PAUL DIDIER J'TOWN'S TOP ACHIEVERS j'rown students have always excelled in all academic areas, but several students have particularly shone this year in thtir individual fields. We should all be proud of these students who have distin- guished themselves and their school through scholastic competition. This year PAUL DIDIER received one of the greatest honors ever awarded to a student at frown. On November 11, 1976, Paul was awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for achievement, one of the highest awards which a high school ROTC student can receive. The medal was presented by a national organization of recipients of the Medal of Honor and other high awards presented by each branch of service. Awarded to him by Army Major john Whitehead Ill, a Vietnam hero, the medal was the eleventh Paul has won in past years. The Math department is delighted by the achievements of SONIA LUNA in the louisville Regional Science Fair, which was held on March 27, 1976. Sonia entered a proiect entitled Probabil- ity and Accuracy in Using Statis- tics, in which she devised a method for predicting the scores of basketball games. Her project was judged first in the area of Mathe- matics in the Senior Division. She also placed first in the Behavioral and Social Science Division. For this honor she received S25 and a certificate awarded by the U of L Department of Psychology. She received a Certificate of Scientific Achievement from the United States Army as well. This award was presented to her after her pro- ject was judged to be one of the best five in the Senior Division. We congratulate Sonia for this honor. Four -I'town students, SHERRI SON, PHILLIP ROBINSON, JO MILLER, and ANGELA HAIR- STON, brought glory to the lan- guage department by their success in the State Spanish Contest, spon- sored by the American Association of Spanish Teachers. Sherri placed second among Senior High Spanish Il students, while Phillip placed fourth in the same category. jo was first among junior High students taking Spanish ll. Angela was first in her category of Spanish I stu- dents. Over the summer of 1976, CHE- RYL HUNTZINGER and BECKY SHORE represented ,IHS ar Girls' State, while PAUL DIDIER and BRAD HALL attended Boys' Stare for our school. Sponsored by the American Legion Auxillary, these conventions are designed as exercises in govern- ment. The Girls' State Convention was held for one week at Morehead. Becky served as a Congress- woman at the convention, while Cheryl worked in the Senate. Through their activities at the meeting, the girls learned the proce- dures involved in passing a bill into law. Paul also received two individ- ual honors at Boys' State. Paul was voted Party Chairman on the city level, as well as a member of the City Board of Trustees. HAROLD YANKEY eamed a special honor in the spring of 1976 in the field of English. Harold sub- mitted a composition to the Ken- tucky Council of Teachers of Eng- lish for consideration for publica- tion in their quarterly magazine, KENTUCKY WRITING BUL- LETIN. His essay, Looking From the Inside Out With a Smile, was printed in the Spring, 1976 edition. SHERRI SON and KATHY STEARNS brought honor to them- 035, SONIA LUNA selves and frown High through their selection as National Merit Finalists. Along with the majority of their class, they took the PSAT test in the fall of their junior year. On the basis of their high scores, which were among the top V25 in the nation, they became National Merit Semi-Finalists. After com- pleting an extensive application and achieving an equivalent score on the SAT fScholastic Aptitude Testj, they were notified of their standing as finalists in late Febru- ary, 1977. AMY CROUCI-I HAROLD YANKEY dents as these makes ,I'town's drama department one of the best around, Four members of the band received superior ratings in solo competition at the Kentucky Music Education Association competition at U of L on Match 25. These stu- dents were AMY CROUCH, HAROLD YANKEY, MARILYN McREYNOLDS, and PEGGY CLAYTON. Such talented musi- cians as these make the Marching MARILYN McREYNOLDS PEGGY CLAYTON Chargers one of the county's best bands. After a lengthy period of rehearsals and auditions, seven J'town students were selected to participate in All-State Chorus this year. Nine j'town students were selected from over thirty j'town choir members competing for a place at the county auditions. Of these ninc students, DOTTIE O'BRIAN, TONY ERNSPIKER, BOB MCDONALD DARRELL LAY DOTTIE O'BRIEN WALLY LESLEY BOB McDONALD, SCOTT BRADFORD, NOEL CLARK, WALLY LESLEY, and DARRELL IAY were chosen for t.he chorus, Between March 10 and 12, they will rehearse for their performance in Lexington on March 12 at the Ken- tucky Music Edueators Association. KATHY STEARNS is one of j'town's finest musicians. In the summer of 1976, she was chosen from over sixty competitors as the winner of the concerto contest at Sewanee Summer Music Center. This meant that she served as the soloist with the Sewanee Festival Orchestra. Kathy was also the win- ner oi the Third District Women's Club Music Contest this year.
