FRIENDLY LETTER UNIT REAPS LETTERS Writing letters may be a chore, but receiving letters is lots of fun, espe- cially if they are from Nelson Rocks feller, Dwight D, Eisenhower, Joe L. Brown, Bobby Darin, to name only a few well known personalities who were not too busy to answer promptly the letters of boys and girls. To climax a friendly letter-writing unit, eighth grade students in Mrs. Gesin's language arts class were en- couraged to write a friendly letter to someone they admired. The letters were written in class, copied neatly in ink on appropriate stationery, and mailed to the respective people. The reward for their efforts was not too long in coming for these pupils. Linn Phillips chose to congratulate John F. Kenned on his Presidential victory. Ralph A. Dugan, Special Assistant to the President, replied, HThe President has received your letter and appreciates your friend- liness in writing. Your kind words pleased him very much, and he wants me to assure you that he realizes his great responsibilities and is determined to do his best in every way possible to keep America safe and strong.n Mr. Dugan assured Mike Kerr that the President Ualways enjoys hearing from young stu- dents! Carolyn Kennedy answered Flozanne John's letter through Letitia Baldridge, social secretary. Miss Baldridge wrote that Carolyn Uenjoyed hearing everything you had to say, and it made her happy to meet you by mail.n A letter of recognition for work well M done was also in order for Dwight D. Eisenhower. In reply to such messages from numerous students, Mr. Eisenhower said, NThank you very much for your kind and thoughtful message. To have the respect and good will of one's fellow citizens is the greatest honor that can come to an American. Mrs. Eisenhower joins me in deep gratitude to you.N Beth Brindle received the best wishes of the Nixons and a photograph of the family I Regretting that the pressure of official business prevented him from undertaking any detailed personal correspondence, Nelson Rockefeller, Governor of New'York, sent a brief note and a detailed booklet of New York to Elaine Edwards. Across the ocean flew Steve Additon's message to Winston Churchill. His reward was Churchill's personal card thanking him very much for his kind letter. Hlt is always good to hear from some- one who grew up in m home town,W wrote Jimmy Stewart to Roberta Gessler HYes, I do remember your father.n Joe L. Brown thanked Bob Garland for his interest in the Pirates and assured him that in strengthening his club, H.... we will not trade merely to change names. If we cannot make a trade that will be advantageous to our club, our opening day line-up will be selected from those players who are currently on our roster.n Veteran Pirates Vernon Law and Dick Groat also sent their best wishes. Author of many nursing books, Dorothy Deming, R.N., sent Barbara Barrett a personal note and requested the New York Nursing Headquarters to send her information on nursing. Autographed pictures of Jerry Lewis and Bobby Darin gladdened the hearts of two other students, ,X Le X :ig , t Q re N, tp' P-JP as Mk l'9- x.- N
