' I ' S. as gsm 'Q J LXQ World-wide happenings and events may seem relatively unimport- ant in the everyday lives of busy high school students, but they do have definite long range consequences. The school year 76-77 had its share of significant news events to remember. With the election of Jimmy Carter as the 39th President, there was much controversy over which candidate could best lead our country on to greater prosperity. There were even some seniors who were able to actively support their candidate by voting in their first presidential election. Is capital punishment morally right? was the question that was discussed in Mr. Jack Fisk's government classes, as Gary Gilmore shocked the country by demanding his own death sentence. Farrah Fawcett-Majors and her famous swim suit poster prompted envious remarks from the girls but strong approval from In the news 4' If p ' Q , is . The bitter cold winter, and a plea from Washington, brought temperatures to even lower extremes as school thermostats were lowered to a frigid 65 degrees. Senior Diane Davis commented, The really cold weather bothered me most when my car wouIdn't start in the morningl Our country had experienced the coldest winter in several decades. On the movie scene, Rocky won the Academy Award for Pic- ture of the Year, while Evergreen was named Song of the Year. Receiving seven perfect scores for her Olympic performances, Nadia Comanecia, the fourteen year old gymnast from Romania, was the undisputed queen of the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal. These are a few of the more memorable events that made the 76-77 school year distinguishable from any other year. -Jody Doyle

UWM' Aff If In an to raise money for their particular organization, students sold everything from candy and fruit, to socks, calendars, and Lemon Rex cleaner. Senior Senate, Distributive Education, and Concert Choir were just a few of the many groups that contributed to the stream of smiling salesmen wandering the halls in search of prospective customers and the almighty buck. Mike llten, a member of D.E., commented, It seemed that we were always selling things all year long. It wasn't so bad, though, since it gave us something to do during the year. The issue of student sales came under close scrutiny this year. In a report filed by the NCA evaluation team, it was stated that there was too much of an emphasis placed upon fund raising at Jefferson. We echo that concern, replied Mr. William C. Jacobson, principal. Denise Beach has a hard time deciding what to buy from Seniors Joe Sher- man, Barb Kepler, and Keely Mooney. , A X i 5 ,, Junior Lori Fowler helps the drama department meet expenses by selling tickets for the winter play. bay K Kali. An exhausted and forlorn Mark Ockenfels sold everything from fruit to socks to help raise money.
