Many boys and girls grew up during that time without the chance to get a high school education because of the expense and the inconven- ience of driving to the neighboring townships to attend high school. A few of the people of the township kept up the fight for a new modern school wherein the boys and girls of the township might enjoy all the advantages of the most up to date schools. This ambition was realized when in 192k the new building was completed. Ground had been purchased for the site of the school several years ago, but due to the war and the business depression that followed it, work was delayed until 1923 when contracts were let and work actually begun. ln September of l92b, a total CDPOILMBDC of 232 stu- dents were transported to the new building in seven school busses. The trustee and teachers at that time were: , Joseph L. Wiley, Trustee G. I, Doris Detamore, have tried to write this poem For your enjoyment and to keep in your home, To give you a few of the Senior.personalities And to give you the true realities. faery lgrolalzecg f l963j It was snowing heavily outside and I had just curled up in the easy chair to enjoy a good book which I could only read after the children were tucked in bed. Susan and Joe, Jr. had been in bed for almost an hour now and Joe had gone to town to bowl with some old school buddies. I had just found my place in the novel and had read only a few words when the shrill ringing of the doorbell jarrea me back to reality. I was most surprised to see an old school mate of mine, Kathron Hudson, loaded down with luggage. After the first moment of sur- prise had vanished, I invited her inside and immediately we began to talk about old times and ask each other about others whom we had not seen for sometime. Kathron told me she was on her way home from overseas where she had entertained the troops in Korea. Her stage name was Lily Pond and she had spent several years on the stage. while she was overseas it seems that she was singing for a group of soldiers in the PX and just as she was finishing her first song an orderly came up with a note which re dg HHello Lily, I know you will be surprised to receive this but I cou1dn't let you leave the Post without requesting one of my favorites, nBack Home Again in Ind1ana.u will you please sing it for me? Signed, Dudley Campbell It couldn't just be coincidence - the name and the song, so I did sing the song as my last number and immediately hurried to visit with the sender. Sure enough it was Jefferson's Dudley and he had been working in the PX since his arrival in Korea. No doubt his training in the ice creanxroom at Jefferson paved the way for this assignment! I asked if Kathron had seen Jeanette and Charlie Lee lately. No, she said she hadn't but the last time she received a letter from Jeanette they were operating a chicken ranch out west. We talked and chattered so fast and furiously that I expected to hear Susan come pattering downstairs with her big Teddy Bear, Jeffersonian, which was manufactured in Indianapolis in the factory owned by Martha and Paul Harrold. Martha was the Business Manager, of course. We chuckled together about the old days at Jefferson when Myrtle and Gary were having their little day by day spatsl It seems, they are still both very temperamental. They have formed one of the best dance teams in the country but never have married. They couldn't get along long enough to get a license and get to a minister before a disagreement. Last winter Kathron had spent some time in Miami and while there she stayed in a fashionable Hotel run by Agatha Highley and Pat Gentle. They were really in the money and thoroughly enjoying the heavenly sunshine in Florida. We discovered that we had accounted for all of our classmates except Esther. Upon graduation, she had attended a Bible Seminary andkperhaps, by now, has put in several years in foreign missionary wor . We heard the car drive in the garage and presently Joe would be comi in the house. who is Joe? The h b q f h thisngrophecy - the former Doris Detamorg? an 0 t 6 vriter of I JJ' I aaa wiory In the year of 1941, there were 14 uneducated little folks who went to Mrs. Stech to start their learning in the first grade. In- cluded in those were Gary Brinneman, Martha Shaw, Jeanette Thorne, Agatha Highley, Doris Detamore, Arthur Bollhofer, Wayne Barnes, Linda Hodson, Frances Beady, Joyce Rheams, James Dickey, Herbert Nichols, Martha Cross and Hester Whiteman. Those starting and fin- ishing their 12 years of education at good 'ole Jefferson are Gary Brinneman, Martha Shaw, Jeanette Thorne, Agatha Highley and Doris Detamore. We moved on to the second grade gaining two new students who were Morgan Thornburg and August Loftis. Linda Hodson moved away. We were promoted to the third grade so we moved into the next room. Miss Vilna Smith was our new teacher. We gained four new students and they were Kathron Hudson, Esther Pugh, Hester Whiteman, and Donna Keplinger. Those moving away were Frances Beady, James Dickey, Herbert Nichols and Lucretia Smith. In the fourth grade Larry Hanley came into our class and Arthur Bollhofer, Martha Cross, August Loftls, Joyce Rheams, Morgan Thornburg and Hester Whiteman left us. As we kept 'growing upn we advanced to the fifth grade with Mrs. Mary Armfield being our new teacher. Wayne Barnes and Donna Keplinger moved away. In the sixth grade Sarah Carvey and Daisy Bennett came, but Daisy Bennett moved away before the year was over. AND THEN IT HAPPENED! We were finally on the high school side. And of course there wasn't anyone bigger than us until some of the Seniors and other upperclassmen changed our minds. Or did they ever change our minds?? Our sponsor for our Jr. High years was Mrs. Bon- ham. Lowell Crowe and Elwin Buck came during our 7th grade. Elwin Buck left at the end of our 7th grade year. Monet Coble and Bar- bara Cassel came and left in our eighth grade. Then we found ourselves coming to school one day with every- thing on backwards, lipstick all over our faces, and anything else which would make us look like 'green freshmenn. WE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL! Mr. Thompson was our sponsor starting that year and has put up with us every since. We sponsored a skating party that year to raise a 'Little moneyn. We gained two new students, Dudley Campbell and Pat Boyer although Pat Boyer moved away before the year was over. Sarah Carvey and Larry Hanley also moved away after the end of the year. When we became Sophmores it was our turn to initiate the Fresh- men, which was an unforgettable experience. Patricia Gentis and Harry Ellis came into our class, but Harry was only with us a few months and then moved away. Lowell Crowe also moved away. In our Junior year we sold Christmas cards, had charge of the ice cream store and pencil store, gave our play 'MISS JIMMY' which was a great success and held a penny supper which also was a good success. In our Senior year we gained one new student, Myrtle Sullivan. We worked in the ice cream store the first semester, gave our play 'THE DAFFY DILLSW and started on our yearbook. We chose our class motto 'No Victo Without Labor - our class color w silver: and our flower , the American Beauty Rose.s' po der blue and Now as we draw near the end of our 12 years of education we want to especially thank Mr. Thompson, our sponsor, for helping our class to be a success. Also we want to thank all of the other teachers who have helped us through our school years. Thanks again. add , We, the Senior Class, will our ability to be Seniors to the Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. We, the Senior girls, will our many slumber parties to the Junior girls.
