OUR RIFLE TEAM who said a girl can't shoot a gun? Just ask the high school rifle team what they think of Jefferson's rifle team under the supervision of Mr. Neal. After we soundly defeated them a few weeks ago, there's been a definite change in their opinion toward our out- standing team. Much praise should be given to Mr. Neal because of the remark- able work he has done with his Hshootersn The ninth grade rifle team consists of 30 members, 20 girls and 10 boys. They hold practice at the high school on Mondays between six and ten o'c1ock. Much work must be put into this activity by Mr. Neal. However, I'm sure he en- joys it. Why, just the other day I over- heard him confess that he thinks he has prettier members on this rifle team than any other. Isnlt that so, Nikki Paulus and Patti Bayers? Other members of the team include: Kristi Uddstrom Michele Marra Chris Emery Louise Poole Joanne Miller Nikki Paulus Penny Shumaker Sandy Geist Gail Maston Francine Rickel Jane Brennon Pat Thomas Bobbie Yochum Vicki Brick Patti Bayers Ann Bastian Linda Read Dick Studley Bob Barnes Ja Richmond Henry Green Bill Nuernberg Mike Young Bill Gilliland Fred Franke Bill Hartsough YOUR LIFE' S WORK In the theater, talent isn't the only thing needed for success. A variety of things are needed - determination, courage and something to start with. The same holds true for an and every other life's career. Besides talent there are prerequisites which con- tribute towards success in your chosen f 0 It's never too late to start, and now is the perfect time. The right way to reap a good harvest is to sow the right seeds in the right place at the right time. You put your best effort into that harvest and when it comes up, it is not a matter of right timing or luck. It's the sowing that counts. Actors and actresses don't become stars overnight, and if they do, it's rare! Writers don't sit down one day and wriet a best-seller the next day. Time, talent, determination, prepara- tion and conviction must be written in to it. If you sow different seeds, not unnaturally, a different harvest will be harvested. Sow the right seedsg sow them well, and a dreamed of life success will A develop into a real one. by Julie Ketterer CThe unique bulletin board was de- Joan Pollock 29. YOUR SUBJECTS, NEXT YEAR Through the eyes of a term-paper- hardened, test-weary, lecture-shocked 8th grader, here is the low-down for next year's eighth graders in the form of a resume' of the subjects in your curriculum. Social Studies The history and geography of the America's, primarily the United States, from the underkying reasons for its discovery, exploration, and coloniza- tion, through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the turn of the century to World War II and our troubled times are covered. Almost every phase of our varied past is studied, making this one of the most interesting courses of the year. Health Eighth grade health, taken in either the first or second semester, consists of the study of the human anatom as well as the study of mental health. Science Alternating with health, science in- cludes in its l8 weeks the biological and physical sciences, astronom , biology, geology, physics, and others. A written report, oral report, and project will be required in most classes. Language Arts This class is thought by many to be one of our most important classes. Reading entails reading and discussion from the regular text, along with the study of unit reading, probably on the subject of COURAGE. Spelling will be taught on the next grade level. Depending upon your teacher, English, from writing to formal grammar study, is covered thor- oughly. Journals, compositions, and . diagram ing, among other skills, will be stressed. French French in the eighth grade is avail- able only to those who are taking it now. Next year's work with verbs, grammar, and idioms will depend upon how far you have progressed this year. Shop The practical arts courses will in- clude projects using machines other than those alread demonstrated. The band saw, lathe, and hand power tools will be used in wood shop, and the foundry, engine lathe, and shaper in metal shop. Mechanical drawing classes will progress to isometric lines and circles. Mathematics Depending on your class - basic, middle, or advanced - the study of math includes everything from arith- metic to the beginnings of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, number bases and systems. Art and Music Music will progress from this year with more information on notation, the composers, and instruments. Art study will vary. As an example of what to expect, this year's group completed projects in water colors, crayons, pencil, and soap. by Warren Ayres .2-' ggxzr thwrfx ip lg 59, 'ff 51:4 It Zi E5 ff' img?
