,if v. ........fForeword... In the past twelve short years, since a group of ex- cited children met in the first grade room, we have sought to gain an education. ,We each have made numerous friends and even though our hour of parting is close at hand, we will never be able to destroy the bonds which we have built through these friendships. During our school life we have learned the meaning of co-operation. Without this, our goal, as Seniors, would have been much more difficult to attain. So in this book, we, the Senior Class would like to bring out the high lights of the year 1950 and our hopes and thoughts for the future. We hope everyone will enjoy read- ing our book and that their memories of us will be happy ones. Editor 1 , F. ff J ,. Svc E'Z7OrqA Jw, 6: - XE, WW 57 'ZS' ' ' iw, PM fi WMV, 02? The year, l950 , marks the middle of our century. Histori- ans speak of the first half and second half of centuries. Graduating classes this year are in a unique position. The grads were born and received their public education in the first half of this century. They are to graduate in the exact middle of the century, and they will experience all the fruits of adult living down to old age in the last half of the century. Yes, many of our graduates will witness the turn of another century. Be- fore they enter Eternity they will write the year 2000 -- yes, even 2010 and 2020. Seems oddl, doesn't it? Let's take another look at these young people we are sending forth from our high schools. Most of them were born during the days of the great depression which was aggravated by World War I. During their early childhood they heard of bread lines and soup kitchens along with relief work. Hardly were they well established in the elementary school when the ter- rible blight of another World War shadowed their homes, separated their par- ents and frightened their friends. Then as they arrived at Junior High School level the victory came, first V-E Day and later V-I Day. But with these two historical events came another great event of the first half century -- the atom bomb. The Peace they had heard elders talk about seemed flimsy and unreal. Today as they approach May 25, 1950, their graduation date, they have be- come young citizens musing on the outcome of the H-Bomb. What will it mean? Should we wonder that our young graduates might be a little confused and even perplexed by the condition of things in their nation and world ? Sure they are confused! Who isn't.? However, all this confusion and misunderstanding serves as a challenge to our youth. Most of our great changes have come about as a result of pro- ductive thinking under pressure. It has been said aptly that necessity is the mother of invention. History records many great and noble reforms which came as the solution to perplexing problems. Had there never been a Civil War, we might not have had the great Elman- cipation Proclamation. Without the building of the Panama Canal we might not have found the cause of malaria until too late. Therefore with a shrinking world brought about by supersonic flight we will need to live together as a world family enjoying the constructive values of atomic energy. Our graduates this year along with their older friends complet- ing college will have the brunt of ushering in the new era which is due in the last hal-f of the twentieth century if we are to survive. 8 2. As I stated a year ago in the Criterion , I believe pour- boys and girls graduating from our high schools have a deep respect for their great, strong America and its prin- ciples as dictated by the founding fathers. They appreciate our system of free education and enterprise.. 'Ifhey stand ready to defegnd the American way gf life,- They are individually inwardly pledged to fight all enemies of our country. They have been taught and drilled on the precepts of our Democracy. Therefore, as this class is receiving the congratulations of parents and friends, there are many of us who love them and prayerfully bid them farewell as they leave our school to practice the fundamentals we have endeavored to instill in them. Yes, the first half of the twentieth century has been packed with adventure, frustration, change and apprehension. Now as we enter into the last half of this eventful century let us cast our lot with our young leadership. Truly the big event of this stirring century is the graduation of this year's class and their op- portunity to mend our mistakes and chart for us a happy course through the re- mainder of our lives. Best wishes and success, God Speed. Q Your friend, Herschel W. Sanders Superintendent 7 :Q ei 1 35 A 1 . 1 'W I l fi 4 . 3 -4 W 5 A , 1 9 2 .1 E Q 2? if 5? The first Tuesday in September, 1938 was an all important day in the lives of forty-five small and somewhat frightened boys and girls, who were on that day to start up the ladder of elementary and higher learning. We were greeted on that bright September morn by our smiling, first grade teacher, Miss Pleasant. From those original forty-five the following fourteen have been able to weather the storms and emerge victorious: Lowell Smith, Norman Mull, Norman Watts, Gordon Arnold, Jeanne Moore, Philip Nelson, Melvin Diggs, Joan Williams. Mary Banks, Beryl Wesler, Dorothy Frech, Dick Murray, Maurice Burden, and Duane Arnett. Patty Stemple also started and finished school with us, but at- tended another school from grade three to six. Feeling somewhat braver, grade two and pleasant Miss Barney, was our next objective. We carried on with the same pupils into grade three, taught by likeable Miss Renz. To our great surprise, when entering grade four, we were again greeted by that brave soul, Miss Barney. How she ever survived two encounters'with our wild and wooly gang will always be a mystery to us. Grade five taught by quiet Miss Harris brought us two new girls, Deborah Jurgens from Richmond and Doris Johnson from Jackson. Miss Holsinger and her kind but firm methods kept us under control during our months spent in grade six. We were re-joined by Patty Stemple and Barbara Cail who became one of us, coming to our school from Jackson. Junior High, our half way. mark up the ladder, held no terrors for us. Having conquered all fears we ever possessed, we stepped bravely forward. Studies were sometirnes pushed aside in our eagerness for fun, but onward we trudged, being joined in our seventh year by Dona Wallen, a former student at New Castle. We entered grade eight and with high school just around the corner, our thoughts and ambitions, began to change. We realized that maybe someday we would really reach our goal of being Seniors . Louise Fussner joined our battered ranks when we were Freshmen and in the Sophomore year we welcomed Lillian Bonnett from Utah. By now we were really acquiring a reputation -- liked by some and disliked by others. But never ones to worry, upward we climbed. Two more steps remained on our ladder to reach the top. The beginning of our Junior year brought us Jackie Hopkins from Richmond. She had been with us for a few weeks when we were Freshmen, but moved away. Money was our all important -problem, so we began working like mad: selling at basketball garnes, producing our very successful class play This Night Beware , giving a 50-50 Dance and finally our most important event of the year,'the Junior-Senior Re- ception, which was held at the Winchester Country Club. Now as Seniors, our goal has been reached. The top step on our ladder is occu- pied by twenty-four young men and fwomen, including Roma Franklin who joined us from Texas. What the future holds in store for us no one knows, but a backward glance shows us a picture of times spent in study, fun-making and learning to live with each other. As we review the past twelve years we remember the good times we have had as individuals and as a class. May we humbly ask our lower classmates and our teachers to remember us as we truly are -- the Class of 1950. To all concerned, we express our deepest and most heartfelt appreciation. 18 A I f 1 4 r 1 -w'a,,, , ........Picture Day., Wednesday, September 28, the long awaited Senior picture trip to Howard Knoll's Studio at Dayton, dawned cloudy and rainy. Nervously every boy and girl had been preparing for hours to look their very best. As the all important hour grew nearer, cars began leaving New Paris, filled with a total of twenty- four very excited Seniors. Appointments were scheduled to begin at nine o'clock and continued at half hour intervals, until all had been shot . Mr. Knoll proved to be very amus- ing and quickly put everyone at ease. After the usual hair combing and primp- ing, we were posed and 'shot one by one. Picture posing had been very strenuous exercise, so the next thing every- one did was eat. Cne group ate at the exclusive Howard J'ohnson's restaurant: others at various restaurants downtown. After lunch several went shopping or to the movies. Several saw the vaudeville show at Keith's Theater. One group visited our former teacher, Mr. Allen at Fairmont High School. Early in the evening, we all returned to our home town, tired and thankful that one of the most important days of our final year had been taken care of most successfully. NOTE: Our pictures were received early in December and were very sat- isfactory. We are very proud to be leaving the school a large tinted picture of our class, instead of the usual black and white. 19 Who? ' We went up to the ticket window and to our surprise there stood Dick Murray. Dick, formerly the class midget, had grown to be quite a muscle man. For he now stands six feet, two inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. We talked ' to him a few minutes and then started toward the gate. When we got there, we found, again to our surprise, the gateman was none other than Duane Arnett. He said he was very happily married and had two sets of twins. We showed him our tickets and walked on down the platform to board the train, which was on track '13. At 6:30, our train finally started on its way. We were making ourselves comfortable in our seats when we heard a familiar voice calling 'Tickets, Tick- ets, please . Looking around, we saw our old friend Beryl Wesler. We talked to him awhile and he told us that there were more members of the class of '50 in the dining car. He then took our tickets and left us. After several hours of riding, we became hungry and went to the dining car to eat. As we were waiting for our order, we saw, stepping through the door, a distinguished looking gentleman, dressed in a gray tweed suit. To our amaze- ment it was Melvin Diggs. He recognized us and came over to join us. We learned from him that he was sales manager for the Zazo-Gro-Thin Company, makers of reducing tablets. He told us the tablets were guaranteed to make you lose weight without dieting or exercising. He looked as though he could use some of those tablets himself because you see ----- he weighs over ZOO pounds. After our meal, we returned to our pullman. As we sat down we happened to look across the aisle and there sat an old gray-haired lady peering through her horn rimmed glasses. She turned and spoke to us and we saw that she was Deborah Jurgens. She said she was the principal of a large school in Philadelphia. She was returning to her home in Chicago where she was to spend her summer vacation. At ten o'clock, our train pulled into Union Station in Chicago. We were walking down the street when we saw a couple of street cleaners whose faces looked familiar. Approaching closer, we recognized them as Norman Mull and Maurice Burden. We talked with them awhile and then went on our way. We had gone about two blocks farther down the street, when we met Roma Franklin and her ten children strung out behind her. She told us she was very happily married to Reverend Herschel Snyder and that they were living in a swank apartment on the south side of Chicago. She also told us that lovely Lillian Bonnett and Louise Fussner were working as hula girls at the Merry Time Cafe under the names of Freda and Becky. Z2 K r -f Q- 9 , f f I M. Wallen get out that we could scarcely speak. We remembered how frightened she was in the drivers' training car, but of course, at that time Mr. Lauver was by her side. She said she wasn't afraid any more though. because. now Norman was always beside her. Dona then told us that she had becometvlrs. Norman Watts about five years ago. Norman had a new modern Magic Electronic plant, and that was the reason they could afford such a snazzy car. She said she must leave us because Norman didn't like for her to be out alone. After scouting around town we found a hotel called, The Lakeside , which was owned by Mary Banks. We then went inside the hotel and started to check in at the desk, when we saw a lovely cigarette girl standing in the lobby. She recognized us and came over and talked with us. It was of course, Joan Williams. Leaving Joan, we went to the desk and the clerk rang for a bell-hop. We were astonished to see Philip Nelson dashing to us. We hardly knew him as his famous curls were no longer there, he had straight blond hair. lt seems his nickname was Proxy . After showing us to our rooms, he talked with us awhile, and l noticed that he was waiting patiently for something. Oh, yes, -- naturally -- a tip! We thought to ourselves after he had gone -- Well he might have been captain of the basketball team at Jeff but he's just a bell-hop now. That eveningas we were going down town, we rode downstairs on the ele- vator, and saw that the old man who was running the elevator was Lowell Smith. We asked hitn how he liked his work and he told us fine except, it went too slow. He said it was quite different from his driving. Leaving the hotel, we noticed on a, billboard an advertisement of a circus coming to town. We looked and looked again, we couldn't believe it, but yes, it was Jacqueline Hopkins starring as The Fat Lady and Gordon Arnold as UThe Mighty Bone Crusher . lt seems Gordon was a wrestler. Walking on down the street, we heard wedding bells. Yes, they were ring- ing for Barbara Cail and Little Cliff. lt seems the whole town knew about it as it was to be the biggest society event of the year. Strolling on down the street, we came to the Bijo Theater. Patty Stemple, glamorous ballet dancer was starring for one night only. After deciding to go to see Patty's show we went up to get our tickets, and there sat Doris Johnson She took time to tell us that she was still engaged to Jack Hughes and were selling tickets and taking in washings until they were married. U7 .........Senior Projects .. At the first of the year we Seniors decided, after a look into our treasury, that funds were needed if we were going to produce a year- book and go to Washington. So we got busy. Our first project offer was made by Norman Mull. So one fine day the Seniors were found shuck- ing corn on the Mull farm. After showing our ability in the corn field, we proceeded to prove it by working for Mr. Ressler and Mr. Banks. Besides adding some much needed money to our funds, we enjoyed ourselves and those who knew lit- tle about corn before had added to their knowledge. Our second big project of the year was that of selling magazines. The class was divided into two teams, each with a Captain. Duane Arnett was Captain of one team and Melvin Diggs Captain of the other. The object was to see who could see the most. Duane's team won. We were very pleased with the results of our sale. Deborah Jurgens and Richard Murray won oscars for selling at least S 100 worth of mag- azines. Deborah also received a Parker pen and pencil set for selling the most. Next we began selling pencils and balloons. But these weren't or- dinary pencils and balloons. The pencils were in gold with the basket- ball schedule printed on them in black. The balloons were yellow with Jefferson Hornets and a basketball design on them in black. The things appealed to the students and sold quite rapidly. One of the biggest events of the year was the selection of the Senior gift. Our choice was an office furniture set consisting of a desk, a desk chair, and a guest chair in gray metal. ln the eighth grade we gave a bulletin board to be placed in the upper hall and when we were Sopho- mores we bought a public address box for our home room. One of the last big features was the production of the Senior play. The name of it was Huckleberry Finn . We chose that particularly because of the popularity of the book of that name. This just about concludes our projects with the exception of our yearbook and our Washington Trip and I am sure- both will be a huge suc cess because of the amount of work put into them. They have been the inspiration for the work. P 26 f - '- in 22,91 rf 4 1, , ,.::..S-53.
