FARMER'S CO-OP, MATTHEWS UPLHNIJ CLASS HISTURY On August 29, 1935, there entered jefferson Grade School twenty-five little tots who came to get an education. Our teacher was Miss Nancy Robison. On November 12, we had as visitors Mrs. Earl Vance, Mrs. Merritt Strange, and Mrs. William Selzer. During March and April there was a severe epidemic of whooping cough. Those suffering most were Patty Selzer and Sammy Wilson. We entered the second grade with Miss jane Duckwall as our teacher. That was the year we began to write our names instead of printing them. junior Reece joined us at that time. We then entered the third grade with Miss Ruth Kline as our teacher. XWe had two new students, Patty Lou Howard and jean Witmer. That year brought just a little more study. In the fourth grade Mrs. Carrie Horner was our teacher. That year Gerald Grile left to attend an- other school. At that time we learned our multiplication tables. How hard we thought they were! When we were fifth graders we took a few more subjects such as health, history, and science. That year our teacher was Miss Cora Marine. We then entered the sixth grade with Miss Irene Hults as our teacher. Gerald Grile came back to finish the remainder of his school days with us and jane Bragg came as a new student. The next year we climbed the stairs and were seventh graders. Were we proud! That year brought new students, Mary Kearns and Bill Hargrave. junior Reece left us to go to another school and Don Phipps started the second semester with us. The next year we had twenty-three students when Bob Her- ring joined the class. The hrst year of high school brought several new faces-Ronald Lamb, Ralph and Robert Wlim- mer, Chrystal johnson, Ruth Kreutsberg, and Mary jane Maddox. This brought our number to twenty- nine. Junior Reece joined our ranks in the Sophomore year, During our junior year we had a new princi- pal, Mr. John Paul Price, who brought with him his son John Paul jr., a member of our graduating class Patty Selzer left us for eight months to live in California. During our Junior year, we presented the play, Star Crazy under the direction of Miss Knight. Also. we had the honor of having our candidate for King, Gerald Grile, elected to reign over the school. In our final year at jefferson we added to our roster more new students-Mae Jean Gilbert. Miriam Clark, and jerry Seybold. Don Phipps joined the navy during the summer of 19-16. Our senior play, Grandad Steps Out was under the direction of Miss Knight .We sponsored sev- eral projects during the year to help finance the annual. This brings to a close the history of our twelve years at jefferson, and although the going was sometimes hard, it is with reluctance that we leave the halls of H. S. COMPLIMENTS OF WOODSIDE FILLING STATION IITTHEWS CLASS HISTDBY In the fall of 1955, a group of little children entered the doors of the jefferson Township School at Matthews, Indiana. After a few months had passed we were pretty sure that two and two were four and A came before B. Wfe had eleven members in our class and Miss Irene Burns was our patient teacher. Our second year of school was still under the supervision of Miss Burns. Most of us can still remem- ber the grand times we had at recess and our first sweetheart. We had two new members in our class this year, which made thirteen. As we entered our third year of school there were fourteen boys and girls in our class. Wfe still have very happy memories of that year, of our classmates, and of our teacher, Miss Garlic. As we advanced to the fourth grade we had seventeen members. Miss Shugart was our teacher. In the spring we found that we had succeeded in being promoted into the fifth grade, in which we had thirteen members. Four mem- bers of our class had moved away to another school. Mr, Clinton Ballinger was our teacher. With twelve members we moved into the sixth grade. Mr. Ballinger was our teacher again this year. All year we looked forward with great interest to our first year upstairs. At last our ambitions were fulfilled when we became seventh graders. At first we made many mistakes, and of course it took us time to get accustomed to so many different rooms. By our eighth year we were quite accustomed to everything upstairs. In the fall of 1945 we were actually in our first year of high school: we were Freshmen! Wfe had already had eight years of training and now we were ready to enter into a new kind of work. Everything went off smoothly in our Sophomore year, without any important happenings. In our 'Iunior year we had several new experiences. Our junior play Percy Cuts Loose was our first dramatic accomplishment. The Halloween Carnival was a great success. At this time we were given the privilege of choosing class officers, and we chose Dorine Needler as President, and Lila Mayer as Vice President, and Darrell Needler as Secretary and Treasurer. The climax of this year was the junior and Senior Banquet at the Onized Club House at Gas City, Indiana. Wfe also had an Operetta at Upland and Matthews. We purchased class rings this year, and Mrs. Nola Gift was our sponsor. Anna Carey became a member of our class this year, which made us nine. Finally in the fall of 1946 we entered the doors of Jefferson High School for our last year of train- ing. Wfe were dignified seniors. Phil Tetrault became a member of our senior class, which made us nine. Again we were given the privilege of choosing class officers, we chose Dorine Needler as President, Raymond Conn as Vice President, and junior Walker as Secretary and Treasurer. Mr. Hobart Black was our sponsor. Our senior class play Let's Go Somewhere was a big success. and we had another Hallo- ween Carnival and a Christmas program this year, both turned out very well. Our class also sponsored a Box Supper of Matthews Gym. We were proud to he called the class of 47 and to have the honor of publishing the second 'Iehisco. Although we are not going back to school in the fall we will never for- get the pleasant memories and happy times we had in our school days. WISHING YOU CONTINUED SUCCESS, UPLAND HARDWARE MATTHEWS CLASS PBUPHECY For the past ten years I have been employed in the Matson Bros. Circus. We are now starting on a tour of the world and as we pass through places where the Seniors of 47 live I stop and see how they have progressed. The first place that we are going is South America, where I hear that Courtney and his wife are liv- ing. Courtney is doing research work on Foreign Dairy cattle of Argentina for Purdue University, and his wife is teaching school in Buenos Aires. We are now heading for the States. We are going up the West Coast and then over in to Montana where we see a beautiful ranch. This is where Dorine lives with her husband, Forrest and their three chil- dren. She manages the ranch while her husband teaches school four months out of each year, Wfe now move on to Wisconsin where I find junior, who now owns a 640 acre dairy farm. He is in the Merchant Marine. He says he will stay in until he can retire. He isn't married but has a girl in every port. JEHISCO STI-IFF It was a long tedious task that lay before us when we started work on the jehisco. The photographers said a little prayer that the sun would shine, the business staff hounded the merchants, the social editor prodded her staff, and the typists worked their fingers to the bone. Always in the back of our minds was the knowledge that the deadline loomed nearer and nearer. Wfe had the usual little difficulties and disappointments that a staff always meets, but finally the 1947 Jehisco rolled off the press. We know that we have made many mistakes, that we have done many things all wrong. but we hope that in the future years this book will recall all the good times, the fun, and the friends we had in jefferson High. EED CORN Coach L. R. Stockton, pilot of the high Hying Yeomen, led the team through one of jefferson Townships most successful basketball seasons, winning sixteen games to four losses and advancing to the final in the County Tourney. VIIBSITY TEAM The Yeomen, strengthened by the seasoning of several sophomores and juniors, were able to better their 1945-46 record. Losing only one player, the Yeomen had virtually the same team as in the previous season. Injuries plagued the Yeomen all through the season and at tourney time: but the Yeomen over- came the odds: won an overwhelming majority of their games. and advanced to the linals in the County Tourney. Coach L, R. Stockton served his second year as head coach and did a very commendable job. The Yeomen will graduate six seniors but will have many sophomores and four juniors to round out next years squad. FRESHMHN TERM Although the Freshman team had an unsuccessful season as far as wins and losses were concerned, they showed promise of blossoming into a very line team in a few years. Many of the players were inexperienced but the team never lacked the spirit or will-to- win that so characterizes jencerson teams. Gerald Grile, BASEBALL The Jefferson Yeomen, one of Grant County's outstanding baseball teams. ended the season of 1946 with a .71-i percentage with 5 victories and 2 setbacks. The Yeomen opened the season at home in fine style with a victory over the Zebras from Jonesboro, by a 9-0 count. Jefferson then trounced the Van Buren Aces 18-3. They tallied their third win by defeating Fairmount here, 22-2. Their journey to Swayzee proved successful as the Yeomen knocked over the Speedkings 12-4. Then came the most anticipated game of the year, the one with Gas City, played at Onized Field, which was later to decide the outcome of the County Conference. In this game Gas City got off to a 2 run lead early in the game only to be tied by the Yeomen. The host Tigers then took command again with a 5-2 lead. The Yeomen rallied for 2 runs to take the lead 4-3. Then Gas City climaxed the game in the final stanza with 2 unearned runs. The game ended 5--i. We sent the home-coming crowd home happy with a well earned 17-O victory over St. Paul. The final game of the year was played here and matched the Yeomen with Sweetser. The Braves upset the Yeomen with a S-5 win. The next year's team can look forward to a very successful season, losing only four seniors. Pitcher-third baseman Carl Vance, Second baseman john Price, and substi- tutes Gerald Grile and Bill Hargrave are the only departing players. SECUND TERM The second team was chiefly made up of veterans of last year and they, with the help of a few juniors, were able to win the majority of their games. The seconds pro vided some of the finest preliminary games in the county as shown by their record one of the finest in jeffe-rson's history. George Freck coached the Archers and did a very efficient job. We look forward to seeing many of these boys playing varsity ball in a year or so and we feel that they will display a very fine brand of basketball. JEFFS The jelfs, having many players returning from last year's squad, had one of the best teams they have had in recent year. Winning a majority of their games this season, they appear to be one of Grant Counties most promising teams. Ollie Gregory coached his initial year, as mentor of the junior High team.
