claim her with pride, just as she in her many contacts throughout the world has said with pride, I am an English teacher at Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon. In the bond whi ch that statement asserts we have been elevated as a school. As early as 1941 Martha Shull, having demonstrated her value as a member of many significant local, state, and national committees, was elected president of The Inland Em- pire Education Association. In the summer of 1954, after serving as president of the Oregon Education Association, but before being elected president of the National Education Association, Martha Shull was one of two delegates appointed by the United States Department of State to attend the 17th International Con- ference on Education in Geneva, Switzerland; from there she went as NEA delegate to an International Conference in Oslo, Norway. She was also a delegate to conferences in Canada, Norway, Germany, and the Philippine Islands. In 1955 Presi- dent Eisenhauer selected her to serve on his committee for the White House Conference on Education. She was selected as a member of the joint committee of NEA and the Magazine Publishers Association and also served on the panel of Education Consultants of the Curtis Publishing Company. Lewis and Clark College granted her an honorary LHD degree at the Commencement Exercises where she de- livered the Commencement Address. She was chosen by the Quota Club as a Woman of Acheive- rnent and as a Leading Woman in Oregon Public Affairs by Theta Sigma Phi. Martha Shull has been a classroom teacher for 39 years. During this time, she has brought honor to Jefferson, to the community, and to Portland. She is one of the best known and frequently honored classroom teachers in America. She has dedicated to the improvement of education and the well-being of society her understanding and appreciation of people, her keen insight, her ability to seea problem in its whole, her talent for leadership, and her capacity for concentrated continous effort. The radiance of her spirit, her charm, her poise, the natural way in which she reflects that which is beautiful and true have inspired both students and teachers. She is an ambass- dor of good will wherever she goes. We, the students of Jefferson High School, are proud to dedicate the 1967 Spectrum to Miss Martha Shull. In Dedication 4
