We have been going here for twelve years now. We think that without these twelve years we would be in bad shape. We have learned many things here and we go away very happy with ourselves. Many of the smaller children just stepping into it thinks it looks very big and lonely. This is soon forgotten when you meet the grand people who are to guide you through the next portion of your life. we wish now to thank you, the public, for making it possible. We don't know what we would do without you and our grand teachers. We hope that all present and future children of Jefferson Township may have 12 years as beneficial and en- joyable as ours have been. fi Q E 0- 'I 1541603 We dedicate our yearbook to Mr. C.V. Mcilhaney, the present 5th and 6th grade teacher at Jefferson. He has dedicated his life to teaching and guiding young people, having some 34 years experience as an elementary teacher, coach, high school teacher, and principal. For six years prior to the 1953-54 school year he was principal at Jefferson. We use this method to give Mr. McE1haney our sincere thanks for helping us in our quest for a high school education. aw-W 'W WV' ,,,,,,,,wf-,.mvM wwwn NNW ' x ,,,,....,, mmm W fwsw'- ww' , V ' ' ' :Q9.,MwLM ' wmmwmggggw .wN'f2.kwm,fAN. fm . These six, Lamoine DeHaven, Harold Searles, Dean Smith, Jim Pinkerton, Peggy McCoy, and Patricia Wesco, along with Hoe Wilson, Donald Elser, Harold Ralston, and Rose Harlan met and conquered the usual problems that confront most first- graders. when we met again in l9h3, we found that we had gained Peggy Ross, Joseph Kline, and Josephine Kline We were promoted to the third grade and advanced to the room of Miss Vilna Smith. We gained Mona Stanley, Jim Rouch, and Jim Gulley, and lost Joe Wilson, Donald Elser, Joseph and Josephine Kline. When we met the next fall, ready for our fourth grade, we had added Allen Kindley, Phyllis Hess, and Larry Chapin. Jim Rouch left us, making our class fourteen in number. In the fall of 1956, we moved up to Mrs. Armfield's room looking forward to what 1.' the year would hold for us. Keith Shideler, Larry Sprowl, and Carolyn Brains joined moved away leaving sixteen in our class our group while Jim Gully In the sixth grade we found that Bill Byers had come to spend a few years vith us. Phyllis Hess and Larry Chapin left our class, reducing our number to fifteen. When we met at school in the fall of l9L8, we hardly knew what to expect of 'The Great Big High School learned that our daily routine was much Siden. Very shortly we changed, but soon we grew accustomed to the ways of our older classmen. Dewayne Baker and Nona Fox joined us to share the experience of our junior high years. In our eighth year Bill Yeiter, Maurice Campbell, and Jack Johnson came, enlarging our class to twenty. In 1950, we entered Jefferson High School as green freshmen. We were cordially welcomed by the sophomores at initiation, our first big event of the year. Our class entered High School with 20 members with Mrs. Bonham as our sponsor. When we gathered at the school as sophomores we found that Barbara Forrester and Pauline Osborn had joined us. This year it was our privilege to initiate the freshmen. This year our class presented a one act play for Patron's Day which was enjoyed hy all. Pat Pope joined us at the beginning of our Junior year and Pegay Ross left us to get married. le -vwf were a very busy class as this was our first money-making year. We collected scrap, sold Christmas cards, had a Penny Supper, and presented our class play entitled WDesperate Ambrosen. We were all very glad to receive our class rings which we thought were very nice. In our Senior year we gave our class play, WShoot the Worksn. We chose our class motto nNothing Ventured, Nothing Gainedng our class colors, maroon and gray, and our flower, the yellow car- nation. I 1541603 CLASS PROPHECY or 1964 One Christmas as I was walking down Main Street with my arms full of packages I bumped into a very well dressed man, and fell flat. As he was helping me pick up my packages, I looked up and saw that it was Jack Johnson, who had become a well known peace-time atomic household furnishing manufacturer. bince he was on his way to an important dinner engagement we parted but before he left he invited me to his home on Park Avenue, one of the wealthest districts in the city. I arrived at his home promptly at eight o'clock and was ushered into the beautiful living-room where Patricia Johnson, the former Patricia Wesco, was sitting in a big chair reading a story to Pamala Jane, Jon Robert Jr., and Sally Ann. It was almost overso I waited until she was finished and the children had scampered off to bed. Then Jack came in and we began to talk over old times. uwhere in the world is Larry Sprowl?U I asked Jack. He told me that Larry had returned to Texas shortly after school closed and was a big oil man there. Lamoine DeHaven was a big olive stuffer in California and had married Marilyn Laroe the famous movie starlet. Pat asked me if I knew anything about Keith and Jim. I said yes, Keith owned a famous chain of drugstores and Jim Pinkerton started as a worker in a manufacturing company and had finally become president of the company. He and the former Mona Stanley had married and had twin boys. We,all knew about Nona Fox since her husband had discovered an important medicine for the treatment of Cancer. And Barbara Forrester whom we saw every week on television in the comedyuMiss Livermore Rides Again' Pauline Osborn had become a nurse and had risen to the position of Head Nurse in a hospital in Denver, Colorado. Dutch Campbell, a steeple jack, was working on a building that Joe Searles the famous architect had designed. Dean bmith become a very successful farmer right at home in Jefferson Twp. Peggy McCoy had become a great artist in Music and had recently played in Carnegie Hall where she received great reviews from the critics. While she was striving for this honor she worked as a hash slinger in a two-bit resturant on 95th. Street. Allen Kindley had become an undertaker in So. Bend , Indiana. Then the talk turned to me. what had I been doing since I finished high school? After finishing mu work at ball State Teachers College where I received my teaching degree, I taught the Sth and 6th grade for two years, after which I married a young man whom I had met in college while he was studying for the law profession. I have one child, Elizabeth Denise. Who am I? It takes 5000 nuts and bolts to put a car to- gether but only one nut under the wheel to scatter then all over the landscape Almost every child would learn to write sooner if he did his homework on wet 1541603 ROOM 4 First Row: Left to Right Mr. C, V. The ultimate aim so far with the 5th and 6th grades is to see the practical needs for reading, writing, and arithmetic. It is also important to help develope the social life, that responsibilities may be accepted and discharged in a creditable manner. Citizenship is an overall aim throughout much of our formal education. The immediate aims of education are presented to the child through his textbooks. All this is reflected in the grades the child receives and it is hoped parents will carefully critize and aid be given where it is needed. Close cooperation between the pupil-parent- and teacher is needed to accomplish these aims and objectives. 15416115 Room 3 Top How, Left to Right Robert Piqune, Kenneth Freck, Larry Trout, Gerald Arnold, Larry Broom, Mary Armfield-Teacher, Deana Clements, Danny Spahr, Charles Poulson, Daniel Mossburg, David Banter, Wayne Osborn. The Masquerade Party visited each class room and came back to the home room and enjoyed contests, games, and refreshments. Ruth Ellen Love was awarded the prize for the prettiest dressed, and Kenneth Freck for the ugliest dressed. On January 8th, Jane Ann Reber came from LaFontaine to join our group in the fourth grade. The entire group participated in the Christmas program presented by the grades. We had our usual Christmas exchange of gifts. On February 12th, again we turned our lessons aside for the re- maining hour of the day to enjoy our Valentines and refreshments. 1541603 Room 2 Top Row, Left to Right Dylett Charles, Betty Simmons, Marjorie Smith, Nancy Taylor, Rosemary Spence, David Broom, James Ioung, Judith Luckey, Annette Suter, Sharon Cramer, Vivian Moon, Ann Kariger. Teacher, Mary Brown A total of SAL new words have been introduced during the year in the second grade and 899 in the third grade reading programs. Many others we should be able to work out independently We try to make out work more meaningful and yet interesting through the use of visual aids. We are very fortunate to have movies and strip films for this purpose. We avail ourselves of both the WLS and the Purdue University school radio programs. By this method, our science, reading, and music programs are enriched. We have ciphering matches, spelling bees, and word contests which gives us necessary drill practice. We hope to learn and practice those principles which will make us the best American citizens possible and we are working toward that end. 1D4lbU5 - s 3 4 Room I Top Row-Left to Right Marcia Shaw, Patricia DeHaven, Phyllis Wood, Daniel Clayborn, Linda Holmes, Keith Stanley, Richard Harrell, James Reust, Vickie Eriddy, and Ronald Brinneman. The objectives in the first grade are from 300 to A00 sight words, names of letter sounds for each of the consonants and the short and long sounds for the vowels, the ability to work out three and four letter words, count to 100 by 2's, 5's, l0's, and the number combinations to ten. To attain these objectives ve have nine work books and three pre-primers Also the primer, first reader and much supplementary material. The children especially like the strip films and movies they see. They are under the leadership of Mrs. Stech. The Student Council is an organization, representing the entire student body. The underlying principle of the Student Council is participation in school government. It is not Uself-governmentn, neither is it an organization designed to nrunn the school. Rather the Council provides a means by which students may share and participate in organizating affairs. In other words, it is an attempt to teach the principle of democracy by participation. Members of the Council are chosen by vote of their classmates, after which the members organize and elect officers. The entire student body has agreed to co- operate by accepting any decisions of the council as final. A few of the accomplishments of the Council to date are: Making identification board for gym, fixing wall clock in assembly, and appointment of loud speaker operator for basketball games. We are now working on the program for Patrons Day.
