TRACK TEAM Not much publicity is given to this area of sports, coached by Mr. Ash- burner and Mr. Ward. The team has taken part in two meets, winning one and losing one. More meets are planned in the future. The track team meets every day after school and practices from about 3:hS to 5:10. There are few definite quali- fications for being on the team. How- ever, anyone on the team has to have at least passing grades and attend practices regularly. The team itself is divided into two smaller groups known as the HAH team and the HBH team. In the track meets, the HAH team and HBH team each play the HAH and HBH team of the opposing school. Besides being divided into two teams, each person is classified according to weight. Light, middle, and heavy weight divisions are examples of these. The entire 7th, 8th, and 9th grade track team consists of 85 members with approximately 21 ninth graders. by Rosemary Housekeeper A TRIBUTE Perhaps the most neglected people in our school Ccontrary to the student's popular opinionl are the teachers. Of course they are noticed when they give a low grade or a large homework assignment - but not in the right way. I feel it is about time to commend some of the outstanding members of the faculty. Mr. Lang Mr. Lang, famous for his Latin sayings, is a teacher with many commendable characteristics. He is very easy ta get along with. As students in his ' classes will know, much work is accom- plished, but it is done in an enjoyable manner with an occasional bit of humorgf One thing that must be noted is the fact that Mr. Lang will never ignore a raised hand or a question. His great knowledge of many languages and historical events characterizes Mr. Lang as an accomplished scholar. He is a valuable addition to the Jefferson staff. Mrs. Hartmann Mrs. Hartmann, our biology and science teacher, is to be admired for her down-to-earth, unaffected personality. She is immediately likeable. Her ability to talk with teen-agers is amazing. Believe it or not, this is due mainly to the fact that she likes us! CShe even admits itll She never becomes impatient, even after explain- ing complicated body systems over and over again. Mr. Meyers Mr. Meyers is one of the most out- standing teachers in our school. He is definitely not the Htough guyH type who enforces discipline with an iron hand. His pleasant, mild manner and pleasing personality are the only elements he needs to enforce discipline Mr. Meyers respects interests in a student and does not judge a person completely by his scholastic ability. He remains optimistic, even in the dimmest situations. This is a very commendable characteristic and some- thing which many of us find hard to do. One of the superior things about Mr. Meyer's teaching method is that he allows one to draw his own con- clusions. Mr. Meyers is ready to answer any question or help at an time. At times, I find Mr. Meyers very witty and humorous. If Jefferson is wise, it will hold on to this fine mathematics teacher. H by Cheryl Will
