Memories FUN AT THE Y. W. C. A. Not so many months ago, in the good old summertime, we girls skipped merrily to the Y. W. C. A. for an hour or so of fun and relaxation. But of course this event happened only once a week on Friday afternoons, which was refreshing after a hot morning in the classroom. In shorts, we began with a short period of physical exercise and then a lively game of ball or a dip in the pool. After a shower, and getting dressed again, we turned our weary feet homeward. LILLIE FRANK FIELD TRIPS GARST BROTHERS DAIRY , We saw how milk is homogenized, butter is made and the process of the milk throughout the plant and the explanation of the pasteurization of the milk. We inspected the barns, cooling plant and saw the cows. These cows are tested for tuberculosis. ROANOKE,S VVATER SUPPLY We went over to the water plant which is located at the foot of Mill IVIountain. We inspected the pump Which pumps the water from the spring at the foot of Mill Mountain. We went into the laboratory and had explained to us how the water is tested to make sure it is pure and safe for drinking purposes. CLOVER CREAMERY We went in through the business ohices and into the ice cream department. We had explained to us the steps in making ice cream. We saw how evaporated milk is made. We saw again the process of pasteurization and butter making. We also visited the Williamson Road Sewage Disposal Plant and the Garbage Incinerator. In our field trips we went through the Old Dominion Candy plant, the different steps of the manufacture of the candy was explained. We visited several restaurants also. LOIs CARTER SOCIAL AFFAIRS Annual Christmas Danceesemi-formal dance each Christmas, sponsored by the hospital, for the student nurses. Pajama Party-sponsored by the seniors in December to decorate the living rooms and the Christmas tree. Each nurse received a stocking filled with candy and an orange. Halloween Partyesponsored by the seniors. Prizes were awarded for the best costume, of which Miss Seville rated first prize with Miss Porter rating second. Tea for Roanoke Hospital Nurses-sponsored by the seniors from 4 to 6 in the evening. Open House for the prospective new students and their mothers. The girls were shown over the entire nurses, home and hospital. DORIS CARTER CHAPEL EXERCISES At 6:30 each morning, except on Saturdays and Sundays, all the unfortunate students who have to go on duty at seven oiclock go trooping into the classroom. With half-shut eyes they are still buttoning cuffs and aprons, and envying the lucky girls who are still sleeping. A student leads with a scripture reading, a hymn and the Lordjs Prayer, after which the roll is called by the supervisor who is attending tthey take turnsl. After every one not present is ac- counted for they all go trooping up to the dining room for breakfast. Although Mrs. Welsh may be a little more strict concerning our personal appearance, we like to have her attend chapel with us because she doesnit detain us by calling the rollebut you can bet she would know it if you were supposed to be there and didIft make it. How does she do it? MARJORIE BRYAN ROOF GARDEN Jefferson Hospitalis past roof garden has been converted into a sleeping porch for the nurses. This arrangement has proved to be more healthful than sleeping in the rooms. There are four rows of two decker beds from the back to the front windows. New students occupy the back row and each year they move up a row. Students are required to be in bed by IO oiclock in the evening and up each morning by 6 oiclock. Every morning at 5:45 the nurse that works on fifth hall night duty rings a bell to wake everyone. The beds are to be made neatly each morning upon arising, for inspection later on in the day. Meaning. of 3 Nurses Cap The lineage of the cap goes back to medieval and even to those earlier times when womanls humility and obedience were signified by her assumption of a bridal veil. The nurses cap was the symbol of her service to humanity. It tried with varying success to fulfill also another purpose de- manded of it by an age awakening to consciousness of germs. The cap was worn to cover the hair and keep the appearance modest and neat. When the styles of hair dressing changed the size of the cap became smaller and was moved further back on the head. RUBY BOLT Why Nurses Wear Uniforms The present-day nurse,s uniform is a direct descendant of. the religious orders of medieval times- for during that time all nursing was done by nuns or deaconesses. The stiff white cap of the deacon- ess, the close-fitting white linen cap of the nun, the fluted ruffles or bows under the chin-eall these were forerunners of the present uniform and cap. l The cap, especially, has received much attention. It is said to be a modification of the bridal veil of the middle ages. Its symbolism has been that of forsaking all others, humility, obedience, and service. As the custom grew these veils became part of the prescribed habit within the walls of the church. Thus it has descended to the nurses cap, Which is yet associated With humility and the rendering of service to mankind. The modern nursels uniform also inherited the motives of these religious habitSehumility, pro- tection, cleanliness and uniformity. DREAMA SCOTT 1421
