United States Cadet Corps The United States Cadet Corps was created by an Act of Congress passed unanimously in June, 1943, Hto provide for the training of nurses for the armed forces, government and civilian hospitals, health agencies and war industries. To furnish to students without charge for tuition fees and other expenses, courses of study and training, uniforms, insignia and maintenance in accordance with the regulations of the Surgeon General. This act was introduced by NIrs. Frances P. Bolton, a Congresswoman and is known as the Boltdn Act. The Cadet Corps was established under the United States Public Health Service. Dr. Thomas Parran was and is Surgeon General of the United States. Miss Lucille Petry was head of the Cadet Corps. . MARGARET SMITH Cadet Corps Pledge I am solemnly aware of the obligations I assume toward my country and toward my chosen profession; I Will follow faithfully the teachings of my instructors and the guidance of the physicians with whom I work; I will hold in trust the fmest traditions of nursing and the spirit of the Corps; I will keep my body strong, my mind alert, and my heart steadfast; I will be kind, tolerant, and understanding; AboVe all, I will dedicate myself now and forever to the triumph of life over death. As a Cadet Nurse, I pledge to my country my service in essential nursing for the duration of the war.
