Ten SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 38 Bryce, Martha, Emma Lou, Melvin, and Marion start- ed their long journey through school together at Jefferson while Carl, Col- leen, Miriam, Melody, and Bill endeavored to start at New Corydon, Eu- gene, Alice, Wayne and Emma Jean each attended a different school. Learning enough, and doing our share of damage in the grades we en- tered high school in '46. By the time we were Freshmen our group had enlarged to nineteen. Between hayrides and school work only thirteen recuperated enough dur- ing the summer to enter the Sophomore year. In our Junior year We gained one member and proved to be very in- dustrious by sponsoring the Fall Festival and presenting the play UDIZZY AND DAFFY.' We climaxed the year with the Jr. and Sr. reception. Now as the Senior Class of 1950 we feel that it is a great honor to be graduating in the half-century. Many great events are predicted for the next fifty years which we shall witness. We shall endeavor to do our part in the promotion of things worth while in this age of progress We chose for our President Colleen Kelly, Vice President, Marion De- Boltg Secretary, Martha Baileyg and Treasurer, Alice Myers. We are proud of the fact that 6 of our 7 boys are varsity members and Alice serves as varsity cheerleader. On December 22nd and 23rd we presented the play HBOLTS AND NUTS, also on February 7, we sponsored a chili supper. These were but two of our many activities. As this school year comes to a close we all remember the happy days we spent here and leave with this thoughtg May the other classes of J. H. S. have as many happy days as we have had. One teacher seemed to get more than his share when he, Mr. Boller, was appointed class sponsor. The Juniors proved to be very business-like and elected these ollicersz Darrel Kuhn, Pres., Patsy Johnson, Vice Pres., Anna Smitley, Sec., and Floreine Luginbill, Treas. The Juniors representing their class in basketball and softball were: Gerald Miller, Darrel Kuhn, Lyle Tumbleson, Norman Haines and David Vlfhittredge. Betty Wendel served as cheerleader. Gther members of the Junior Class are Ruth Lehman and Donald Gerber. The Junior Fall Festival made history for the class this year and they are now in the process of selecting and presenting a play. Fourteen I UN IOR PROPHECY While on business in Chicago, in 1960, I registered at the luxurious Patwell Hotel. While browsing through the library, I came upon a book entitled Patwell History. To my amazement, I found that the owners were none other than Bill Patterson and Eugene Wellman, That evening before retiring, I managed to have a chat with them and was informed that Bryce Christy was also making his home in Chicago. The next morning I decided to pay him a short visit before leaving for my home again in Oak- land, California. I was greeted at the door by an attractive young lady whom I supposed was his wife but soon learned that he was still single and she was only his secretary. Little did I realize that my trip home would be so interesting. When I stopped at a filling station in the outskirts of Omaha, Nebraska. I was amazed to see Carl Spangler standing in the doorway. He serviced my car and also invited me in for a friendly chat with his wife, the former Miss Colleen Kelly. She told me that Martha Bailey and Emma Jean Switzer were co-owners of a ritzy dress shop, THE MARJEANH in New York City. Having spent more time than I expected there, it was soon time to stop for lunch. I decided to stop at the Belleview Cafe, and was pleased to meet the owner, Marion DeBolt. I complimented him on the delicious food and he told me it had been prepared by his finacee, Miriam Weaver. While driving through Denver Colorado, I saw the magnificent Evan- gelical United Brethren Church. It was my luck to be passing just as Melvin and Melody were coming out the door. It was obvious that the knot had just been tied. They were both smiling and looked even hap- pier than I had remembered them in my school days. As I was watching television in the home of one of my relatives, where I was staying for the week-end, I was surprised to see the familiar face of Emma Lou Morningstar appear on the screen. She was going to sing her latest hit tune, 'tWin My Heart and You've Got My Mother, Too. As I continued my journey homeward and was driving through Salt Lake City, Utah, I suddenly had to apply my brakes to keep from hitting a jaywalker, whom I immediately recognized as Alice Myers. No cars being near, I stopped and talked with her for a few minutes. She told me that she was now a star in motion pictures. I noticed that she mentioned the name Wayne quite often so I asked her who he was and she told me that it was Wayne Gerber and that he was to star with her in her next picture. Fifteen 1 'W 14 4. S. to further their education and enjoy themselves to the greatest extent. The group chose Jack Wendel as their president, Gerald R. Miller vice president and Larry Miller as secretary-treasurer. As is the Sophomores' duty we initiated the Freshman. The class held a class party at the school house in October. Our class is very well represented on the basketball team. Jack Wen- del is a substitute for the varsity team. Mr. Claren Neuenschwander is the class sponsor. When Juanita moved to Geneva the office position was transferred to Barbara Lehman. Mrs. Davis was our class sponsor during this year. We're proud of our six Freshman boys who are out for basketball. They are: Bob Switzer, Francis Wellman, Dick Stuber, Earl Johnson, Jim Patch, and Donald Charleston fwho is the first team student managerj. Our initiation day was a great success. The Hartford softball team thought us quite absurd. The end of the initiation day was celebrated with a hay ride sponsored by the sophomore class. On the night of Jefferson's Junior Fall Festival our class was honored when Patty Kelly was crowned queen. IOKES Topics of the day- Maid- All the guests came in beautiful cars and wore gorgeous clothes and the most wonderful jewelry? - Cook- Gracious, what did they talk about? Maid-NUS. The modern way- Buffum- How can I cure my brother George of snoring? Scuffum- It's easy-use kindness, co-operation, tact, and stuff an old sock in his mouth. What a let down- Clerk- Is the fountain pen a birthday surprise for your son? Customer- I'll say it is-he's expecting a convertible coupe. Mel- Since I met you I can't eat or drink. Lil- Gracious, why not? Mel-'Tm broke. Lil- Oh, well, you can't use any egg until itls broke. Splendid career- Perkins- I feel I am fitted for big things. I'd like a position with five thousand men under me. Gherkins- Fine, dear boy-why not a job mowing grass in a cemetery? Advice- Poke- What a doctor! He told me to bury myself in my work. Moke--'fWell, what's wrong with that? Poke-'Tm a concrete mixer. Stranger-t'Only twelve o'c1ock? I thought it was more than that. Native- Around here, stranger, that's all it ever gets. Then we start over. Henry-- Hurry up, dear, or we'll be late. Henrietta- Now quit fussing, Henry-I've been telling you for the last half hour I'd be ready in a minute. Young Mother-t'Why so gloomy? Young Father-'LI was just thinking-here we spend a year trying to get the baby to talk, and the next twenty trying to get her to shut upf, Fifty-six MEMOIRS fAll quotations taken from the first copy of the Jeffersonian, printed in 1922.5 From this relic the staff of this present Jeffersonian found some very enlightening facts. One was the article that told us about the location of the High School. The build- ing is located in the exact middle of the township on a plot of ground containing 2lf2 acres. The general contract, heating and Ventilating, electrical wiring, plumbing and light plant totaled 5'p46,079.l2. We were amazed when we recognized some familiar names located in the Freshman enrollment. Wilma Snoke Stolz and Orison Stolz were listed. Jefferson has been an in- stigator in many things, hasn't it? Going on we found more familiar names in the grades. There were forty-six students in the first two grades, among them were Therman Charleston, Blaine Bailey, and Herbert Miller. Trailing by one, the third and fourth with their forty-five students embarked on the educational road. Vera Anspaugh Kelly and Chester Adams were among the third graders. Called the Overflow, grades five and six had thirty-eight on the roll. Cecil Smitley and Walter Amstutz were members of this group. The seventh and eighth grades had some interesting characters too. Chalmer Smitley was one. It was amazing to see that Jefferson in f'22 was taking part in activities. A Parent- Teachers organization was working. 'LThe meetings were held every two weeks, and it is safe to say that over 150 people were present at every meeting. Not to be outdone in athletics either, the high school had both girls and boys en- tered in the county tournament. In the field of music, We found a Jefferson Center Orchestra with a membership of thirty-two. The annual contained jokes, poems, and advertising in addition to the things men- tioned. We believe the school had reason to be justly proud of their production in 22 , and we have endeavored to make our production this year one the school and com- munity can be proud of. Things are a little Sideways. 18. Study Hall???? IOKES Really?? Men talk just as much as women, but with this one difference: women all chatter at the same time and apparently none misses a word anyone else has said. Men can't do this trick-they have to take turns. Only men say it- If a man reaches into a hat and pulls out a rabbit, it's magic. If a woman reaches into her handbag for a door key and pulls out adoor key, it's a miracle. Small shave- Ma- Really, I'm worried about Junior's arithmetic. He told me that 7 and 4 make 12. Pa- Well, I think that's good for a little shaver-he only missed it by 2. Tastes will differ- The bride chose a gown of white marquisette over satin with a high neckline, off the shoulder yoke, finished with chantilly lice, a fitted bodice, dong fitted sleeves coming to a point at the skirt and a full hoop wrist. fTaken from a newspaper misprintj Examiner- Now, soldier, what was the heaviest you ever weighed and the lightest? Soldier-'tAbout 165 was the heaviest, and 7 pounds 9 ounces the lightest. In so doing We dedicate this volume of the Jeffersonian to former students and graduates. Although Jefferson students have been making history for only a little over a quarter of a century, fond memories will live on for generations. The lasting contributions from our predecessors have indebted us. We dedicate this yearbook in gratitude to those who went before us and made it possible that we could enjoy the pleasures of the school they knew.
