wee small hours of morning, then I decided I had better get a few Winks of sleep, so we arranged to eat breakfast together in the morning. I had not been in bed over ten minutes, until the owner of the berth above mine came along. Instead of waiting until the porter put up the ladder, he stepped up on my bed and bore all his weight on my arm which I happened to have dangling over the side. Of course, it made me angry, so I started to get up and tell him about it, when to my utter amazement, I parted the curtains and came face to face with Denny Constantine. Of course, the dear boy apologized profusedly, as he had always done when in high school. I bid him good-night, after a short chat in which he said he was dropping off in Tennessee for a business conference, and the rest of the night passed uneventfully. In the morning, Frances, Charlesetta, Aileen, and I chatted gaily until they informed me that the next station they must leave me, as that was where their firm was established. fThey were interior decoratorsj In a few minutes they said good-bye and left me alone, or so I thought. But when I returned to my seat, I found there Raymond Grote who said he had seen me with the girls and wanted to talk to me. I found that he was on his way to Orlando where he and Bill Davis were going to start a cross country non-stop ilight. It seems as though their dreams to become great aviators had come true. The rest of the trip I took in peace and solitude. When I alighted from the train it was nearly noon and having had only a cup of coEee for breakfast, I was nearly starved. So I went to the nearest restaurant. To my astonishment Earl Eadens was the proprietor and two of his waitresses were Helen and Catherine Goodman. I asked how business was and they said they were doing well. Who would have thought Earl would have become a restaurant keeper. My! My! From the restaurant I went to the Hacienda Hotel to engage rooms until I could set myself up in business. CI forgot to mention that I was opening a tea room in New Port Richey.D As I walked down the hall be- hind the bell-hop, a couple whom I recognized as Emma Glasier and James Butcher, came out of the dining room. They had been married and were on their honeymoon. The next day I had to go to Tarpon Springs on business and while I was there I went to see a stage play called Betty Engaged . There were a few girls and boys in the chorus whom I had known during my high school days. Louise Fry, Libbie Baird, Martha Howard, Mary Elva Jones and others I didn't know-made up-the girls' chorus. Milton Gilmore and Harry Hill were the only two boys I knew. On Sunday I decided to go to the South Methodist Church. All the while the pastor was preaching, I thought his voice and face familiar. When church finally ended, I made it my business to inquire of my neigh- bor who he was. I learned that it was the Rev. Charles Dillman. He cer- tainly could preach an inspiring sermon. On Sunday afternoon as I was walking down the street, I met Eddie Shepard. After chatting a great deal about nothing, I learned that he was working, as a model in a very fine haberdashery, there. The next day I received a letter from Jane Keil and Joyce Worrall who had been traveling all over the United States and had met many of the '32 class. The first person they mentioned was Jack Childs who had been elected Sheriff of Clark County. CThat job certainly seems to run in the family.J They had seen Robert Brummett and Ruth Cain who were mar- ried and had a child. They said while they were in New York they had seen the Trifling Trio on the stage. Of course you know who they are: Sam Cowling, Louis Perkins, and Gilbert Jones. They had also visited Indiana University where they had seen Edwin Mclver and Arthur Schafer who were yell leaders. They sent me a New York paper with the most in- teresting topics marked. The first one I read was of Raymond Kramer, Edward Knoerr, Ken- neth Kendall, Morton Roederer, and Frank Riley who had joined the Navy. The second was a write-up about Edward Bolly, Garland Lewis, and Charles Scott who had become famous basketball stars. Any one could have predicted such a future for three such brilliant players. The third thing I saw was an advertisement of a Beauty Parlor owned by the Misses Cora Reed, Edna Reily, and Ruby Rough. If you should want an appointment call Highland 384. Jane said she and Joyce were glad to be back home but wouldn't take a thousand dollars for what they had seen. That's what I call an illuminating letter. Yes? My parents kept me posted on the news from home so I learned that Robert Phillips was teaching Frenchg Thomas Prince, Arithmeticg Joyce Schaefer, Latin, at old Jeff. High. After reading all this interesting and exciting news, I decided I had better get my tea-room going . CI had named it the Glen-Loul. It was a big success from the first and I hardly had time to breath. In the Spring I placed my tea-room in capable hands and took a vacation. Instead of traveling straight through, I stopped off a few days at different towns. The first one was Jacksonville. I stayed there for two days. The first person I met was Glenna Childress who was living with her sister. We had supper together then went to a theater. The feature picture was very good, but the thing we enjoyed most was Italian Readings by William Jackson. That afternoon I spent sight-seeing. I went through every store on Main Street. You know women! I visited the 5 and 10 store, and can you guess who I saw there? Edward Conn. He was a floor walker. While I was talking to him I learned that Charlie Bolly had opened a filling sta- tion a few blocks off Main Street. From the 5 and 10 cent store I went to an Art Studio. I was looking at a very beautiful drawing when the painter's name caught my eye. You can't imagine who it was so I'll tell you. It was Edward Harrell. You remember he used to draw very well when he was in High School. That evening I hired a car and continued on my journey home. I rode until I was tired, then I told my driver to stop at the next town which was Plant City. Here I spent the rest of the night. When I registered at the Plant City Hotel, I discovered on record the names of Bill Burke and Marie Dolan who were there on their honeymoon. The next morning when I went down to my breakfast I saw them. We talked for a long time. Dur- ing the course of our conversation Marie mentioned that Jacob Graves and Dorothy Hobson had been married and were living a few miles outside of Jeffersonville. She also said that Jesse Denzler had gone to College to study to be a doctor. That afternoon I decided to do a little shopping before moving on homeward. The thing I needed most was a pair of slippers. Before I went into the store I looked for the name and you can't imagine whose it was! Mire Bizer's! Yes sir-ee. I went in and bought a pair, after talk- ing with Mire who said he had to move to Florida on account of bad health. From the shoe store I went to a Florist's Shop where I bought orange blossoms to send to my parents. As I went in the door, I came face to face with Mary Herman. She said that she and Lorena Dierking owned the shop. In the evening while I was preparing for bed I turned on the radio and the very first thing I heard was a three-piece orchestra featuring: Richard Eichenberger, Walter Bottorfl' and Charles Harvey with Ruth Strauch singing. Once again the next day I headed homeward and didn't stop until I reached Nashville, Tenn. Here I stopped at Clarence Dorman's Hotel. Here, also, I ran into George Edgington who was now a lawyer. He said he had been receiving letters from Thelma Ford who was a dietitian. He had also been corresponding with Warren Guttermuth, who was working at the American Car and Foundry Company back home. He said he had read, in a hometown paper, where Keith Goodwin had started a poultry farm and was doing very well. After bidding him good-bye, I retired to my room. I was rather the worse for wear and tear of the past few days. It was very cool the next morning, so I called for a maid to lay a fire in the grate for me. When Vivian Robertson entered the room to perform the duty, I greeted her cheerfully but calmly-I was 'way beyond the shocking point. She said it was against house rules to stay and talk to a guest but girls will be girls, so there we were. We talked and talked. She told me that Elizabeth LaFever worked at the Hotel switch board. She also related that Geraldine Leitzman had gone abroad with her wealthy uncle. Oh, what luck! In all too short a time she said good-bye and I was left alone wondering what to do next. Not finding a ready answer to this problem, I decided to be on my way again. The last stop I made before I reached home, was at Lincoln's Birth- place in Hodgensville, Ky. Oh, it was a beautiful, restful spot after all my wanderings around. It was just after noon when I got there and I wanted go be lgome by that night. That didn't leave me much time, but I made the est o it. Wfhile I was looking at Lincoln's log cabin, a hilarious group of young girls and boys come in. Here again I was lucky in meeting some of my '32 classmates. In the crowd were: Ruth Straw, Annabel White, Kenneth Wisdom, Donald Vance, Allen Walker, Billy Willcox, and Walter Rickard. In talking to them I learned that Hazel Snyder and Pattie Rodgers had gone into training to be nurses. It was nearing four o'clock when I finally pulled away from them and struck out, once more, for home. I reached there at about eight o'clock. My friend was waiting at the station for me, was she a sight for sore eyes! The old town looked very good to me. As soon as we reached the house, Jane Keil came over and we had a great pow-wow. I told her of all the interesting surprises I had had and she told me hersg the best one of which was about a friend, few of us will forget, Reedie VanMeter! He had gone to the Hawaiian Islands where there was a bountiful quantity of curly heads to pet. I learned also from Jane that quite a few of our old high school friends had remained at home. Albert Haas had taken over his father's work, Raymond Hobson had a small lunch counter, Willard Hopper had the management of the city A8zP's, Elmo Inzer was a real estate man, Nellie Potter had taken up dress making, Chester Lane had become an insurance agent, Gene McGill and Hazel McFarland had become clerks at Gordon's big department store, and William Mannix had remained the same old milk man. John Long had become a great poet, Charles Kehrt had opened a grocery store, Rosalie Mayer had become a Beauty Expert, and Anna K. Mosgrove had gone to Reno for a divorce. That last! What is this younger generation coming to? At 12 o'clock Jane said she must be going and would see me in the morning. Maybe, said I, with a whole lot of emphasis on it, too. I felt that after cramming all those exciting experiences into my being, I was about loaded down and ready for a long night's sleep. -Glenna Mae Dietrich. 0 O Illlllll IIIIIIII mann Illlllll Illlllll Illlllll llllllll llllllll Illlllll Illlllll Illlll I llllllll llllllll llllllll llllllll llllllll llllllll llllllll ll IIHIIII llllllll llllllll llllllll .V Illllll' ' llll I Illll 'llllll Iu IllIl I IIIIIIII Gly r Gfupir Senior Class History HE HARDY explorers of the Senior Class venture into the deepest jungles of the land of study . We are determined to delve into the deepest and most hidden wells of learning and dig out boundless knowledge before returning to the usual life. We are led onward and over almost in- surmountable obstacles by worthy leader Richard Eichenberger and his assistants Edward Bolly, Marie Dolan, Edward Shepard, and -Charles Scott. We pitch camp in the heart of the forests and set out boldly to extract hidden knowledge. We explore the unknown valleys of Science and Arith- metic. We ascend to the topless peaks of Religion. We are ever harassed by our foes, the beasts of the world, Latin, Stenography, Typing, and Book- keeping. The warriors of thertribe venture forth to battle against rival tribes on the hard-Wood. With such luminaries as Sam Cowling, Richard Eichen- berger, George Edgington, A. P. Haas, John Long, Louie Perkins, and Eddie Mclverg they won the Intramural League Crown and are expected to do big things in the Tourney at the end of the league. We venture into the land of Dramatics and now stage a wonderful success, The Count and the Co-ed , an operetta in two acts. The Senior Play, The Blossoming of Mary Ann , in five acts was a huge financial success. And then we stage a final battle against our foes, examinations, and make a final quest for education. At last we emerge from the forest victorious against all obstacles, and abounding in learning. We are feted by our friends, the Juniors, at the J unior-Senior Reception. And now the crowning of our labor,-Graduation! Perseverance meant Success of ninety-seven successful adventurers, for after four years they had completed their search. -Ruth Stfrauch., '32. Baseball, had been dis- continued for two years in our school. Most of the basketball players are on the team, such as Catcher Hollenbach, First Baseman Lewis, Sec- ond Baseman Rauth and several others who have played some baseball before this year. Jane Kell Secretary .................... Ruth Howard Vice President .,.. Florence Manners Treasurer ..,..,..,.,.,.,.....o. Joy Prentice Sports Editor ..............,............................. Charlotte Gibson HE girls of the Jeffersonville High School have taken a noticeable step this year in the form of athletics. Beginning with the organiza- tion of a Girls' Athletic Association , a national organization, they have held meetings, planned play-days, and otherwise promoted athletics for girls, a thing formerly neglected in this school for some years. A varsity team was organized which spent much time in preparation for opposition against three Louisville teams. Foreign competition has previously been an unthought of thing in Girls' Athletics here but as all three teams were composed of girls from the Y. W. C. A., school authorities felt justified in granting their permission. Members of the Girls' Varsity Basketball team this year Were: Joyce Worrall, Captain, Olive Reed, For- ward, Lucille Reidlinger, Forwardg Joyce Schaefer, Guard, Charlotte Gib- son, Guardg Jane Keil, Guard. Subs: Lorena Dierking, Louise Werner, Valma Linck, Virginia Higgins, Rose Schnell, Margaret Mclver, Mary Man- ners, LaVaughn Haymaker, Josephine Beutel, Jane Wilcox, Emmadale Al- len, Mary Louise Clapp, Thelma Trompeter and Margie Glaser. The team will be considerably handicapped next year by the loss of Worrall, Keil, Schaefer and Dierking, who will graduate. Basketball season for the girls closed with an Inter-Class Team Tournament held Wednesday, March 30, 1932 at 3:15 P. M. The championship game between the Senior Jail-Birds and the Junior Fighting Angels was played Thursday, March 31. The Junior Angels astonished themselves and the Seniors by coming out on top With the score 11-8. Spectacular playing Was displayed by both teams and the girls certainly deserve credit for their splendid game. Jeifersonville became quite prominent in the state this year, as it was the meeting place of Women athletic directors of Southern Indiana. Over 160 students and physical education instructors assembled in the new gym- nasium Saturday morning, February 27, 1932 at 12:30, for a general Play ! Day and Basketball Discussion. First, the members of the Varsity team gave a basketball demonstration of the new method of putting the ball in play at center. Then, an exhibition on plays and fouls was given by the varsity team. Following this, games and contests were held, taking up the afternoon. After light refreshments, the Play Day dismissed and the tired, happy girls departed for their home towns. We hope they will come again in the future. In addition to basketball, the G. A. A. has worked on, and plans to work on, many other athletic activities. Tumbling, a sport requiring much skill and practice, has been eagerly welcomed among the girls of the high school. After spring practice, Miss Danner gave an exhibition of tumbling before the student body. Volleyball saw its first season for some time among the girls this year. After a small amount of practice earlier in the season, the girls resumed regular spring practice and became quite ex- perienced in the game by the close of school. After the close of the Basket- ball season, Miss Danner organized a Baseball team. The team used oflicial play-ground rules and played on a field. Swimming took its place among the sports this year. Each Thursday afternoon, the girls went to the Y. W. C. A. at Louisville and spent one-hour working on various strokes and life-saving. The swimming season closed with a Swimming Meet and Stunt, in May. Tennis has just entered on the list of sports required for points on the point system. Each girl must play twenty-five hours of Tennis before she can claim her maximum number of points. Another sport eligible for points is Hiking. In order to gain the required number of points for Hiking, the girls are required to hike fifty miles. This hiking must be for the delight of walking, as errands etc., do not count. At least thirty or more girls of the Physical Education classes attended a Play Day held at Hanover College, April 9, 1932. All the girls had a thorough good time as well as experience. The years Work has been enjoyed immensely by each and every girl and it certainly has been a profitable way of spending leisure time. Next year, we hope to see the G. A. A. to be bigger and better than ever. Won't we have lots to look forward to during our summer vacation, girls? -Charlotte Gibson, Sports E'dfito1'. We never needed it so we give it away: 1. Keep that schoolgirl complexion. 2. Never be late for school. 3. Always do your home Work. 4. Stay awake in class. 5. Pay your class dues. 6. Buy an Annual. 7. Don't fail to go to Indianapolis State Tourney. 8. Go out for Athletics. 9. Play the game square. ' 10. Prepare for examinations. 11. Don't worry. 12. Laugh it off. 13. Don't duck Gym class. , 14. Never use the same excuse twice. 15. Always be prepared. 16. Get ads for the Annual, it pays to advertise. 17. Never say, You can't do that . 18. Don't walk in the corridors. It looks better to see you practicing for the track team. 19. Don't take a pencil with you to Arithmetic Class. It is unduly bur- densome. . 20. Don't say anything unfavorable about the class of 1932. We think we're O. K. and opinions to the contrary may not be to your advantage. AMID the general routine of the great life of the city there was sounded an uncommon noise. The unmistakable shriek of the great siren was heard. Something most extraordinary had happened to be sure. The very wheels of progress seemed to stop to inquire just what was the cause. From every window heads jammed, people crowded together in the streets, running from group to group. The piercing scream grew louder. The windows vibrated in answer, the mighty walls of the skyscrapers threw back an answering scream. Suddenly the cause was announced and like to setting a match to dried leaves, the news spread in every conceivable di- rection. People stood amazed, others shouted and danced, and still more gravely nodded their heads, and aye, some even collapsed. It was a shock to everyone, even to me.
