Homecoming began earlier this year, or at least this was the belief ex- pressed by many Jefferson students. Editorials and numerous cartoons appeared in the school newspaper criticizing the girls for starting their smile campaign so early. The girls were thought to be out getting votes when they were actually only being themselves, or at least most of them. Twenty-five senior girls were selected by popular vote of the senior class. The students then went on to choose the nine finalists, and finally the coveted position of Jefferson's 1976 Homecom- ing queen was decided. One change that took place this year was the dropping of the speeches usually made by the nine finalists. This sparked a small controversy because this meant that many juniors and sophomores voted for a queen on mere sight alone.
