This group consisted of ten girls: Wilma Draper, Janice Howell, Jacqueline johnson, Louise johnson, Georgia jordan, Ethel Keyes, Mary Overfield, Lois Shultz, Betty Wright, Myra Williams, and fourteen boys: Johnny Arwood, Kenny Barb er, David Cunningham, Kenneth Dillman, Richard Dillman, Kenneth Fivecoate, Charles Fouts, Tommy Fraling, Don I-leckathorn, Fred Lesley, Elvin Myers, Melvin Myers, Charles Rozell and Donald Staller. Before we were accepted as students of Mexico High School we were initiated by the Sophomores. After getting acquainted with the new students who entered our class we then had a Wiener roast at Louise Johnson's home. This is only one of the good times we had during the Freshman year. During this year Mexico won both basketball and .bas eball champion- ships, in which our Sophomore boys took part. During our junior year we received our class rings and sweaters which we considered as appropriate symbols of our school. In the beginning of the year we lost Don Heckathorn and Norma Shambarger, who had joined us during our Sophormore year, and gained one new student, Flora Barnett. Looking forward to our Senior Trip we started raising money by taking charge of the concessions at the ball games. We then, with the help of Miss Clauda Fisher, presented a play called, Babies Night Out. At the close of our Junior year we gave a reception for the Senior class. We took them to Huntington, Indiana, at the La Fountaine Hotel. Our theme was The 49'ers. We decorated the tables with a covered wagon as the centerpiece, and little gold cups as our place cards. After the banquet we took them to see Blondie In The Dough. We made a good start in our Senior year by organizing one of the most interesting carnivals ever put on at J. T. H. S. Two weeks before the carnival we had each class select a candidate for queen. The girl with the highest number of votes was to be crowned as the carnival queen. Wilmalou Draper of our class was elected queen of the carnival. She received as a prize a beautiful strand ofpearls and a dozen-red roses. After the carnival, we rushed right into the preparation of our Senior play. We chose the play entitled, A Pair of Country Kids. We then had the honor, having four of our boys on the team, which won the Four-Way Tourney. After four years of hard study, we now bid farewell to good old j. T. H. 1 1 . Senior Class Will Ladies and Gentlemen, Teachers and Friends, Upon the behalf of my client, the Class of 1950, of jefferson Township High School, of the city of Mexico, County of Miami, State of Indiana, I have called you together upon this solemn and serious occasion to listen to their last will and testament, and to receive from their dying hand the few gifts they have to bestow in their last moments. Cut so rapidly loose from life and finding so much to attend to before the end should come upon them and realizing, at the same time, that they have no ' longer any time left to spend in cultivation of their own virtues, they deem it best to distribute them with their own hands to those friends to whose needs they seem best fitted. We hope that they may be accepted, not as worthless things lavishly thrown away because we couldn't use them, but as valuable assets to those who receive them and reminders of the generosity of our free and full bestowal. x FIRST: We bequeath our abilities, properties and characteristics as follows: We, the Seniors, will and bequeath our quietness in Geography Class and all our chewing gum to Mr. Miller. To Miss Fisher, we will and bequeath our ability to learn lines of plays on short notice. To Mr. Powell, we will and bequeath our ability to win ball games in Typing Class. Mr. Young, we will and bequeath our shooting from the side lines at basketball games. To Miss Mast, we will and bequeath our good behavior in English Class. To Mr. Shambarger, who has been our faithful instructor through out our High School course, we bequeath a sweet and unbroken succession of restful nights and peaceful dreams. We are sure that it has been a hard strain on him, for Seniors are said to be, at all times and under all conditions difficult to manage. But he has done his duty, and indeed, now shall he have his well earned reward. SECOND: We, the Seniors of 1950, will to the jefferson Township public school our loyal school spirit, ready response, and hearty co-operation in all things. 12 We will and bequeath to the junior class our seats in the assembly and classrooms and we hope they will endeavor to fill them as faithfully and as promptly as we have done. We will and bequeath to the Sophomore class any stubs of pencils, erasers, or scraps of paper that we may have left behind us. May they feel ,free to use them and feel, perhaps, that they may, in some mystic way, import some of our great knowledge to them. We will and bequeath to the Freshman class any over looked cuds of gum we may have left adhering to the undersides of desks, banisters, assembly seats or any likely or unlikely places. We have sometimes had to rid ourselves of these in too much haste to be able to pick and choose the most desirable means of disposal. I, Melvin Myers, will and bequeath my liking for beautiful blonds to Dave Nliller. I, Charles Rozell, will and bequeath my light brown hair to jerry Bernard Class Prophecy One December day near Christmas, I boarded the train at Pittsburg for Mexico, my old home town. As I came into the car, whom should I see but Janice Howell of J. T. I-I. S. days. just then she saw me. So she immediately told me to sit down beside her that we might have a good talk about our schoolmates of '50. Janice told me that she was editor-in-chief of the New York Bugle, Her husband, Ronald Fishback, was her business manager. janice herself, aside from her success as city editor of the paper, was making a name for herself by her short, short stories, running in the True Story Magazine. I4 Ethel Keyes, the wife of a well-known doctor, had a millinery shop on Fifth Avenue. Charles Rozell conducted a haberdashery, known for its dainty wearing apparel for larger men. Then I told janice what I knew of our classmates of '50, Flora Barnett was a teacher of Latin at I. U. Don Staller and Richard Dillman were proprietors of the 'You're Only Young Once Roof-Garden in Chicago. Mary Overfield had been starring there all winter. She was known as Razimova, the great toe dancer. Elvin and Melvin Myers were chief operators at the largest radio station in the world, located on Pikes Peak and they told me last summer that they heard Myra Williams singing, Wash Basin Blues, before the King of England. I had almost exhausted my list by that time. I could only think of two more. Georgia jordan and her husband went to the wilds of Africa as missionaries several years ago. just then a newsboy came through the car selling the '-New York Times. I bought one and Janice and I looked it over. On the front page, glaring headlines announced that Fred Lesley had defeated Gorgeous George in the world's greatest wrestling match. David Cunningham had refereed the match. On another page we read that Charles Fouts was giving a series of lectures on his research work in the tomb of King Tutti-Fruitte in Halifaz.. We went to a small tea room for our lunch after we had gotten off of the train for rest and in walked Betty Wright and Wilma Draper. They said they were teachers in the Columbus High School. Betty had been home in November, so she was able to tell us many interesting facts about our friends As we left them Wilma handed us a copy of a Peru paper, saying that she had read it and that we might have it. We thanked them and went to our train. The paper proved to be a real treasure chest, overflowing with news. Kenny Baber, the typewriting champion of the world, was to demonstrate a new kind of typewriter invented by the Royal Company. All these items made us more anxious than ever to go back. Suddenly as we discussed different classmates, janice said, But, jackie johnson, after all this, I don't know what you are doing, So I told her that I was in the Government Department of Missouri University. 15 Reminiscing In a dust covered trunk beneath some junk, In an attic cold and drear, I rummaged around till Ihad found A treasure my heart held dear. Its pages all torn, its cover worn, It made the years melt away. And there sat I in Mexico High, In a time when my heart was gay. I heaved a big sigh and started to cry, For the days of long ago, But soon had them dried, by the one by my side, This annual I'd uncovered to show. Looking at me from behind, it was rather unkind, She asked, Were you ever that small? The picture I mean, you look rather lean, I'm not sure it's you there at all. Yes, daughter dear, it is quite clear, That the years have taken their toll, But since we were the talk of the town in cap and gown Many have reached their goal. W ere there none among these, she started to tease, Who brought to their school any fame? Who of all these boys made any big noise, In playing life's busy game. And of all these girls with lovely curls, What part in the act do they play? You said they were smart, but who has a part, In life's show that is playing today? My dear, they all reached the peak, I started to speak There was none left behind. Yes, it is true in my heart's Who's Who', Every name engraved you will find. For I measure success by happiness, And you are half of mine, my sweet, But let's hurry dear and get out of here, Before the better half comes home to eat. 16 ZqQJj 5 3 wwwfxqiamsfmzam fy ROW ROW ROW ROW Juniors Class 0 1951 ONE: Me-rna Ault, Lois Dunnuck, Mary Kline. It has played for all of the home basketball games. lt gave a very inspiring Christmas program at the last basketball game before Christmas. The band played around a large, beautiful Christmas tree with a white cross in front of it. The lights were turned off and the band played Christmas Carols as the Girls' Glee Club sang along with them. The audience joined in singing Silent Night at the close of the program. The band is smaller than last year's band, but under the guidance of Cecil Powell it has progressed very rapidly. The band officers are: Jacqueline Johnson, Presidentg Dick Dillman, Vice-Presidentg and Marjorie Snyder, Secretary-Treasurer. This year the graduating members are: Donald Staller, tromboneg Janice Howell, trombone: Dick Dillman, clarinet, Jacqueline Johnson, clarinet, and David Cunningham, trumpet. Glee Club The Girls' Glee Club, directed by Miss JoAnn Mast, was organized the first of the year with eighteen members. Those entering Glee Club the second semester were Janice Howell and Jackie Johnson. Seniors who will be graduating in the spring are Georgia Jordan, Janice Howell, Jackie Johnson, and Betty Wright. V Public appearances were made at the Senior Class Play, November 15, and at the basketball game with Royal Center, December ZZ, 1949, where Christmas carols were sung. Library The library received some new books the second semester and has been a constant source of good reading material for the students. It is under the supervision of Miss JoAnn Mast. The librarians are Merna Ault, and Marjorie Snyder. Carnival The month of October brought to Mexico one of the largest and mostt colorful Carnivals it has ever seen. The main attraction was the election of the Queen with each class giving all they had to elect their candidate. Wilmalou Draper received th honor of becoming the Carnival Queen. She received a lovely triple strand of pearls and one dozen red roses. Other class candidates were: Norma Shambarger, Juniorg Claris Guillaume Sophomoreg and Helen Eikenberry, Freshmen.
