The History of Jefferson Hospital The Jefferson Hospital was established in the year 1908 by Dr. Hugh H. Trout, Sr., a graduate of the University of Virginia. He also did post graduate work at Harvard, several hospitals in Maryland, and studied for a year in Germany. The hospital structure, which at first accommodated fifteen patients was originally erected as a residential building. Through the years six additions have been made, increasing its capacity to the present one hundred and fifty beds. The procedure of operation by which this hospital functions is somewhat like that of Union Memorial Hospital of the Nlayo Clinic in Maryland. The operating room with its windowed dome and circular fioor plan was modeled after that of the famous Allgemeine Kronlten Hous in Germany. Because of Dr. Trout's profound admiration for Thomas Jederson, he named this hospital for him. In the year 1914, under the capable supervision of Nliss Frances I. Lusby, assisted by Miss Ethel Bowen, a training school for nurses was established here. From the small group of girls who then occupied the first nurses home to the current enrollment of 52, this school has grown with the hospital. The uniform adopted at that time has changed only in hem line as fashion has dictated. In the early months of IQI8 Dr. Trout closed the hospital while he and I1U1I1Cl'OUS members of the staff went to war. After the war he returned to Roa- noke and reopened the hospital. Since that time its doors have never been closed to those who need its aid. Years passed and the hospital grew and Hourished. The year 1941 saw the beginning of another great war. In 1943 the National government organized the Cadet Nurse Corps and for the next five years, ending in 1948, the majority of the Jefferson students were trained under this bill. On January 13, 1950, Dr. Trout, Sr., died, leaving his share of the hospital to his sons. They and his friend and colleague, Dr. A. P. Jones persist in the ideas which he advocated from the beginning of the hospital's establishment. Although Dr. Trout is dead, this hospital stands as a memorial to his life of service and devotion to his fellow man. The hospital is approved by the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons for both intern and resident training. It is also a member of the American Hospital Association.
